Auto Mantra ~ !! - importance Education ......... and kidney

Education is the most important thing and perhaps the powerful tool to transform a society.  In Triplicane, SYMA has been running a free Tuition centre (throughout Academic year) since 2008 – to more than 100 students (X Std & +2) – SYMA Growth.  Importance of education has been glorified in Thirukkural, Naladiyar and in many Tamil literature verses.

Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, roughly fist-sized, located below the rib cage on either side of the spine, crucial for filtering blood, removing waste/extra water as urine, balancing electrolytes, controlling blood pressure, and producing red blood cells via hormones. They are vital parts of the urinary system, with each kidney containing millions of tiny filters (nephrons) that purify the blood, removing toxins and balancing fluids, with problems like diabetes or high blood pressure posing major risks.

கல்வி கரையில கற்பவர் நாள்சில;

Drinking alcohol can affect many parts of your body, including your kidneys.  Alcohol damages the kidneys by causing dehydration, increasing blood pressure, and interfering with their ability to filter blood. Chronic heavy drinking increases the risk of kidney disease and acute kidney injury.

Chennai Autos impress in their own way - here is another Auto Mantra -  it reads :

Education will alleviate poverty !

Drinking (habit/addiction)  will damage your kidney

Interesting !

Same Eyes

Same Eyes

A rich family of brothers and a sister (Kanchana), takes care of a native doctor (vaithian )-cum-musician. On the day one of the brothers is to leave on a holiday with his wife (G. Sakunthala), the wife finds him hanging from the ceiling. He has been murdered, says top cop (‘Major’ Sundararajan). Later, there is a murder attempt on the widow too, but she escapes. However, the incident leaves her mentally disturbed.

Athey Kangal (literally - The Same Eyes)   mystery thriller film written and directed by A. C. Tirulokchandar was released in 1967. The film starred Ravichandran and Kanchana.  It focused  on a girl's family being stalked by a masked murderer, and her lover's attempts to apprehend him. The movie was produced by A. V. Meiyappan under Balasubramanian & Co, a subsidiary of his company AVM Productions. It was simultaneously filmed in Telugu as Ave Kallu, with Kanchana reprising her role.

AVM Productions built a huge house set for Mehrban (1967); however AV Meiyappan felt the richness of the set was never felt in the film so he decided not to dismantle the set. Director AC Tirulokchandar who visited the set felt this house would fit in for a film in the thriller genre and decided to make a film on in this set,  which became Athey Kangal.  A Post graduate [MA] – Thirulokachander was among the most successful film makers.  He  started working   in Newtone Studios under the name A.C.T. Chandar. Then he worked in Citadel Studios  and wrote the screenplay for the hit film, Vijayapuri Veeran, an adaptation of The Three Musketeers .

the tongue !!

Are you a good orator !  in life, at times, it is not about what you speak, it is about how you control your tongue and the words that you speak !!

The tongue is a mass of muscle that is almost completely covered by a mucous membrane. It occupies most of the oral cavity and oropharynx. It is known for its role in taste, but it also assists with mastication (chewing), deglutition (swallowing), articulation (speech), and oral cleansing.   The tongue's upper surface (dorsum) is covered by taste buds housed in numerous lingual papillae. It is sensitive and kept moist by saliva and is richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels. The tongue also serves as a natural means of cleaning the teeth.   A major function of the tongue is to enable speech in humans and vocalization in other animals.

The human tongue is divided into two parts, an oral part at the front and a pharyngeal part at the back. The left and right sides are also separated along most of its length by a vertical section of fibrous tissue (the lingual septum) that results in a groove, the median sulcus, on the tongue's surface.

Stand in front of a mirror, open your mouth slightly and try to bring the sides of your tongue up towards each other to make a U-shape. If you can do it you are a tongue-roller, along with between 65 and 81% of people, more of them women than men.  If you tried this before, the chances are it was in a biology lesson on genetics at school. Some may recall,  sitting on high stool at the lab bench trying in vain to roll  tongue, while other  friends seemed to be able to do it effortlessly. The reason we couldn’t all do it, we were told, is because it is a simple genetic trait.  Now Scientists say it is a myth.

One of the super intelligent human being Albert Einstein is remembered for his wisdom,  his theory of special relativity, the one that generated the famous equation E=mc2?; his Nobel Prize for his discovery of the photoelectric effect – and to some  that wacky tongue photo you see everywhere. For a serious scientist who made such formidable discoveries about the universe, that's a pretty silly face to make, but   his expressive face and distinctive hairstyles have been widely copied and exaggerated.

The famous image of Einstein sticking out his tongue came on his 72nd birthday on March 14, 1951. United Press photographer Arthur Sasse was trying to persuade him to smile for the camera, but having smiled for photographers many times that day, a tired and bored  Einstein stuck out his tongue instead and that became a great photo to be seen everywhere.

Interesting !  Tongue !!

PSLV C60/Spadex soars into sky !

By 9.45 pm, we were standing in the terrace at Triplicane, with eyes fixed to the sky !  - yes another successful ISRO launch.  Precisely at   10:00:15 PM, PSLV-C60 with SpaDeX and innovative payloads lifted off from Sriharikota and in a couple of minutes they were visible at Chennai.

PSLV C60/SPADEX Mission  - is a cost-effective technology demonstrator mission for the demonstration of in-space docking using two small spacecraft launched by PSLV. This technology is essential for India’s space ambitions such as Indian on Moon, sample return from the Moon, the building and operation of Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), etc. In-space docking technology is essential when multiple rocket launches are required to achieve common mission objectives. Through this mission, India is marching towards becoming the fourth country in the world to have space docking technology.

Here are couple of photos clicked in the dark sky too !!

Well done ISRO – Jai Hind

Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, Marquess of Dalí of Púbol (1904 – 1989)  known as Salvador Dalí   was a Spanish surrealist artist renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship, and the striking and bizarre images in his work.

In Tamil cinema, the easiest distinction between the dual roles  is the mush – one with moustache and another without !  - remember Rajnikant ‘Thillu mullu’ !!

சிங்கம்னா சீறும்டா சிறுத்தைன்னா பாயும்டா;

In Tamil folklore and tinseldom, that hair above lips portrays valour ! ~  murukku meesai (twirled moustache) is seen as symbol of virility !!  ~  mankind has sported for centuries – a derived trait that is not aped by any other living being ! – not by apes, monkeys, gorillas .. .. whereas beard is sported by many animals, especially lions. Though North Indian film stars do not sport it much, erstwhile heroes like Rajni and Kamal had big facial hair.

It is stated that keeping thick moustache  caused some problem during British Raj in 19th Century and, as a result, Indian moustache had a profound effect on British facial hair. The British Army, who were clean shaven until that time, had difficulty maintaining authority among the Indian soldiers, who saw their officers' lack of a moustache, beard and sideburns as a lack of manliness. Eventually British officers began to cultivate moustache and other facial hair to gain the respect of their troops. The trend of sporting a moustache spread quickly through the army and then back home amongst the general British civilian population.

Salvador Dali was a Spanish surrealist artist who was known for his eccentric personality and his bizarre art. His moustache was one of his most famous features, and it became a symbol of his unique vision.

Dali began growing his moustache in the early 1940s, and he quickly became known for it. He often used his moustache as a prop in his performances and in his art. For example, he once appeared in a public lecture with his moustache on fire. He also used his moustache as a way to express his artistic ideas. Dali's moustache was insured for $1 million !, and he was very protective of it. He once said that he would never shave it off, even if he was offered a million dollars.

Dali's moustache was more than just a fashion statement, it was a symbol of his unique vision and his artistic genius. The two upward-curling points of his moustache were said to represent the horns of a rhinoceros, which is a symbol of the subconscious. Dali believed that the subconscious was a powerful source of creativity, and he often used his art to explore the hidden depths of the human mind.

Interesting ! (but my parents scold me whenever I twirl my mush upwards!)

Do you wear spectacles ! -

Do you wear Spectacles? -  you would understand certain inconveniences – for example, when you stand in a crowded bus !, when you play or run, when it drizzles and you are either walking or driving a two-wheeler !!

The first part of the book   considers the obstacles to real wisdom and truth, classifying the causes of error (offendicula) into four categories: following a weak or unreliable authority, custom, the ignorance of others, and concealing one's own ignorance by pretended knowledge.

The Opus Majus ("Greater Work") is the most important work of Roger Bacon. It was written in Medieval Latin in 1267.  The 878-page treatise ranges over all aspects of natural science, from grammar and logic to mathematics, physics, and philosophy. He also wrote  Opus Minus, which was intended as an abstract or summary of the longer work, followed shortly by a third work, Opus Tertium, as a preliminary introduction to the other two.

Ophthalmology  is a surgical subspecialty within medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. An ophthalmologist is a physician who specializes  in medical and surgical eye care.  Eye-glasses, spectacles -   are vision eyewear, with lenses (clear or tinted) mounted in a frame that holds them in front of a person's eyes, typically utilizing a bridge over the nose and hinged arms (known as temples or temple pieces) that rest over the ears. Glasses are typically used for vision correction, such as with reading glasses and glasses used for nearsightedness; however, without the specialized lenses, they are sometimes used for cosmetic purposes. Safety glasses provide eye protection against flying debris for construction workers or lab technicians; these glasses may have protection for the sides of the eyes as well as in the lenses.

Although many sources state that eyeglasses were invented in 1317, the idea for glasses may have started as early as 1000 B.C. Some sources also claim that Benjamin Franklin invented glasses, and while he did invent bifocals, this famous inventor cannot be credited with creating glasses in general. In a world where 60% of the population needs some form of corrective lenses to see clearly, it’s hard to picture a time when eyeglasses weren’t around.

By some accounts the use of lenses for optical purposes was made in 1268 by Roger Bacon.   Roger Bacon   also known by the scholastic accolade Doctor Mirabilis, was a medieval English philosopher and Franciscan friar who placed considerable emphasis on the study of nature through empiricism. In the early modern era, he was regarded as a wizard and particularly famed for the story of his mechanical or necromantic brazen head. Bacon applied the empirical method   to observations in texts attributed to Aristotle.  His linguistic work has been heralded for its early exposition of a universal grammar.  Bacon's major work, the Opus Majus, was sent to Pope Clement IV in Rome in 1267.

By some other accounts, the first eyeglasses were estimated to have been made in central Italy, most likely in Pisa, by about 1290: In a sermon delivered on 23 February 1306, the Dominican friar Giordano da Pisa wrote "It is not yet twenty years since there was found the art of making eyeglasses, which make for good vision ... And it is so short a time that this new art, never before extant, was discovered. Salvino D'Armato degli Armati of Florence is sometimes credited with the invention of eyeglasses in the 13th century.

Who really thinks of the inventor ! – if you are able to read this well – thank God for the power of the eyes and your literacy and see this photo, the same one at the start with colour enhancements.

Hospital fined for wrong Eye treatment !!

Eyes  are organs of the visual system. They provide beauty to the face and make us see beautiful things.  They provide living organisms with vision, the ability to receive and process visual detail, as well as enabling several photo response functions that are independent of vision. Eyes detect light and convert it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons.

Eye is a wonder object, slightly asymmetrical globe, about an inch in diameter. The front part  includes:  Iris, Cornea, Pupil, Sclera, Conjunctiva, .. .. and all these work together to give us the vision that we see !!   First, light passes through the cornea (the clear front layer of the eye). The cornea is shaped like a dome and bends light to help the eye focus. Some of this light enters the eye through an opening called the pupil (PYOO-pul). The iris (the colored part of the eye) controls how much light the pupil lets in. Next, light passes through the lens (a clear inner part of the eye). The lens works together with the cornea to focus light correctly on the retina. When light hits the retina (a light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye), special cells called photoreceptors turn the light into electrical signals. These electrical signals travel from the retina through the optic nerve to the brain. Then the brain turns the signals into the images you see. .. . and eyes need tears to work correctly !!

Seen here is Cat’s eye .. ..   a Cat's eye or road stud is a retroreflective safety device used in road marking and was the first of a range of raised pavement markers.  A key feature of the cat's eye is the flexible rubber dome which is occasionally deformed by the passage of traffic. A fixed rubber wiper cleans the surface of the reflectors as they sink below the surface of the road (the base tends to hold water after a shower of rain, making this process even more efficient). The rubber dome is protected from impact damage by metal 'kerbs' – which also give tactile and audible feedback for wandering drivers.

Amblyopia (or lazy eye) is the most common cause of vision loss among children. If it is not treated timely and properly, it can stay through adulthood. Amblyopia generally develops from birth up to age 7 years. It is the leading cause of decreased vision among children. Rarely, lazy eye affects both eyes.

Holding an eye hospital, its operating Ophthalmologist and anaesthetist guilty of medical negligence while conducting squint eye correction surgery, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has recently directed them to pay Rs 1 crore compensation to the parents of a patient, who died on the operation table.

The top consumer court held the anesthetist guilty for not warning the operating surgeon about possible reaction from a medication and also held the hospital vicariously liable for the death of the patient 22 years ago. Alleging gross medical negligence and being aggrieved by the same, the complainants approached the NCDRC bench and prayed for Rs. 1,00,20,000/- as compensation. While considering the role of the cardiologist, the Commission noted that "No doubt, the child was about 8 years, school going, thus, there was less possibility of congenital anomaly. But, we cannot ignore that the child was suffering from bilateral squint and chest deformity, which were congenital anomalies. Therefore, the cardiac anomalies cannot be ruled out in this case. Moreover, if one physician (MD) notices functional murmur, then the expected skill from the Super Specialist i.e. the Cardiologist was more and higher degree of care should be there. It is lacking in the instant case and unfortunately, the child was declared fit for GA."

Considering the fact that there was no chance for the mother of the deceased for having another child, and also after taking note of the fact that the litigation was pending for 20 years, the Commission awarded the complainants with Rs 1 crore compensation and noted, "In the instant case, since, the Cardiologist –has not been arrayed as a party,  monitory liability cannot be fixed upon him, and therefore, the hospital  is held vicariously liable. Accordingly, we direct the Eye hospital  to pay Rs. 85 lakh; the Anesthetist, shall pay Rs. 10 lakh and the operating Ophthalmologist,   shall pay Rs. 5 lakh to the parents of the deceased child (Complainants) within 6 weeks from today. Beyond 6 weeks, the amount shall carry interest at 9% per annum till its realization. The OP-1 shall further pay Rs. 1 lakh towards cost of litigation."

Makes a sad reading !
