மருதாணி… மருதாணி… மருதாணி விழியில் ஏன் ~ Lawsonia inermis (Henna) !!

 

Lawsonia inermis,  may not exactly strike a chord !!  - but for sure, every women knows it too well.  I had taken this picture of its flowers from quite a distance, yet so many were able to identify it easily as ‘Maruthani (Henna)’.   The species is named after the Scottish physician Isaac Lawson, a good friend of Linnaeus.

வட இந்திய கல்யாணங்களில் ஒரு முக்கியமான மத வழக்கம் இது.  கல்யாண குடும்பத்தினர் அனைவரும் ஆனந்தமாக ஆடி பாடி, நல்ல விருந்து உண்பார்கள்.  தென்னிந்திய கல்யாணங்களில் கூட சமீப காலங்களில் 'மெஹந்தி' எனும் சடங்கு பிரபலமாகி உள்ளது.  மெஹெந்திகா என்ற சம்ஸ்கிருத சொல்லில் இருந்து மெஹந்தி என்ற சொல் பெறப்பட்டது. மெஹந்தி மற்றும் மஞ்சள் தூளின் பயன்பாடு பற்றி பண்டைய  புத்தகங்களில் விவரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆரம்பத்தில் பெண்களின் உள்ளங்கைகளிலே மருதாணி போடப்பட்டாலும் சில வேளைகளில் ஆண்களும் பயன்படுத்தினர்.   

மருதாணிக்கு ஓர் அறிமுகம் தேவையில்லை.  முக்கியமாக பெண்கள் விரும்பும் ஒரு தாவரம் இது.   மருதாணி இலை கிருமி நாசினி, கண்ணுக்குப் புலப்படாத கிருமிகளை அழிக்க வல்லது. நகசுத்தி வராமல் தடுக்கும். புண்ணை ஆற்றவும் நல்ல மருந்து. மருதாணி இலையை அரைத்து கைககளுக்கு வைத்து வர, உடல் வெப்பம் தணியும். கைகளுக்கு அடிக்கடி மருதாணி போட்டு வர மனநோய் ஏற்படுவது  குறையும். மருதாணி இட்டுக் கொள்வதால் நகங்களுக்கு எந்த நோயும் வராமல் பாதுகாக்கலாம்.  பெண்கள் தங்கள் கைகளில் மற்றும் கால்களில் மருதாணி இட்டுக்கொள்வது, அது சிவந்து மேலும் அழகூட்டுவதற்காக !!  

Pictured here are the common ‘ Henna leaves’ – மருதாணி  -  Henna is a tall shrub or small tree, standing 1.8 to 7.6 m tall (6 to 25 ft). It is glabrous and multi-branched, with spine-tipped branchlets. The leaves grow opposite each other on the stem.   Henna flowers have four sepals; petals are ovate, with white or red stamens found in pairs on the rim of the calyx tube. The ovary is four-celled, and are fragrant.  Henna fruits are small, brownish capsules.  Its dried leaves are the source of the dye henna used to dye skin, hair and fingernails, as well as fabrics including silk, wool and leather. To make dye, only the leaves that grow in the lower part of the plant are taken.  Its leaves also have antifungal and antiseptic properties. 

Mehndi   is a form of temporary skin decoration using a paste created with henna. In the West, mehndi is commonly known as henna tattoo, although it is not a permanent tattoo.   There are many different designs and forms of mehndi, often known as henna. For celebrations, women traditionally apply mehndi to their hands and feet. Rich brown is the most popular henna color, which is produced using a natural dye made from the Lawsonia inermis plant. But modern patterns now incorporate hues like white, red, black, and gold, enabling more individualized and varied artistic expressions.  

Lawsonia inermis, also known as hina, the henna tree, the mignonette tree, and the Egyptian privet,  is a flowering plant and one of the only two species of the genus Lawsonia, with the other being Lawsonia odorata.  The species is named after the Scottish physician Isaac Lawson, a good friend of Linnaeus.  Isaac Lawson  was a Scottish physician, studied at  Leiden University.   With  Jan Frederik Gronovius he helped fund the printing of Linnaeus' Systema Naturæ in 1735. Lawson obtained his doctorate in medicine in 1737 in Leiden with a thesis on zinc oxide. He later became a physician for the British army and took part in the War of the Austrian Succession. His death was possibly caused by wounds he sustained at the Battle of Lauffeldt on in  1747.  Carl Linnaeus dedicated to him the genus Lawsonia,  the henna of the East.   

A person who regularly submits flowers as kainkaryam to Thirukkovil shared this beautiful garland made by her intertwining maruthani flowers for fragrance. 

The tamil song at the start is from movie ‘Sakkarakatti’ (sugar cube!)  written and directed by Kala Prabhu and produced by his father, Kalaipuli S. Dhanu. It featured debutant Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, the son of veteran actor-director K. Bhagyaraj, in the lead role while Ishita Sharma and  Vedhika.
