Yogathon 2012 - Surya Namaskar at Bay of Bengal

7th April 12 was a different dawn at Marina – the Bay of Bengal has seen many – from the brisk beach walkers to those practicing Yoga to many political meetings.  In fact, the people from interior parts of Tamilnadu who visit the Capital of the State for the first time, be it a family trip or part of any political group or sectarian meet land up at the  beaches of Marina.

In the recent years, it has become a fashion to attribute some significance to a day and call is… ‘World …. Day’ -  7th of April is being celebrated as “World Health Day”

From time immemorial, worshipping Sun has been practised and the 12 steps to saluting Sun God representing various Yogic postures is known as ‘Surya Namaskar’ – the Salutation to Sun.  This Surya Namaskar when properly done, helps the body and mind in many ways – it energises, relaxes, rejuvenates and calms the mind – prevents  diseases and by oxygenating cells of body, improves one’s health.  This is generally done in the morning at the time of Sun rise and usually in front of Sun, worshipping the rising God.  This Yogic procedure links together twelve asanas in a dynamically performed series. A full round of Surya namaskara actively puts every organ to stretched exercises providing synergy.

The Art of Living founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, organized ‘the Yogathon Challenge’ – an initiative to create awareness about Yoga and create interest in its practice for a healthier living.

Today morning, the service land of beach road was full of people of all ages, of different Organisation coming together to perform, practice and propogate the spirit and benefits of Yoga.  It was really a wonderful sight to see young children participate with vigour and vying with others to complete the 108 rounds of Surya Namaskar and to collect Certificate from the Organisers.

The event was flagged off by Dr VS Vijay, Minister of Health, Tamilnadu Govt.  Saidai Duraisamy, Mayor of Chennai was also present.   Art of Living had made elaborate arrangements and the event was well organized
