Paki Supreme Court says Imran Khan incapable of running Government !

I remember that Pongal Test in 1980 at Chepauk when Pak toured India.  The star Batsman Zaheer Abbas failed miserably, getting out to mild Roger Binny;  some Pakis claimed that to be result of some black magic ! .. .. at Chepauk Sandip Patil debuted and we so eagerly looked forward to his making runs – glaring at him in the net practice before the commencement of the Test.  Sunil Gavaskar was to make 166 and Kapil bowled so well – a 7 wicket haul in the 2^nd  essay ensured a comfortable 10 wicket victory for India.  Imran Khan ran in long and hard and bowled fast – took 5 wickets too – those days there were rest days the 4^th  day -  18^th  Jan was a rest day.  Years later, in Feb 1987, Imran captained Pakis and scored a ton, which was overshadowed by a brilliant 123 laced with 18 fours and 2 sixers by local lad Krishnamachari Srikkanth.

Writing on Paki Cricket, one certainly has to remember this day 14 years ago -  Bob Woolmer died in mysterious circumstances at Jamaica, a day after Paki’s shocking loss to Ireland in WC.  Former Pakistan speedster Mohammad Amir stunned the cricketer fraternity after announcing an abrupt retirement from international cricket last year. It was pointed out that he was in a rift with team management and was always sidelined after leaving the Test cricket. However, he later cleared it that he doesn’t have any differences with management but lacked support from their end. In the recent turn of events, Amir cited the case of Jasprit Bumrah and stated how he received backing from management’s end despite dismal show. Jasprit Bumrah is deemed as India’s leader of pace attack and has been a match-winner for the Men in Blue on innumerable occasions. However, Amir stated that Indian management had his back while he touched his low in a series against Australia. Nobody questioned Bumrah’s credibility, and he got all the support from his team as well, reckoned Pakistan pacer.

                  One Pakistan Cricketer Tests Positive for COVID-19 ahead of the South African tour. The cricketers other than the player who tested positive for COVID-19 will begin training at the Gaddafi Stadium. After the South Africa Tour, Pakistan fly to Bulawayo and will play  Zimbabwe in three T20Is and two.

Imran Khan himself was a great Cricketer before entering politics.   One recalls that on that tour of 1983 – Imran Khan, Sarfraz Nawaz, Sikhandar Bakht, Jallaluddin – repeatedly overstepped as Indian batsmen found the pace and swing too uncomfortable and lost the series badly. After 2 decades of international cricket, Khan   became a fulltime politician.  In its  long political history, Pakistan  peppered with military coups and martial law, elections 2018 were to be  the second successive transition of power through a constitutional process from one elected government to another. However, political opponents, the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, and international observers such as the European Union alleged that irregularities and election rigging occurred in many parts of the country, particularly in rural and urban Sindh and Punjab provinces.   Imran Khan defeated their own system and became the PM of Pakistan .. and immediately spit venom .. .. on twitter taking  a potshot at our Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji,  over the cancellation of meeting between India and Pakistan. “Disappointed at the arrogant & negative response by India to my call for resumption of the peace dialogue,” he tweeted. “

Now a struggling -  Imran Khan on Wednesday said India will benefit economically by having peace with his country as it will enable New Delhi to directly access the resource-rich Central Asia region through Pakistani territory.  India will have to take the first step. Unless they do so, we cannot do much, he said. India last month said that it desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan in an environment free of terror, hostility and violence. India has said repeatedly that the onus is on Pakistan to create an environment free of terror and hostility. India has also told Pakistan that "talks and terror" cannot go together and has asked Islamabad to take demonstrable steps against terror groups responsible for launching various attacks on India.

In the early hours of 10 March, a balloon with PIA (Pakistan International Airlines) marked on it landed in the Indian village of Sotra Chak in Jammu and Kashmir. The intruder wasn’t welcomed with roses; instead, it was taken into custody by the J&K Police. Suddenly, it felt like post-Balakot February 2019 all over again. Only this time the situation was far more serious, this was no spy pigeon or warplane. But rest assured, the war room was on red alert. .. .. it will have to be linked to cross-border terrorism, because its inimical designs were not only for Kashmir Banega Pakistan but also to revive the lost glory of Pakistan International Airlines that has suffered at the hands of the Imran Khan government, which declared 40 per cent of its pilots had fake licences. This is also not like the time when good friend Malaysia impounded a PIA aircraft due to non-payment of lease.  

Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa said today  that it was time for India and Pakistan to "bury the past and move forward" as he asserted that the peace between the two neighbours would help to "unlock" the potential of South and Central Asia. Addressing a session of the first-ever Islamabad Security Dialogue in Islamabad, Gen. Bajwa also said that the potential for regional peace and development always remained hostage to the disputes and issues between Pakistan and India - the two "nuclear-armed neighbours".

The reality as always is far different !  .. .. Pakistan’s Supreme Court has expressed its displeasure with the Imran Khan government, saying it was incapable of running the country or taking decisions. Hearing the local bodies case, a two-judge bench, headed by Justice Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Justice Sardar Tariq, expressing annoyance over the issuance of an ordinance on delimitation of constituencies by the Punjab government, referred the matter to the Chief Justice, the Express Tribune, Pakistan, reported. During the hearing, the apex court was informed that the decision regarding the census had not been taken by the Council of Common Interests (CCI). “Why hasn’t the Council of Common Interests met in two months,” Justice Isa asked, expressing his anger, the report said. According to the judge, the government and its allies rule in three provinces, and yet not a single decision had been taken by the CCI. “The government is incapable either of running the country or taking decisions,” he added.

He also took exception to the postponement of the CCI meeting despite the court order, terming it an insult to the constitutional institution. According to the court, there were no war conditions that could prevent the CCI from holding its meeting. Justice Isa pointed out that nowadays meeting could take place via a video link. He mentioned that four years have passed since the census was conducted in 2017, the report said. Additional Attorney General Amir Rehman informed the court that the meeting of the CCI would be held on March 24, adding that it was a sensitive matter and therefore the government wanted to take decision with consensus.

At this, Justice Isa asked why the report of the CCI has been kept secret. He observed that if good deeds are kept secret, it would raise doubts in the minds of the people. He further observed that the people should know “what are the provinces doing, and what is the federation doing”, as per the report. The judge expressed his displeasure over the promulgation of an ordinance for fresh delimitation by the Punjab Governor. According to the Election Commission, the ordinance has created complications, he said. Simply put, he added, the Punjab government does not want local elections to be held.

Our neighbour continues to raise false rhetoric and is never ready for true peace! ~ yet some local politicians hail him .. .. and that is cheap politics !!

Buzkashi ... Afghan ......... and one run penalty !!

 

Ever heard of this game .. .. ‘Buzkashi’  (literally "goat pulling" in Persian) a sport !!  in which horse-mounted players attempt to place a goat or calf carcass in a goal.   This is National game of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan,  is the 37th most populous country in the world. It has an area of 652,230 sq km. It is a landlocked country in South Asia. Its capital and largest city is Kabul. Pashto and Dari are its official languages.   It has six bordering countries that include Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Pakistan, and China. Afghanistan is famous for its pomegranates in Asia.  .. .. .. and has been ravaged by internal wars from various militant groups, actively supported by some outside countries !!

The US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, John Sopko, at the House Committee on Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on National Security has said that the Taliban have not significantly changed their high levels of violence, or military and political objectives.  He said that Afghanistan remains exceptionally reliant upon foreign assistance, creating both an opportunity for donors to influence events there as foreign troops depart, adding that “and risks to a potential peace if they reduce assistance too much, too fast, or insist on conditions that cannot be achieved by the parties to the conflict.” Spoko added that the UN Development Programme estimates that poverty in Afghanistan, defined as income of 2,064 afghanis per person per month (around $1 a day), has increased to 68 per cent from its pre-pandemic level of 55 per cent. “Afghanistan is poor and suffers from illiteracy, inadequate infrastructure, weak governance, and now, heavy impacts from the Covid pandemic,” he said.

The plain-speaking letter from the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani spells out that the United States envisages an ‘inclusive’ government in Afghanistan that will allow the Taliban a 50 per cent share in power in exchange for a ceasefire. An interim government for a transitional period of three years will work out new institutional arrangements. All of this will be endorsed through an international conference under the aegis of the United Nations, hosted by Turkey. The Afghan constitution will be revised, with the present one serving as ‘an initial template’.  The Biden Administration first maintained that the Taliban had reneged on the three major commitments made by it in the February 2020 Doha Agreement, namely, cutting off its links with al-Qaeda and the Haqqani Network, reducing violence, and engaging in meaningful intra-Afghan negotiations. Blinken’s letter shows that President Biden has now embraced the policy followed by his predecessor. US forces began to pull out within weeks of the conclusion of the US-Taliban Doha Agreement. This resulted in a spike in targeted assassinations, a growing area of control under the Taliban and greater collection of taxes by it, and dramatically reduced intelligence inputs for the Afghan defenders.

The Afghan people desperately want peace and reconciliation. The question is: at what cost? Pakistan wants a pliant government in Kabul, capable of limiting Indian influence in Afghanistan. The Taliban, under Pakistan’s tutelage, will severely abrogate human rights, end the experiment with pluralism and democracy, destroy emerging Afghan institutions, and reverse the gains made since 2001. This may not be acceptable to Afghan patriots and republicans. Pakistan has got into the habit of being the gatekeeper of Afghanistan’s international interactions. The Pakistan army continues to treat terrorist groups as strategic assets. Even at the height of the insurgency and the killing of American troops in Afghanistan, the United States seemed helpless—concerned, but resigned.

India’s strategic interests in Afghanistan are best protected if India ensures, in association with other involved countries, that Afghans stand on their feet and make their own decisions. If they do so, India will have nothing to worry about, for Afghans value their sovereignty, independence, and their relationship with India. India has so far assisted in constructing roads, dams, schools, clinics, and the Afghan parliament.   India must continue to stand by Afghanistan and sustain its stabilisation with a long-term commitment.

While all is not well at the political front  - they are enjoying success and has reasons to celebrate on playing arena.  At  Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi in Test no. 2415  -  Hashmatullah Shahidi became the first Afghanistan player to score a double-century in Test cricket. Asghar Afghan briefly held the record for the highest individual score for Afghanistan with his 164 before Shahidi overtook him. Before that, Rahmat Shah's 102 against Bangladesh in the 2019 Chattogram was Afghanistan's only hundred in their first five Tests.  It took a grand effort from their acclaimed spinner (IPL hero) Rashidkhan to pull off their 3^rd victory in their 6^th test.    Rashid bowled 99.2 overs across back-to-back Zimbabwe innings and picked up 11 wickets. The other bowlers from both sides picked up a combined 16 wickets from 327.1 overs.

In a bizarre event, Afghanistan were given a run penalty during the 2nd Test against Zimbabwe after one of their fielders deliberately conceded a boundary of the last ball of an over so that Zimbabwe’s No.10 batsman would be on strike in the next over. The unusual incident happened on Day 3 of the Test on Friday, when Zimbabwe were on 281 for 8 with middle-order batsman Sikandar Raza (79*) holding one end. Along with Raza was Blessing Muzarabani, who Afghanistan wanted to have on strike.

Raza hit a yorker through the cover region. The ball stopped inches short of the boundary ropes. This was when fielder Hashmatullah Shahidi did something unusual. While stopping the ball, he put one of his feet over the boundary rope. On-field umpires Ahmed Shah Pakteen and Aleem Dar convened in the middle after the over and signaled that they had decided Shahidi’s act was intentional. An extra run was awarded to Zimbabwe and Raza was allowed to retain strike for the next over. According to 19.8 of The Laws of Cricket, ‘If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the willful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side and the allowance for the boundary and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.’

Brazil suffers new waves of Covid .. .. Toronto thanks Modiji for the vaccine

 

Election fever is catching up in Tamil Nadu.  The ruling AIADMK has  released its second list of candidates -  as many as 27 former ministers have been renominated. The party will contest on its ‘Two leaves’ symbol in 177 constituencies across the state and nine in Chennai.  TN CM Mr Edappadi is in news not for election campaigns but also for taking Covid vaccine today.

 

Miles away, in what underlines the success of New Delhi's vaccine diplomacy, billboards have come up in Greater Toronto area thanking Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji  and India for providing COVID-19 vaccines to Canada. India has been at the forefront of supplying vaccines to various nations in the world and the gesture has earned accolades not only from allies and global bodies such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), but even from individuals committed to the betterment of human society.  Last week, Canada received 500,000 doses of Covishield vaccine, the consignment of which was received by Canadian partner Verity Pharmaceuticals. 

India's outreach was lauded by the WHO last month. "Thanks, India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting vaccine equity. Your commitment to COVAX and sharing COVID-19 vaccine doses is helping 60+ countries start vaccinating their health workers and other priority groups. I hope other countries will follow your example," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had said.  

Back home the  Union health ministry has  expressed concern over the steady rise in the number of daily Covid-19 infections in Maharashtra as well as the rest of the country. "We are very worried about Maharashtra — across several districts. We have seen their names. As we came here, we came to know that very strict lockdown is being imposed in Nagpur in particularly. So we are reaching a situation where those approaches are being brought back. This is a very serious issue for us," Niti Aayog member (health) VK Paul said.  In view of the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Kerala, the Coimbatore district administration has made E-pass and Covid-19 negative certificate mandatory for any passenger coming from the neighbouring state to Tamil Nadu through any mode of travel  As Covid-19 cases surge, residents of Chennai’s T Nagar have written to Tamil Nadu health secretary J Radhakrishnan urging him to enforce mask compliance.  “With reports about a surge in Covid-19 cases, the residents of T Nagar, particularly those residing in the streets off the Usman Road, are a worried lot. Residential apartments are sandwiched between commercial buildings. When Covid-19 was at its peak, most streets in T Nagar were containment areas causing untold miseries to the residents,” he said.

Tamil Nadu recorded 671 positive cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the state tally to 8,56,917. Among these, Chennai reported 275 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 2,37,716. The state recorded five deaths on Wednesday, putting the state toll at 12,530. All five had succumbed due to comorbidities. A total of 532 patients were discharged following treatment, taking the total number of recoveries to 8,40,180. 

Globally it is 11,81,19,333 (affected) & 26,21,944 (deaths).  USA is the worst affected with 2,92,47,035 / 5,28,829.  India is presently 2^nd : 1,22,85,561 / 1,58,189 and is likely to be overshadowed sooner by Brazil which has 1,12,02,305 / 2,70,656.  Russia has 43,02,726 /88,773 while United Kingdom has 42,34,924 / 1,24,987.

In the wake of first wave of Covid – the dreaded thing was the spread, spurt and non-availability of hospital and nursing facilities for the affected.  India, perhaps has handled this too well .. .. .. one must remember, still, people are not totally out of the threat of dreaded Corona virus.  Brazil yesterday recorded more than 2,000 Covid-19 deaths, its worst single-day toll, as the country's hospitals have been over-run by the world's worst infection-rate. While President Jair Bolsonaro resists desperate calls from governors to impose lockdown rules, doctors are being forced to triage patients like they are in a war zone. Piaui state chief Wellington Dias described hospitals where patients endure the disease without a bed, let alone the intensive care they require. 'We have reached the limit across Brazil; rare are the exceptions,' Dias, who leads the governors' Covid forum, said. 'The chance of dying without assistance is real.'  

There were 2,286 Covid deaths on Wednesday and nearly 70,000 new cases in Latin America's most populous country which, over the last seven days, has ranked as the most deadly and most infectious in the world.   Sad to read that in  Brazil's wealthiest state, Sao Paulo, at least 30 patients died this month while waiting for ICU beds !!!  For the last week, Brazilian governors sought to do something President Jair Bolsonaro obstinately rejects: cobble together a proposal for states to help curb the nation's deadliest COVID-19 outbreak yet. The effort was expected to include a curfew, prohibition of crowded events and limits on the hours non-essential services can operate. The final product, presented Wednesday, was a one-page document that included general support for restricting activity but without any specific measures. Six governors, evidently still wary of antagonising Bolsonaro, declined to sign on.  Over the president's objections, the Supreme Court last year upheld cities' and states' jurisdiction to impose restrictions on activity. Even so, Bolsonaro consistently condemned their moves, saying the economy needed to keep churning and that isolation would cause depression. Measures were relaxed toward the end of 2020, as COVID-19 cases and deaths ebbed, municipal election campaigns kicked off and home-bound Brazilians grew fatigued by quarantine.

 

The most recent surge is driven by the P1 variant, which Brazil's health minister said last month is three times as transmissible as the original strain. It first became dominant in the Amazonian city Manaus and in January forced the airlift of hundreds of patients to other states. Brazil's failure to arrest the virus' spread since then is increasingly seen as a concern not just for Latin American neighbours, but also as a warning to the world.  Last week's tally of more than 10,000 deaths was Brazil's highest since the pandemic began, and this week's toll is on track to be even greater after the country posted nearly 2,300 deaths on Wednesday - blowing away the prior day's total that was also a record.

Meetings .. .. .. from where you take the call does matter !!!

Life stands redefined since 2020 .. .. .. more specifically the way meetings were organized and people met have changed !!  .. first is a photo of Sunil Gavaskar meeting Sri Narendra Modiji and the second a zoom meeting – do you find any anomaly in the 2^nd one [there is an obvious one !]

In every Corporate, meetings are inevitable -  the issues are intended to be discussed threadbare in the presence of all stake-holders; sometimes one might feel that more people will have to be included and thus the scope, time might get extended.  Sometimes people feel overwhelmed by the presence of superiors and sometimes people are afraid of talking in front of more knowledgeable persons. .. .. most of that changed as Covid 19 introduced to almost every one the need for keeping communication alive, even when people are not physically present.

The first key to successful conduct of any meeting is scheduling and planning its timing and agenda as also picking up the right stake-holders.  Meetings should be planned with a designated start and end time. Keeping meetings on a schedule is respectful to everyone involved and makes organization easier. When team members know that a meeting will end on time they can plan the rest of their day more effectively. Shorter meetings are usually more productive and when employees know that a meeting will end on time there is less temptation to get off task.

Many executives feel overwhelmed by meetings, and no wonder: by some statistics, on  average, they spend nearly 23 hours a week in them, up from less than 10 hours in the 1960s. What’s more, the meetings are often poorly timed, badly run, or both.  Jokes galore on how painful they are, say the authors, but that pain has real consequences for teams and organizations. Every minute spent in a wasteful meeting eats into solo work that’s essential for creativity and efficiency. Chopped-up schedules interrupt deep thinking, so people end up working late hours .. ..    there is another challenge, as many workplaces have opened up,   some workers easing back into in-house work and some remaining at home, leaders face yet another challenge: What steps can we take to ensure that both team members in the office and at home feel included and valued?

Whether it is in Office; whether it is a physical meeting or virtual - Effective office meetings need structure, order, and flow. Communicate properly before, during, and after meetings to get the most of your time and energy. Engage with your team members at every stage of the process – and ask for feedback on your meeting techniques.

Chaotic scenes from a parish council meeting that descended into farce have been shared far and wide on the internet, after clips of the hilariously charged Zoom call were shared to social media. The conference call between members of Handforth Parish Council held on 10 Dec 2020 started and ended  with councillors trading insults and getting booted from the call. It went  gone viral after clips of it were uploaded to Twitter; the name of one of the meeting’s participants – Jackie Weaver – became the fourth trending item  

May be around this time (Feb 2020) last year – not all would have experienced virtual meetings.  Now Covid 19 has driven the World from student community, teaching staff, Sports, Office, and every other establishment getting used (rather addicted) to the Virtual meeting culture.

Almost 3 decades ago – when we bought a Desktop Computer at home – MSN Messenger was the rage for talking to those in Foreign countries.  It was a technological marvel for us that we can talk on Computer instead of a phone ! .. the conversation would be a bit slow and at times heard with a time lapse .. yet it was a glorious roaring success and boon for most people.

MSN Messenger was  later rebranded as Windows Live Messenger -  was a cross-platform instant messaging client developed by Microsoft. It connected to the Microsoft Messenger service.  The client was first released as MSN Messenger Service on July 22, 1999, and was marketed under the MSN branding until 2005 when it was rebranded under Windows Live.  In June 2009, Microsoft reported the service attracted over 330 million active users each month, placing Messenger among the most widely used instant messaging clients in the world. Later with rampant usage of Mobiles, we were introduced to Skype -  a proprietary telecommunications application that specializes in providing video chat and voice calls between computers, tablets, mobile devices, the Xbox One console, and smartwatches over the Internet. Skype also provides instant messaging services. Users may transmit text, video, audio and images. Skype allowed video conference calls.  At one point in February 2012, there were 34 million users concurrently online on Skype.

Year 2020 was perhaps all about Zoom Meetings.  Zoom Video Communications, Inc. is an American communications technology company headquartered in San Jose, California. It provides video-telephony and online chat services through a cloud-based peer-to-peer software platform and is used for teleconferencing, telecommuting, distance education, and social relations. Eric Yuan, a former Cisco engineer and executive, founded Zoom in 2011, and launched its software in 2013 The company first became profitable in 2019, and completed an initial public offering that year. The company joined the NASDAQ-100 stock index on April 30, 2020. Beginning in early 2020, Zoom's software usage saw a significant global increase following the introduction of quarantine measures adopted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While many individuals were ‘Zoom’ing – Officials were engaged in Teams Meet. Microsoft Teams is a proprietary business communication platform developed by Microsoft, as part of the Microsoft 365 family of products. Teams primarily competes with the similar service Slack, offering workspace chat and videoconferencing, file storage, and application integration Teams is replacing other Microsoft-operated business messaging and collaboration platforms, including Skype for Business and Microsoft Classroom. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Teams has gained much interest as many meetings have moved to a virtual environment.

The California Medical Board is investigating after video emerged of the bizarre moment Dr. Scott Green appeared on video call from the operating theater on Thursday. Green appeared before Sacramento Superior Court Commissioner Gary Link’s virtual traffic courtroom in his surgical scrubs with the beeping of surgical machines behind him.

'Are you available for trial, it kind of looks like you're in an operating room right now?' a clerk of the court asks in the video posted by The Sacramento Bee. 'I am sir,' Green replies. 'Yes, I am available for trial.' All the while, doctors and medical equipment can be seen in the background of Green's video. Once the judge appears and the proceedings begin, Link quickly realizes where Green is standing.

'So, unless I’m mistaken, I’m seeing a defendant that’s in the middle of an operating room appearing to be actively engaged in providing services to a patient. Is that correct, Mr. Green?' 'Yes, sir,' Green responds, as the commissioner notes he should be referring to the defendant as 'Dr. Green.' 'I do not feel comfortable for the welfare of a patient if you’re in the process of operating on that I would put on a trial notwithstanding the fact the officer is here today,' Link continues, noting the officer from Green's alleged traffic incident is present. 'I have another surgeon right here who’s doing the surgery with me, so I can stand here and allow them to do the surgery also,' Green says. Link quickly replies, 'Not at all.'

He continues, 'I don’t think so. I don’t think that’s appropriate. I’m going to come up with a different date when you’re not actively involved or participating and attending to the needs of a patient. Let me see if I can get a different date here.'  'I apologize Your Honor to the court,' Green says. 'Sometimes surgery doesn't always go as...' before he trails off. 'It happens,' Link says. 'We want to keep people healthy. We want to keep them alive, that's important.' The bizarre incident did draw the ire of the Medical Board of California, which controls licensing in the state and suggested that they received a complaint. 'The Medical Board of California expects physicians to follow the standard of care when treating their patients,' a spokesperson said to Law & Crime. 'The Board is aware of this incident and will be looking into it, as it does with all complaints it receives.' 

Zoom court proceedings have provided strange moments since the star of the pandemic. Earlier in February, a Texas lawyer went viral after a filter covered his face during a court case. 'I'm not a cat,' the lawyer clarified. In Peru, there was also an incident of a lawyer caught having sex during a Zoom after leaving his computer camera on.
