Gold rates fall; IPL ~ Book Fair and traffic diversions in Chennai - Apr 2013

It is summer… day are getting hotter as Chennaites are sweltering under hot weather ~  one starts feeling the heat right from the early morning and day gets extended…  there are crowds are unexpected places…. the gold shops.

Men were worried and women continued to be excited as on 13th April the gold rates touched a new low Rs.2632 per gram of 22 carat and 2804 of 24 carat.  The ETF is also dangling low and one unit of Kotak Gold is around 2550…. ! right time to buy.. If you are fond of music and MS [doyen MS Subbulakshmi] – you may have more reasons as Tanishq introduced coins with MS face…

For long areas like Mambalam were famous for mosquitoes.. jokes in magazines were ripe about them in those places… there used to be a team in league called ‘mambalam mosquitoes’  ~ things have changed – not that mosquitoes are gone – they are now found in all areas be it Triplicane, Mylapore, Madipakkam, Nanganallur, Nungambakkam ~ once people used to say that mosquitoes will not be there in upper floors [perhaps they cannot fly high !] ~ that theory also has hit for an IPL maximum….

The news now is that Chennai Corporation will carry out fogging operations in all stormwater drains and along all streets every day.The civic body on Saturday directed malaria workers to cover the entire 1,630 km of stormwater drains along bus routes and interior roads in its fogging operations. Earlier, the civic body had been fogging streets twice a week. According to officials, the massive fogging operation will facilitate the reduction in malaria cases.

The IPL at Chepauk on Sat caused traffic havoc ~ the end was different as Dhoni tweeted ‘Give Sir Jadeja 2 to score in 1 ball ~ he will achieve with a ball to spare !’ – more of that in my cricket post. There could be more traffic chaos as CSK play Pune Warriors at Chepauk today @ 8 pm……….

With summer, more people come to Marina to enjoy the natural breeze and enjoy cooler atmosphere. Beach is crowded as chennaites enjoy the sea breeze……… With summer vacation starting and crowds thronging Marina beach to beat the heat, police have introduced diversions to regulate traffic. To ensure the safety of pedestrians, Chennai traffic police have implemented a few diversions between 5pm and 8pm from Sunday

In Chennai, Mount road is the arterial road, which is already one way due to Chennai Metro. Kamarajar Salai [beach road] is one good broad road where traffic by and large moves freely.. the new traffic arrangement would render Beach Road one way in parts ~ mainly from Presidency College Junction [Kannagi statue] till Ezhilam [Labour statue]….. vehicles coming from IG Office [Gandhi statue], V House; proceeding towards Parrys will have to take left near Marina ground, travel in Pycrofts road [Bharathi Salai], take right in Bells Road [Jagjivan Salai], go around Chepauk, re-connect beach road nearer Madras University. Similarly, those coming from Wallajan Road, cannot take a right turn nearer Chepauk stadium, will have to go to beach road take right travel on the beach road.  The diversions will come into effect only in the evenings between 5pm to 8 pm daily, until further notice.

One curse of Chennai is unauthorized parking of vehicles at places – the authorities should take stern action against those vehicles parked [many a times invalid carriages occupy portion of the road] choking the traffic and adding to the congestion.

Chennaites are fond of reading books… with Tamil Puthandu Vijaya varushan just born, the TN Govt. is organizing a book fair from today till 24th of this month ~ this time at Model school grounds [nearer V House ~ after QMC]
