Tiger-nap ! (Catnap) - sleep without guilt !!

On holidays, do you fall sleep in the Afternoons !  (not a Q to those fortunate to sleep on all days of the week !)  Sleep is every day activity.  Many a times, when you get up after a short [or long sleep in AN] – you may have some confusion on the time of the day – is it morning or evening ?

A few decades ago, most people believed sleep was a passive activity during which the body and brain were dormant. “But it turns out that sleep is a period during which the brain is engaged in a number of activities necessary to life—which are closely linked to quality of life.”

For many of us  addicted to social media, the sleeping time is getting reduced.  When one is sleep-deprived, eyes and mind crave for a nap.   Napping offers various benefits for healthy adults, including: relaxation, fatigue reduction, increase in alertness, good moods, quicker reaction and better memory.  The timing of sleep in humans depends upon a balance between homeostatic sleep propensity, the need for sleep as a function of the amount of time elapsed since the last adequate sleep episode, and circadian rhythms which determine the ideal timing of a correctly structured and restorative sleep episode.

Siesta,  a ‘Spanish’ word  from the Latin hora sexta – "the sixth hour" (counting from dawn, therefore noon), hence "midday rest”.  It is the  traditional daytime sleep of Spain, and through Spanish influence, of many Latin American countries. Factors explaining the geographical distribution of the modern siesta are mainly high temperatures and heavy intake of food at the midday main meal.   The "siesta" can refer to the nap itself, or more generally to a period of the day.

The afternoon sleep is often called ‘Catnap’. A catnap is a short sleep, usually one which you have during the day.   The phrase dates back to at least the early 1800s, with notable literary use in 1916 by Edgar Rice Burroughs in "The Son of Tarzan."  The term takes its origin from how cats take a series of naps throughout the day and night. This idiosyncratic cat-like behavior is thought to help cats stay their alert and agile selves, and humans can take afternoon napping to reap similar benefits. There’s no medical definition of a catnap, and there’s no strict limit on how long they last.

In case you get confused when you get up of the time of the day ! – thinking of getting up, brushing your teeth as in the morning, while it is evening, don’t feel bad and never start crazily querying on forums and searching on web.  If you do so, you might get influenced by some modern phraseology like :

Confusional arousals -  a sleep disorder that causes you to act in a very strange and confused way as you wake up or just after waking. It may appear that you don’t know where you are or what you are doing. One may have slow speech, stammering, confused thinking, poor memory, blunt responses !!   When a confusional arousal occurs, you may seem to be awake even though you have a foggy state of mind. Episodes often start when someone else physically wakes you up forcefully.

Sleepwalking or shouting during an episode is common. Some people with confusional arousals also grind their teeth.  Confusional arousals is considered a parasomnia.

‘Sundowning" refers to a state of confusion that occurs in the late afternoon and lasts into the night. Sundowning can cause various behaviors, such as confusion, anxiety, aggression or ignoring directions. Sundowning also can lead to pacing or wandering. Sundowning isn't a disease. It's a group of symptoms that occurs at a specific time of the day. These symptoms may affect people with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.

There is still some stigma about naps but as long as it does not affect your work, your mind or your night sleep, never mind.  Don’t have any guilt, it is acting to the demands of body and mind.  Sleep well and happy – have naps and do not have interrupted sleeps.  Life is too beautiful to be spent worrying.

Pictured here is a White Tiger – cat-napping at Vandalur even as restless visitors wanted it to be active  ! – it did get up to the amusement of onlookers. White tigers, a color variant of Bengal tigers, sleep 16-20 hours per day on average, much like other tigers.  They are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk for hunting, so they rest extensively during daylight in shady spots like thickets, caves, or under trees to conserve energy after intense bursts of activity.

This long sleep helps them recover from high-energy hunts, maintain their large body mass (up to 500 pounds), and avoid human conflicts by aligning rest with daytime human activity. However, life is different for them in captivity.  Captivity alters white tiger (as is the case of most caged / zoo animals) sleep patterns, reducing total sleep time compared to the wild (16-20 hours daily) while increasing fragmented resting and stereotypic behaviors like pacing due to unnatural environments and feeding schedules.

Fresh from today’s afternoon sleep – yours friendly aasami sirippu sinthanaiyaan.

close-up of Tiger !!

A ferocious Tiger cast in bronze – not sure, whether you like this close-up.  A close-up photo is a picture taken from very near a subject or taken with zoom lens, making it appear large and detailed, focusing on specific features or textures, often to highlight emotion, detail, or a small part of something not usually noticed

This Tiger  statue is known for its ferocious appearance and is a popular spot at Mysore Palace, also known as Amba Vilas Palace, once the official residence of Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of kingdom of Mysore.    At the main entrance, there are bronze tigers, sculpted by British sculptor Robert William Colton, on either side of the walkways leading up to the palace.

Cyclone Ditwah !!

-used to be  the usual weather bulletin.  In recent times, we have too many people, announcing so many things and just like a Coin toss – by law of probability some may turn true !!  So in social media we keep hearing predictions on how the Cyclone is going to behave and how long it would rain

In the past week or so, we have heard so much of  புலி வருது !!

Ditwah was just a ‘cyclonic storm’, the second weakest category. There are four categories of cyclones stronger than this, based on the wind speeds associated with them, and their damage potential.  But it devastated Sri Lanka – killing more than 450, displacing 1.5 million and causing economic loss estimated to be around $7 billion

Social media threatened that it would hit our coast too .. for  the third straight day, winds from the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah battered Chennai and surrounding districts on Wednesday as the weakened weather system stalled unusually close to the Tamil Nadu coast, which meteorologists say has prolonged heavy rainfall across the region.

Ditwah emerged from a low-pressure system that had developed in the southwest Bay of Bengal around November 25. This area in the north Indian Ocean basin is not commonly known for cyclone formation, but two favourable conditions happened at the same time, making the emergence of Ditwah possible. The Intertropical Convergence Zone, a region near the equator where northeast and southwest trade winds converge, resulting in lots of clouds and thunderstorms, was quite active during that time. Simultaneously, a system of equatorial waves — disturbances in the atmosphere that happen periodically in this region — also developed. The interaction of these two systems provided the required fuel for the emergence of Ditwah on November 27.

The system was about 90 km northwest of Batticaloa on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. Winds associated with Ditwah ranged between 60 and 90km/hr, meaning that it was a low-intensity cyclone but its landfall caused devastation.  Once a deep depression, Ditwah has now weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area along the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline. Despite this, its slow inland drift has kept rain bands rotating over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and northern coastal districts, triggering repeated bursts of heavy rainfall since early Tuesday.

Meteorologists say Ditwah’s stall, rather than its intensity, is what has made it impactful.  The movement speed of Cyclone Ditwah varied, but it generally moved slowly,   it experienced a "remarkable slowdown" at one point, moving as slowly as 2-3 km/h, which led to prolonged, heavy rains in the region, is what is stated now.

the roar of a Tiger !!

Don't stare at me ! - just relax !!

How stressed are you ?  - what is your immediate reaction on seeing this picture. To me, the majestic Tiger looks too calm and relaxed, knowing thyself and not under any stress !!

Stress is how we react when we feel under pressure or threatened.  It usually happens when we are in a situation that we don't feel we can manage or control. (Do you feel you have too many of them ! – in fact most of us have !)  Stress is a  state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. Stress is a natural human response that prompts us to address challenges and threats in our lives. Everyone experiences stress to some degree. Stress is a natural reaction to specific demands and events, but ongoing stress can affect a person’s health and wellbeing.

These demands can come from work, relationships, financial pressures, and other situations, but anything that poses a real or perceived challenge or threat to a person’s well-being can cause stress. Stress can be a motivator!  and it can even be essential to survival!! . The body’s fight-or-flight mechanism tells a person when and how to respond to danger. However, when the body becomes triggered too easily, or there are too many stressors at one time, it can undermine a person’s mental and physical health and become harmful.

The key to success is staying relaxed – be it a Sunday morning or an hour before the exams !  The stress response is characterized by a hyper-metabolic state. This response involves increases in brain wave activities, heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing and often involves racing thoughts and a sense of uneasiness.

Mental health which is most important  is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right,  crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development. Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. It exists on a complex continuum, which is experienced differently from one person to the next, with varying degrees of difficulty and distress and potentially very different social and clinical outcomes.

Be mindful of yourself and the surroundings and the threats that could be around. Mindfulness is an opportunity to go within, be in your body and to be Present. Even a short mindfulness practice can have lasting effects throughout the day and can increase the ability to focus, reduce stress and calm an overthinking mind.

Just stepping away from something stressful for a few minutes or taking time away from your normal routines and thoughts can give you enough space and distance to feel calmer. Read a book or a magazine, or see Vadivelu comedy clips  even if it's only for a few minutes.  Take a cold water  a bath, watch a video of a Cricket match, talk to people, play with a pet or try out a new recipe.  There are a variety of techniques used to improve relaxation. Controlled breathing, visualization, body scans, concentrating on a mantra (repeating of a word or phrase), and progressive muscle relaxation are techniques often used to enhance relaxation.

To put it simple, when you see a picture just see and enjoy it – if you have time, do read and enjoy the post too.
