the rhythm of life that we fail to notice !

The rhythm of life !

Life: is it all about the wealth we earn, or the things we miss along the way? -  Ponder this.

If you are middle-aged, or beyond, pause and look back 20 years. What were your plans then? Have you reached the goals you set for yourself? And if you did, what happened next?

Perhaps each financial milestone, once reached, felt like a low-hanging fruit, so you set a higher target and began chasing again. The pursuit continued. The goals grew. The finish line kept moving.

Now, after 20 or 30 years, are you truly happy? What do your future plans look like? Many of us consider ourselves highly intelligent because we live in cities, earn well, own apartments, drive cars, and carry the signs of success.

But change the scene.

A green field. A tree. A crow in flight. A dusty village road. An elderly couple. No trendy backpacks. Just a cycle and a cow. The husband gently helps his wife secure the load. And yet, they seem to be living happily ever after.

So who is really missing what? - Perhaps the city dweller has everything except contentment. Perhaps the villager has little except enough. And perhaps the greatest poverty is not lack of money, but lack of contentment /  enoughness.

Allikkeni welcomes another new born !!

Thiruvallikkeni has its own charms – mainly the temple of Sri Parthasarathi and its surrounds !  .. .. yesterday saw this Calf on the banks of holy Kairavini pushkarini -  just trying to get up

"Born only hours ago, yet already standing on its own feet

—the quiet courage of new life."

Slightly edited removing its tethering ropes - what strikes me is its innocence.  Not sure whether it is a he or she !! – and that decides its future totally.  Whether male or female, this calf has no awareness of the future. It is simply experiencing the world for the first time—finding its footing, recognizing its mother, and discovering its surroundings.

"Only a few hours old, this little calf knows nothing of the debates and economics that surround cattle. It seeks only its mother's warmth, its first meal, and the strength to stand. Looking into those gentle eyes, one cannot help but wish that every newborn life—whatever its fate—receives kindness and compassion."

Modern domestic cattle (Bos taurus and Bos indicus) descended from the aurochs (Bos primigenius), a large wild bovine that once roamed Europe, Asia, and North Africa.  Bos Taurus is traced to   Turkey, Iraq, Syria and surrounding regions; while Zebu  (Bos indicus) is traced to the Indus Valley (present-day northwest India and Pakistan).  The last wild aurochs died in 1627 in Poland.

Under natural conditions, cattle are capable of living much longer than most people realize. The cattles’ natural life span is 18 – 25 years with some exceptions lasting even 3 decades.  Dairy cattle generally live 8 – 10 years  but have a tough life once they stop giving milk.

A newborn calf is a precocial animal. Unlike human babies, which are born relatively helpless, calves are neurologically advanced at birth because, in the wild, they needed to be able to follow their mothers and escape predators almost immediately. With a few minutes of their birth most calves stand; they are nursed and within a couple of hours they start walking too.  Within a day of birth,  they can recognize their mother's voice and smell.  Their running and playing are great things to be seen and loved !!

A calf's first milk, colostrum, is vital—it provides antibodies that protect it from disease during its first weeks of life.  In our culture, a newborn calf is often regarded as a symbol of innocence, prosperity, and new beginnings, reflecting the revered place of the cow in our culture.

"Born only hours ago, this little calf knows nothing of the world it has entered. In a land where the cow is reverred, may reverence also mean compassion—not only in words and rituals, but in clean water, nourishing fodder, gentle care, and freedom from suffering. True respect for any living being is measured by how we treat them every day."

"அழுக்கின் நடுவே ஒளி — நிழல்களை மறந்து, அவளின் கண்கள் சொல்கிறன."

அழகான ஆடும், அழுக்கான சூழலும் !!

No political post this –  a post of a Photographer on a centre of attraction.  A brown and white mixed   glossy coat and clear eyes stands in a dusty lane littered with plastic. Your gaze locks on the goat’s bright face and twitching ears; the stark contrast between its clean coat and the dull trash makes the goat appear even more striking.

Remembering Nation's Heroes this day ! ~ Kargil Diwas !!

Earlier it was known as  Purig ~   the  Suru River,  a 185 kilometres (115 mi) long river, that originates from the Panzella glacier enriches it – it is the place in news and apt to be remembered by the entire Nation today – 26th July !

For those who feel cold Chennai is cold in December / January  – life is far far different ! . .. its landscape is mountainous, rugged, and high, the minimum elevation being some 8,000 feet (2,440 metres). The climate is cold and dry, with scanty precipitation that falls mainly as snow in winter. One locality, Dras (Drass), is reputed to be one of the world’s coldest permanently inhabited places, with winter temperatures falling to as low as −40 °F (−40 °C) or colder. Vegetation, mainly grasses and shrubs, is largely confined to river valleys at lower elevations, as the higher places are rocky and largely barren.  It is Kargil.

We have seen Cine heroes donning role of  Army Jawans and applaud them too –  the Nation needs to read and know more about the real heroes who protect the Nation.   In our history books, we have read about 3 battles of Panipat, Plassey, Arcot and more ….. the text books should have the battles of  Tololing  and Kargil ! ~  the Nation today pays homage to the jawans who sacrificed their lives in the 1999 Kargil war against Pakistan.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of pride and glory of Maa Bharati. On this occasion, my salute to all the brave sons of the country who have accomplished their valour in the defense of the motherland.

If you can't be a Soldier, help a Soldier. If you can't fight at the border, fight the chaos in your neighbourhood. If you can't nurse a soldier's wound, wipe the tears of his family members. If you can’t feed a soldier, pray he sleeps indoors tonight. If you can’t thank him personally, thank his parents. If you can’t help him get back, make sure his body gets home, with all due respect and much more. If you can’t be a soldier, thank them everyday. If you can’t be a soldier, encourage your child to be one. If you can't be a Soldier, learn to at least respect one.

Saluting the heroes of this Mahan Bharat – Remembering Kargil.

Iruttukadai halwada ! Tirunelveli Halwa da !!

Famous Tirunelveli Halwa @ Iruttukadai

Tirunelveli Halwa is a legendary   dessert famous for its melt-in-the-mouth texture and rich ghee flavor. Made from slow-cooked wheat milk, sugar, and generous amounts of ghee, its unique taste is traditionally attributed to the mineral-rich waters of the Thamirabarani River.

Interestingly though there are so many shops in Tirunelveli (available in every place these days!) – there is one shop where crowds throng -   the century-old Iruttu Kadai Halwa (meaning "Dark Shop"), located near the Sri Nellaiyappar Temple in Tirunelveli.

The shops opens only 5 pm and understand that will be closed sooner once the stock of the day is sold !!  Just see the queue waiting in front of this shop.  :  https://youtu.be/N-pUtjPv8j0

.. .. .. any reference to Tirunelveli Halwa would take you to that famous Vikram song from ‘Saami’ – but here is another    பழமையான தமிழ் பாடல் "வண்டே அல்வா துண்டே" (Vandey Halwa Thunde) from 'குசுமலதா' [Kusumalatha]released in 1951 sung by JB Chandrababu and MR Shakunthala

Life often is "[un]fair" race !!!

If you think –‘life is a race! – remember most times it is never a fair race !! Starting the same point may be thought as a fair start .. .. ..but !!

Life is no contest of feet and steel;

when wheels wake to their own heartbeat,

the race forgets its name and stride.

When people compare, they conveniently forget or ignore the fact that life does not provide similar situations to all – for some the path is strewn with difficulties. Here in this picture – race about to start between legs and wheels – the start line is the same … .. but there can be a fair race between human / animal legs and propelled wheels – a total mismatch as systems differ fundamentally in power delivery, endurance, terrain handling, infrastructure needs, safety, and social purpose. A fair contest must therefore define environment, rules, and goals so the comparison tests the intended abilities rather than mismatched attributes.

The mismatches  coule be — physical, biological, tactical, social, and ethical !!

Mechanical wheels convert fuel or electricity into continuous high power; legs produce intermittent muscle power and fatigue.   Vehicles sustain higher speeds for long durations without the recovery needs humans have. Humans need rest, hydration, and sleep; vehicles only need fuel or charge and maintenance.  Motors produce instant torque and consistent acceleration profiles; humans take time to reach peak speed and cannot sustain repeated high accelerations.  Wheels are efficient on smooth surfaces; legs excel in uneven, soft, or complex terrain (rocks, staircases, dense undergrowth).

Human reaction time, vision, and balance constrain rapid high-speed maneuvering; vehicles (with driver or autonomous control) can be equipped with sensors and computers to sense and react faster or in different ways.  Human muscles suffer microtrauma and fatigue; biological recovery is slow compared with mechanical refueling or swapping batteries.

Humans and vehicles follow different implicit “rules.”  Next time when you feel defeated, understand that the race was not fair and perhaps you could never have won … .. and it is the same when you think you have beaten someone in the race!

"O my Luve's like a red, red rose

That's newly sprung in June;

O my Luve's like the melody

That's sweetly played in tune."

— Robert Burns (1794)

It is a timeless comparison of love to the freshness and beauty of a newly blossomed red rose. "The rose speaks of love silently, in a language known only to the heart."

Raja Birla Clock Tower, Haridwar

"The Timeless Sentinel of Har Ki Pauri”

– Haridwar's Raja Birla Clock Tower beneath the sacred Night Sky."

Haridwar   the   sacred gateway to the Himalayas, a city famed for Har Ki Pauri, the Ganga aarti, and its deep Hindu pilgrimage tradition. The phrase “the mystic Haridwar” usually points to that spiritual atmosphere rather than a formal title.  It is one of the oldest living cities in India and is closely linked with the Ganga’s descent into the plains.

A n important place in Haridwar is – “Har ki Pauri”

"Har Ki Pauri" literally means "The Steps of Hari (Lord Vishnu)."  Tradition holds that Lord Vishnu's footprint is preserved at the sacred Brahma Kund – the  drops of Amrut (the nectar of immortality) fell at this place during the episode of Samudra Manthan, making it one of Hinduism's holiest pilgrimage sites.  The evening Ganga Aarti, with hundreds of oil lamps offered to the river, is among India's most moving spiritual ceremonies.

Pictured here is the famous Clock Tower (Ghantaghar or Raja Birla Clock Tower) at Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

The tower is officially known as the Raja Birla Clock Tower. It was built in 1938 by Raja Baldev Das Birla and stands about 66 feet (20 m) tall. It has a clock on all four sides and has become one of the most recognizable landmarks of Haridwar.   The tower stands on Malviya Island, opposite the sacred bathing steps of Har Ki Pauri.

It was taken on 2.10.2019 around 6.40 pm – with Sun setting around half an hour or so earlier, it was   deep blue-black.  The tower illumination had just begun to dominate the scene, which gives it that beautiful warm glow.  This photo  captures the transition from dusk to night—the "blue hour" having just ended—when the illuminated sandstone and brickwork stand out vividly against the darkening sky.

Interesting !

Do Parrots eat wood !! ??

The Hidden Residents of T. Nagar !! ~ what was your breakfast ??

A picture taken a couple of years ago in busy T Nagar (Venkat Narayana Road) – Parakeets pecking and perhaps eating tiny fragments of age-old tree !

Rose-ringed Parakeets   do not eat wood. What you captured is actually an interesting natural behavior.  Perhaps they were searching for insects or grubs: Dead or decaying wood often contains beetle larvae, termites and other insects. Parakeets sometimes chip away at soft wood to reach these protein-rich morsels. They occasionally gnaw bark and decaying wood to obtain trace minerals or simply to wear down their constantly growing beaks.

Rose-ringed Parakeets are cavity nesters.  they may have been enlarging an existing hole in the tree for nesting.   Occasionally they peel bark to reach seeds hidden in crevices or to taste sap, though this is less common.

It  is the reality of  urban wildlife surviving amidst concrete and traffic.

Thousands of vehicles roared past that old tree every hour. Yet, within its weathered trunk, generations of parakeets had found a home.  A parakeet perched quietly on a branch is always a pleasing sight. But two parakeets busily chiselling away at the weathered trunk of an old tree, right in the heart of bustling T. Nagar, tell a far deeper story. Amidst the incessant roar of traffic, concrete buildings and urban bustle, these vibrant birds continue to find shelter, raise their young and carry on the timeless rhythms of nature. It is a gentle reminder that the city is not ours alone; even in the most crowded neighbourhoods, wildlife quietly adapts, survives and coexists with us.

those glorious moments spent with GM Kidambi Sundararajan !!!

For the die hard Cricket  fan, 11.7.2026 was not good -  Shreyas Iyer  had close to the worst possible start to his captaincy career losing  all six completed matches, including losing to Ireland for the first time in international cricket - 2-0 in the series - then 4-0 against England.  .. what a fall for the Champions of T20I

At Triplicane (for SYMA) it was a great day – our Educational Aid function and this a post on a sweet, humble Sports person who by his demeanour gave us very pleasant feelings..  ..  not often one could sit near and converse with a Grand Master !!

Chess is not a battle between black and white pieces; it is a dialogue between two minds. Victory belongs not always to the more intelligent, but often to the wiser. Intelligence discovers possibilities; wisdom chooses the right one. That is why Chess has long been regarded as a game of wisdom rather than merely a game of intellect.  The game encompasses – shrewdness, thinking ahead,  understanding that every move has consequences; there can be sacrifice for a greater goal, one needs to be patient rather than impulsive; learn from mistakes and always look beyond the obvious.

"Every Grandmaster has mastered the sixty-four squares; the truly great also win hearts with their simplicity. A cherished moment with Grandmaster Kidambi Sundararajan, where the conversation was far more memorable than the photograph itself."

A Grandmaster's mind is not merely one that remembers openings or calculates variations. It is a mind that sees possibilities where others see only positions. To the casual observer, Chess is a game of sixty-four squares. To a Grandmaster, it is a universe of ideas, patterns and subtle decisions. It is this ability to perceive order amidst complexity that distinguishes an exceptional player from an ordinary one.

Among Indian chess circles, Kidambi Sundararajan is admired not only for becoming a Grandmaster but also for his humility, patience, and willingness to mentor younger players. Those who have met him often remark on his approachable nature and thoughtful personality.

Kidambi Sundararajan became India's 19th  Grandmaster in 2009. Since then, Indian chess has grown at an extraordinary pace. Today, India has nearly 100 Grandmasters, including prodigies such as R. Praggnanandhaa, D. Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R. Vaishali. Players like Kidambi belong to the generation that bridged the era between Viswanathan Anand's pioneering success and India's emergence as a true chess powerhouse.

A Grandmaster (GM) is the highest regular title awarded to chess players by the FIDE (the International Chess Federation). It is a lifetime title and is recognized worldwide as a mark of exceptional chess skill. The official Grandmaster (GM) title was introduced by FIDE in 1950.  Before 1950, the term grandmaster was used informally to describe the world's strongest players. There were no universal rules or official certification. Interestingly, the first Grandmasters did not have to earn "GM norms", because those qualification rules did not yet exist.

The first Indian to be awarded the title of Grandmaster (GM) was Viswanathan Anand. He achieved the title in 1988, at the age of 18, becoming a pioneer for Indian chess. Before Vish Anand, Manuel Aaron became India's first International Master (IM) in 1961

The Man of the post Kidambi Sundararajan, born in 1982,  exceptionally talented – his journey to the GM title included earning three Grandmaster norms:

•          July 2005 – Canadian Open International Chess Tournament (1st GM norm)

•          August 2008 – Badalona International Open, Spain (2nd GM norm)

•          May 2009 – Dubai Open (3rd and final GM norm)

After completing the required norms and satisfying the rating requirement, FIDE officially awarded him the Grandmaster title in 2009.   He attained his peak FIDE rating: 2526 (January 2010).

In the first round of the 2018 Chess.com Isle of Man International, GM Sundararajan Kidambi was paired against Vladimir Kramnik, the 14th World Chess Champion, whose rating was over 300 Elo points higher. Most expected Kramnik to win comfortably.  Sundararajan had the white pieces and chose the English Opening; exerted pressure on Kramnik's queenside. As the game progressed into the endgame, the advantage dissipated and Kramnik began pressing with an extra pawn. Despite Kramnik's superb endgame technique, Kidambi defended accurately for 77 moves, eventually securing a hard-earned draw in an opposite-coloured bishop endgame.

Though much is dwelt on this game – Sundarajan was to say :  I dont know if it was the greatest moment for me or not, it was a great thing to play a legendary player and draw, yes there were winning chances, but I didn’t manage to play accurate enough. There are several other moments of winning tournaments rather than hold or win one great player. Hard to limit a 30 year chess journey on one point  !!!  - words from the experienced wizkid !

In case you wonder, what is great -     Kramnik is one of the greatest chess players in history. He defeated Garry Kasparov in 2000 to become World Champion and is regarded as one of the finest positional players and endgame experts ever. Sundararajan was not merely defending from the start—he actually had the initiative in the early middlegame before the game equalized. For many Indian fans, that game symbolized Kidambi's ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with the very best.

The rivalry between Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik is one of the greatest and most evenly balanced in modern chess history.  Overall they played 93 matches – with 71 draws each had 11 wins. Their most famous encounter was the World Chess Championship 2008 in Bonn, Germany.

Yesterday at NKT National Girls High School, SYMA conducted its annual Educational aid function.  Mr Sandeep Somani, Vice-President – Finance & Company Secrerary, Prodapt Solutions Pvt Ltd;  Mr M Balasubramaniam, Director – Mangal Tirth Estates Pvt Ltd & Sri Kidambi Sundararajan, Grand Master (Chess) were the Guests of honour.

As  Sri Kidambi Sundararajan walked in – almost half an hour before the scheduled start, his humility and the way he spoke us to all was delightful. He is a genius in every sense of the word - Chess teaches one to think before moving; humanity  teaches one to think before speaking. GM Kidambi Sundararajan appears to have mastered both. His games exhibit clarity of calculation; his writings exhibit clarity of thought. One engages the intellect, the other the reader's mind.

During our conversation, I found not merely a Grandmaster of chess, but a gentleman of quiet humility and wisdom. It is often said that true greatness carries little noise. In GM Kidambi Sundararajan, one finds an accomplished player whose intellect is matched by simplicity and grace.

The audience consisting of School and College students and elderly people was enthralled by the speeches of the distinguished Guests and for sure each one of them would savour those special moments with the Genius, genial personality – Kidambi Sundararajan.

For me the few minutes spent with him are really, really inspiring, enlightening, moments worthy of remembrance ever.  Thank you Sir !!
