ஆத்து மேட்டுல ஒரு பாட்டு கேக்குது !  -  உங்களுக்கு கேட்கிறதா ! - கேட்டு இருக்கிறீர்களா !!  இளையராஜா இசையில் பிரபலமான  பாடலை நான் பல தடவை கேட்டுள்ளேன் !! - இன்று ஆர்வ மிகுதியில் யூ டியூபில் தேடி பார்த்தேன். எனக்கு யார் என்று தெரியாத ஒரு தாவணி கதாநாயகி  - ஒரு மீசை வைத்து, முழுக்கை சொக்காய் வேட்டி கட்டின [எனக்கு யார் என்று தெரியாத] நாயகனுடன் கிராமத்து பின்னணியில் நிதானமாக நடந்து - ஆடி ! - லா லா ல லா ல லா ல - படித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார்.

ஆத்து மேட்டுல !!   ~ பாடல் இடம்பெற்ற படம் - கிராமத்து அத்தியாயம்  !  முன்னாளில் கிராமம் என்றால் -  ஓட்டு வீடுகளும், ஒற்றைத் தெருவும், ஒன்றாக வாழ்ந்த மனிதர்களும்… நீங்கள் கிராமத்தில் வாழ்ந்து உள்ளீர்களா ! நான் எங்கள் பூர்வீக தூசி மாமண்டூர் கிராமத்திற்கு சென்று வந்தாலும் - சில மணி நேர பயணம் முழு கிராம வாழ்க்கையை உணர்த்தாது. 1970களில் தெருக்களில் மின்சாரம் கிடையாது - அந்தி சாய்ந்தவுடன் - இரவு வாழ்க்கை தொடங்கும். அமைதியாக உணவு பகிர்ந்து உண்ட பின் - கயிற்றுக்கட்டில்கள் தெருக்களையும், மொட்டை மாடிகளையும் - சமயத்தில் வயல் வெளிகளையும் கலகலப்பாக்கும்.  அன்று மக்கள் இயற்கையுடன் ஒன்றிணைந்து வாழ்ந்தார்கள்.  வைக்கோல் போர்கள் சூழ வீடுகள், தெருக்கள், மாடுகள், மரங்கள், பறவைகள் - இயல்பான வாழ்க்கை

ஒரு தெரு… இருபுறமும் ஓட்டு வீடுகள்… வாசலில் மனிதர்கள்; பின்னணியில் தென்னை மரங்கள் — மாறிவரும் தமிழகத்தின் மறைந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு கிராமக் காட்சி.   A photo taken at my native Dusi Mamandur village – removed the odd concrete building and added some more tiled houses – depicting a different scenario – and titling it ‘Gramathu Athiyayam’ led me elsewhere !! 

How Green Was My Valley a American drama film directed by John Ford, adapted by Philip Dunne from the 1939 novel of the same title by Richard Llewellyn hit the screens in 1941. It starred Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, Anna Lee, Donald Crisp, and a young Roddy McDowall. It tells the story of the Morgans, a hard-working Welsh mining family, from the point of view of the youngest child, Huw, who lives with his affectionate and kind parents as well as his sister and five brothers, in the South Wales Valleys during the late Victorian era. The story chronicles life in the South Wales coalfields, the loss of that way of life and its effects on the family.

The fictional village in the film is based on Gilfach Goch, where Llewellyn spent many summers visiting his grandfather, and it served as the inspiration for the novel.  It was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning five,  famously beating Citizen Kane, Sergeant York and The Maltese Falcon for Best Picture, while Ford won for Best Director, Donald Crisp for Best Supporting Actor, Arthur Miller for Best Cinematography, and Richard Day, Nathan H. Juran and Thomas Little for Best Black-and-White Art Direction-Interior Decoration. In 1990, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”

Gramathu Athiyayam (transl. Village Chapter)  directed by C. Rudraiah hit the screen in 1980 when Kamal, Rajnikanth, Sridevi, Sripriya were ruling tinseldom.  However, this film starred little known - Nandakumar, Sundar and Swarnalatha. The songs with music of Illaiyaraja  with lyrics of  Gangai Amaran were hit.  Chockalingam Rudraiah had directed Kamal, Rajni, Sripriya starrer  Aval Appadithan (1978)  - but after Gramathu Athiyayam failed – tried his hand couple of times but those movies never hit the silver screen.
