Cow profile !!

1)     She perhaps would be happy with this profile pic ! ~ and some would envy her ‘conch haaram’ !!

2)     Cows are timid, docile, submissive.  To cower would mean tremble by fear.  This cow was just pinned to the wall and I was trepidating unable to withstand the aggression displayed by the other cow.

Crossroad – literal translation is : குறுக்கு தெரு.  However, the idiom – to be  at  crossroads  would mean : to be at a stage in your life when you have to make a very important decision.

Vetri Kodikattu was a film about the travails of people trying to go to middle East in search of earning good money, but losing out, cheated by Agents.  Vadivelu plays the role of a foreign-returned and his confrontation with Parthiban are hilarious.

When Vadivelu asks Parthiban  -  Dubai 'la nee iruntha address sollu. Without  battling eyelid – he would say - No 6 Vivekanandar Theru, Dubai Kurukku Sandhu, Dubai Main Road, Dubai.  So the address is iconic !!

You know Roads, Streets, By lanes, Santhu, kurukku-santhu and more !!  Ever heard or seen a Straight Street [நேர் தெரு] !!! -  here is one at Poonamallee near Sri Varadharaja perumal temple – Thirukachi nambigal avathara sthalam – the “Nambi” referred is of course – Acaryar Thirukachi Nambigal !!

Triplicane Thinnai veedu !!

Many houses in Triplicane have history behind them – pictured here is an iconic old building – 19 Peyalwar koil street, adjacent to Sri Parthasarathi swami thirukkovil.

The house had an elaborate mound (raised platform /திண்ணை) where Cricket debates would take place.  The house had close to 15 tenants or so and all lived harmoniously.

This beautiful pic was taken by Mr Ramesh Raja back in 2014 and a couple of years later, it was unceremoniously brought down, demolished overnight  by Temple authorities, later converted to Yatri nivas.

Sri Ananthachariyar swami, who took care of Emperuman’s vasthra kottadi is seen sitting – his grandson, Gopi is now doing kainkaryam including upkeep of Perumal vasthrams.

Ides of March ! - stabbing of Julius Caesar; Holocaust and more !!

Ides of March ! - stabbing of Julius Caesar; Holocaust and more !!

The title page of the movie showed ‘shadow of a cross’, with "No war is holy" written across the transept. Constantine’s Sword is the story of James P. Carroll's journey to uncover the roots of war. Carroll, a former Catholic priest whose father (Joseph Carroll) was a famous Air Force general, implies that there has been a relationship between religiously inspired violence and war, beginning with the adoption of Christianity by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in 312 AD.   Carroll focuses on Catholic and evangelical anti-Judaism, and invokes the cross as a symbol of the long history of Christian xenophobic violence against Jews and non-Christians,  from the Crusades, through the Roman Inquisition and the creation of the Jewish ghetto, to the Holocaust.

Odoacer also spelled Odovacer  was a barbarian soldier and statesman from the Middle Danube who deposed the Western Roman child emperor Romulus Augustulus and became the ruler of Italy (476–493). Odoacer's overthrow of Romulus Augustulus is traditionally understood as marking the end of the Western Roman Empire.  When Illus, master of soldiers of the Eastern Empire, asked for Odoacer's help in 484 in his struggle to depose Zeno, Odoacer invaded Zeno's westernmost provinces. During the winter of 487–488, Odoacer crossed the Danube and defeated the Rugii in their own territory. Theodoric invaded Italy in 489 and by August 490 had captured almost the entire peninsula, forcing Odoacer to take refuge in Ravenna. The city surrendered on 5 March 493. Theodoric invited Odoacer to a banquet of reconciliation, where instead of forging an alliance, Theodoric killed Odoacer, and replaced him as king.

In response to Odoacer's dying question, "Where is God?" Theodoric cried, "This is what you did to my friends." Theodoric was said to have stood over the body of his dead rival and exclaimed, "The man has no bones in his body." The killing took place this day in AD 493 !!

Today is 15th March !!  - History is always interesting ! have you seen Rajnikanth, Sridevi starrer SP Muthuraman directed movie “Priya” shot in Singapore, with soothing music of Isaignani Illayaraja.  It was a story of Sujatha, which was distorted beyond a point !!  Though Sujatha detective novels are all about Ganesh – Vasanth – the character of Vasanth was not featured in the movie and somewhere it was reported that the Director could not finalise the visa for the artiste who was to play Vasanth !!!!

A cursory search on web today  revealed these as International Headlines :

Moving away 15th March is significant – “the Ides of March” ! what ?

The Ides of March  is the 74th  day in the Roman calendar, corresponding to 15 March. It was marked by several religious observances and was a deadline for settling debts in Rome.  In 44 BC, it became notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar, which made the Ides of March a turning point in Roman history.

The Romans did not number each day of a month from the first to the last day. Instead, they counted back from three fixed points of the month: the Nones (the 5th or 7th, 8 days before the Ides), the Ides (the 13th for most months, but the 15th in March, May, July, and October), and the Kalends (1st of the following month). Originally the Ides were supposed to be determined by the full moon, reflecting the lunar origin of the Roman calendar. In the earliest calendar, the Ides of March would have been the first full moon of the new year.

On Ides of March day in 44 BC, Julius  Caesar was stabbed to death at a meeting of the Senate. As many as 60 conspirators, led by Brutus and Cassius, were involved. According to Plutarch, a seer had warned that harm would come to Caesar on the Ides of March. On his way to the Theatre of Pompey, where he would be assassinated, Caesar passed the seer and joked, "Well, the Ides of March are to come", implying that the prophecy had not been fulfilled, to which the seer replied "Aye, they are come, but they are not gone."   This meeting is famously dramatised in William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, when Caesar is warned by the soothsayer to "beware the Ides of March."  The Roman biographer Suetonius identifies the "seer" as a haruspex named Spurinna.

Those movie buffs would recall Rajnikanth playing Julius Caesar in the movie Priya !!. Caesar's assassination opened the final chapter in the crisis of the Roman Republic. After his victory in Caesar's civil war, his death triggered a series of further Roman civil wars that would finally result in the rise to sole power of his adopted heir Octavian. In 27 BC, Octavian was raised to be emperor Augustus, and thus he finally terminated the Roman Republic.  Writing under Augustus, Ovid portrays the murder as a sacrilege, since Caesar was also the pontifex maximus of Rome and a priest of Vesta. On the fourth anniversary of Caesar's death in 40 BC, after achieving a victory at the siege of Perugia, Octavian executed 300 senators and equites who had fought against him under Lucius Antonius, the brother of Mark Antony. The executions were one of a series of actions taken by Octavian to avenge Caesar's death.

The worst crime against humanity would be ‘the Holocaust’ – and it is not Hitler or Mussolini alone to blame and that the other Christian world cannot stand exonerated for this chilling crime against fellow humans, in the name of religion.

The Holocaust saw the mass murder of both Greek Jews and ethnic Greeks. Greek Jews died mostly as a result of their deportation to Auschwitz concentration camp, during World War II. By 1945, between 82 and 92 percent of Greek Jews had been murdered, one of the highest proportions in Europe. Before the war, approximately 72,000 to 77,000 Jews lived in 27 communities in Greece. The majority, about 50,000, lived in Salonica (Thessaloniki), a former Ottoman city captured and annexed by Greece in 1912. Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria invaded and occupied Greece in April 1941. During the first year of the occupation, Greek Jews as well as Christians suffered from famine, property confiscation, and hostage killings.

In March 1943, just over 4,000 Jews were deported from the Bulgarian occupation zone to Treblinka extermination camp. From 15 March through August, almost all of Salonica's Jews, along with those of neighboring communities in the German occupation zone, were deported to Auschwitz concentration camp. After the Italian armistice in September 1943, Germany took over the Italian occupation zone, whose rulers had until then opposed the deportation of Jews. In March 1944, Athens, Ioannina, and other places in the former Italian occupation zone witnessed the roundup and deportation of their Jewish communities, although more Jews were able to escape than in the earlier deportations. In mid-1944, Jews living in the Greek islands were targeted. Around 10,000 Jews survived the Holocaust either by going into hiding, fighting with the Greek resistance, or surviving Nazi concentration camps.

Following World War II, surviving Jews faced obstacles regaining their property from non-Jews who had taken it over during the war. About half emigrated to Israel and other countries in the first decade after the war. The Holocaust was long overshadowed by other events during the wartime occupation, but gained additional prominence in the 21st century.

On 15 March 1943, thousands of Jews in Salonika, Greece, were deported from ghettos to Auschwitz-Birkenau. A silent march  is held every 15 March from the center of the city of Thessaloniki to the old train station to honour the Jews deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. Speeches are given at the Freedom Plaza where there is a commemorative sculpture of the Holocaust.

I am not a votary of celebrating Birthdays of people who have died… but today, perhaps we must remember this hero for his  deed and martyrdom -  on what would have been his 48th  birth day -~ yes he died young at 31  (pictured at the start) ……. He did enough for the country.   Sandeep Unnikrishnan rose to become a Major in the Indian Army serving in the elite Special Action Group of the National Security Guards (NSG).  The wounds of Bombay carnage is slowly dying off for rest of the Nation [would ever remain a scar for the Nationalists and those who have had personal loss] – the valiant Major gave his life fighting  terrorists in the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.

On the occasion of the 48th Birth Anniversary of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Tributes were paid at Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road, Yelahanka, Bangalore, by the Parents of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Ashok Chakra.  Remembering the hero of 26.11 attacks with a heavy heart !!

SYMA medical camp for Conservancy workers - Urbaser Sumeet

Srinivas Youngmens Association (SYMA) from its founding days is deeply wedded to social service and it started with keeping the environs of Triplicane clean and hygiene.  A clean environment is a public facility as it is  a shared resource that benefits everyone.  A good clean environment is the very basis of good health and quality life for all members of the civil society.

The Manzanares  river is in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, flowing  from the Sierra de Guadarrama, passing  through Madrid, and eventually emptying into the Jarama river, which in turn is a right-bank tributary to the Tagus.  Madrid   is the capital and most populous municipality of Spain.   Madrid lies on the River.

Great value is often associated with a clean place.  A clean city is a strong reflection of our moral and civic values. They do not just come by chance. They require – good strategy, execution, responsibility and dedicated maintenance.  .. .. and in ensuring that WE all have a role .. .. sad, in a city of literates, people throw waste from their housetops, fling garbage bags from their two wheelers and generally do not deposit them in bins or handover them to conservancy workers.

Almost everyone of us would feel bad on seeing things unclean and many would complain too – we expect that workers should be around 24 X 7, keep things clean and tidy – yet not many would appreciate the good work (when done) – recognize those unrecognized faces who ensure the tidiness.  SYMA chose to be different.  .. for WE have a role in appreciating the good work of unsung heroes.

Life in 1980s and in 2020s – certainly has changed .. .. those days, in Triplicane, we had long winding houses (resembling lanes) – there were tenants happily co-existing.  Now we have multi-storeyed apartments – people living in flats, mostly not knowing thy neighbour.  This is no post on harmony but on solid waste ! – those days there would be a cement dust-bin infront of every house or in between – a round concrete dust bin kept by Corporation.  Corporation workers would come (with bullock-cart) clean and collect garbage; remember streets would be cleaned (with brooms) twice a day. Roads / the area was clean – not any longer ! – why, and who is to be blamed ?

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, campaign was launched on 2nd Oct 2014 at Rajghat by our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji.  The mastermind scheme  was India's largest cleanliness drive to date with three million government employees and students from all parts of India participating in 4,041 cities, towns, and rural areas.  In Chennai as in  most other cities -  cleanliness and conservancy is a major issue.  There are no public toilets in most places and in places where there is one, it is not usable condition.  Elsewhere, it is a  legal requirement for public toilets to be provided with the basic toilet amenities, namely toilet paper, liquid soap, hand dryer (or paper towels) and litter bin. The Chennai Corporation is the civic body governing the metropolis of Chennai.  It looks after the removal of solid waste –  every day more than 5000  MT of garbage is collected from the city.

A decade or so earlier, this waste management was handed over to a Private firm (Onyx)  and Chennai residents were thrilled to see modern equipments like composter, compacter, gloved  and uniformed work force – seemingly good but only lasted for some time.  Then the conservancy contract was given to Neel Metal Fanalca, later Ramkay .. ..

Then in Dec 2020, this was contracted to a Spanish firm – Urbaser.  Urbaser headquartered in Madrid is a world leader in environmental solutions, a global company focused on leveraging the value of the world’s resources to build a more sustainable tomorrow.  Sumeet Facilities  established in 1992 is now a Facility Management Services Co.  The JV aims at circular economy solutions managing the waste of this mega city.

Most of us want to keep our house clean and tidy but when it comes to the community – the roads, the place, somehow – people litter the place, throw garbage everywhere and blame everyone else for not keeping it clean.  You and Me too have a fundamental responsibility. The conservation workers do a great job, unmindful of the vagaries of weather, festivities and the like.  When it rains, their job becomes more complicated and more so when trees fall and are to be removed.  While we want them to be at work 24 x 7 – little care is given to them.  Please treat conservancy workers with utmost respect and provide basic amenities for them.  Their health is most important as they strive to keep the environ clean, thereby providing the atmosphere for our good health.

SYMA cares for them – for the good health of all. On 2.3.2025, we organized a Medical camp providing quality health check-up for the conservancy workers of Urbaser Sumeet Zone 9.  Total of 164 persons enrolled, 136 had their vision screened – it was found that 6 of them needed Cataract surgery and 67 of them requiring spectacles.  Various dental issues too were sorted and couple of them had teeth extracted.  Health vaccine was provided and blood test analyzing their health was made.

The Camp was efficiently run by medical and supporting staff of Karpaga Vinayaka Institute  of Dental Science, Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal,  Dr Dinesh Kumar, Dr V Sriram, Dr Amirthavarshini, Dr MM Sridevi, and blood analytical support by Neuberg Diagnostics.  We thank all the associated medical professional, staff of Urbaser Sumeet and all our volunteers.

Good health is compulsory to all and together we will strive to keep the Society and environment clean, hygiene and health.

Jaffar Express hijack ! - killings, claims & counter claims

Remember Mani Ratnam’s movie Thiruda, Thiruda – starring Prashant, Anand, Anu Aggarwal, Heera Rajagopal -  ‘the plot was the stealing of fresh printed bank notes of an incredible 1000 crores value from a  moving train by the henchmen.’ ……….. the Train engine would be cut-off and hijacked !! – thought train hijack can happen only in Cinema.

The Pāratarājas  was a dynasty of Indo-Scythian kings in the territory of modern-day Baluchistan province of Pakistan from circa 125 CE to circa 300 CE. Balochistan   is a historical region in West and South Asia, located in the Iranian plateau's far southeast and bordering the Indian Plate and the Arabian Sea coastline. This arid region of desert and mountains is primarily populated by ethnic Baloch people.  The Balochistan region is split among three countries: Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Administratively it comprises the Pakistani province of Balochistan, the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, and the southern areas of Afghanistan.

The Pakistani province of  Balochistan   bordered by the  provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, sharing International borders with Iran   and Afghanistan, bound by Arabian sea has been in news for all wrong reasons.  The name "Balochistan" means "the land of the Baloch". Largely underdeveloped, its economy is also dominated by natural resources, especially its natural gas fields. Aside from Quetta, the second-largest city of the province is Turbat in the south, while another area of major economic importance is the port city of Gwadar on the Arabian Sea, an emerging future business hub.

Jaffar Express  is a passenger train operated daily by Pakistan Railways between Quetta and Peshawar.  The trip takes approximately 34 hours, 10 minutes to cover a published distance of 1,632 kilometres (1,014 mi), traveling along a stretch of the Rohri–Chaman Railway Line and Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on this  express train in Pakistan's troubled Balochistan province on Tuesday, injuring several passengers, local media reports initially said. The attack on the Jaffer Express passenger train took place near Ab-e-Gum area of Mach Town in Balochistan's Kachhi district, where around six armed men opened fire on the train, spreading panic among passengers, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.  Later media confirmed that it was a case of ‘train –hijack’.  Controller Railways said that the train, comprising nine coaches, had around 500 passengers on board. "The train was stopped by armed men in Tunnel No 8," the controller said.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack. The group is banned in Pakistan, the UK and the US. According to initial reports, multiple travellers were wounded in the attack. Rescue teams and security forces reached the scene, and an operation was planned  to track down the assailants. Railway officials confirmed that the train's driver sustained serious injuries, and an emergency relief train has been dispatched to assist.  A senior police official from the area bordering Sibi, who asked not be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media, told AFP that “the train remains stuck just before a tunnel surrounded by mountains”.

The Balochistan government directed local authorities to take "emergency measures". In a statement, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) said that they have "completely repelled the Pakistani military's ground assault following the seizure of Jaffar Express. After intense clashes, Pakistani ground troops were forced to retreat, but airstrikes from helicopters and drones continue unabated." "The BLA issued  warning: if the aerial bombardment is not halted immediately, all 100+ hostages will be executed within the next hour.

Only Oct last year,  Pakistan Railways announced the restoration of train services between Quetta and Peshawar after a suspension of more than a month and a half. Balochistan has witnessed an uptick in terrorist attacks over the past year. In November 2024, at least 26 people were killed and 62 injured after a suicide blast ripped through a Quetta Railway Station. The oil and mineral-rich Balochistan is Pakistan's largest but least populated province. Balochistan, bordering Iran and Afghanistan, is home to a long-running violent insurgency. Baloch insurgent groups frequently carry out attacks targeting security personnel, government projects and the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects in the region.

On Tuesday, the insurgents opened fire on the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express, carrying 425 passengers in nine bogies, while it was passing through the Mashkaf tunnel near the mountainous terrain of Gudalar and Piru Kunri. The train was coming from Quetta, the capital of Balochistan.  A day later, a Pakistani Army spokesperson announced that the operation to rescue hostages from the  train hijacked by the Baloch insurgents had ended and all 33 militants present at the scene were killed. The spokesperson also said that 21 passengers and four Pakistani Army personnel had died during the security operation.

However the reports were challenged by the  Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) who on Thursday called the Pakistani military's claim related to the Jaffar Express hijacking a "lie", and said that intense fighting was continuing and the Pak forces were suffering heavy losses. "The ground reality is that the battle continues on multiple fronts, and the enemy (Pakistani military) is suffering heavy casualties and military losses," the BLA said in a statement.

The Jaffar Express is named after Mir Jaffar Khan Jamali,  a prominent Baloch tribal leader, active member of the Pakistan Movement, and a close friend of the Mohammad Ali Jinnah. He was the uncle of former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali. The train was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali  in Apr 2003.   Mir Jaffar was an associate of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and  belonged to the Jamali tribe, a powerful and influential Baloch tribe. He actively participated in the struggle for the creation of Pakistan and independence of Pakistan in 1947.  Mir Jafar Khan Jamali led delegations of notable political figures from Baluchistan to the All India Muslim League's annual sessions in Madras (1939), Lahore (1940), Karachi (1941), Allahabad (1942), and Delhi (1943).

Greetings to a good social worker - Mrs Jayanthi

Every public forum is a platform of service.  Many are actively  doing service to society.  Ikigai (生き甲斐, lit.'a reason for being') is a Japanese concept referring to something that gives a person a sense of purpose, a reason for living.

There is one exceptional person in Triplicane, who has been the epitome of service throughout her life.   Mrs R Jayanthi, now Principal of Clarke School for Deaf was  honoured recently by Jenson & Nicholson paints

Happy in sharing one of her many awards !

Corendon Air ~ ..

An Aeroplane is a wonder object – irrespective of the no. of times one may have flown, one looks with interest the air craft, especially its take-off and landing.  Even as I was taking a picture in Chennai, was surprised to read the name of Airline – Corendon Airlines !!

Do you remember this song   ??

Till a few decades ago, flying on an aeroplane was the privilege of elite few – most people had only seen planes from a very long distance – in the film Ninaithale Inikkum’ – some hailed cameraman BS Lokanath for showing aircraft landing !

The Kingdom of Pergamon, was a Greek state during the Hellenistic period that ruled much of the Western part of Asia Minor from its capital city of Pergamon.  Attalus II Philadelphus  was a ruler of the Attalid kingdom of Pergamon and the founder of the city of Attalia.

Corendon Airlines  is a Turkish leisure airline headquartered in Antalya, the fifth-most populous city in Turkey and the capital of Antalya Province.[3] Recognized as the "capital of tourism" in Turkey and a pivotal part of the Turkish Riviera. Antalya sits on Anatolia's southwest coast, flanked by the Taurus Mountains.  The city was formerly known as Attalia and was founded in around 200 BC by King Attalus II of Pergamon. Attalia was soon conquered by the Romans. Roman rule saw the city thrive, including the construction of several new monuments, such as Hadrian's Gate, and the flourishing of nearby ancient cities.  Antalya  changed hands several times, including to the Seljuk Empire in 1207 and an expanding Ottoman Empire in 1391.  Ottoman rule brought relative peace and stability for the next five hundred years. The city was occupied by Italy for three years in the aftermath of World War I, but was recaptured by a newly independent Turkey in the Turkish War of Independence.

The news is -  IndiGo Airlines  has taken on wet-lease six B737 aircraft from Corendon Airlines (XC, Antalya) over the upcoming northern winter – and they are operating in India between Dec 2024  to Mar 2025.  Based in Chennai these aircrafts are operating to no. of destinations.     IndiGo is experiencing a shortage of aircraft due to Pratt & Whitney engines and other supply chain challenges. It is already wet leasing fifteen A320-200s from assorted SmartLynx operators, six B737-8s from Qatar Airways, and two B777-300ERs from Turkish Airlines.

The Wetlease operation means that an airline charters its aircraft to another airline with its crews for a short time during the low season. Corendon Airlines has been collaborating with Spice Jet for many years, as the low season in Turkey and Europe and the high season in India are entering.   It is reported that Corendon Airlines has assigned  35 captain pilots, 35 co-pilots and 140 cabin crew to India every month, along with seven aircraft, for the wetlease operation to be continued for six months.

Interesting !
