Cubbon Park—officially called Sri Chamarajendra
Park—one of Bengaluru’s most treasured green spaces. Situated
in the very heart of the city, it provides a striking contrast to the traffic
and densely built surroundings outside.
The
park was laid out in 1870, soon after the completion of
the Attara Kacheri—today’s Karnataka High Court. It was conceived by Major General
Richard Sankey, then Chief Engineer of Mysore State. Initially
called Meade’s
Park, it was later popularly named after Sir Mark Cubbon,
a former Commissioner of Mysore. Its present official name commemorates
Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar.
