learn Maths from Kolangal !!

Learning Mathematics from Kolam art !!

A tessellation or tiling is the covering of a surface, often a plane, using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. In mathematics, tessellation can be generalized to higher dimensions and a variety of geometries.

This intricate kolam pattern features a radial arrangement of diamond shapes built on a grid, showcasing geometric precision typical of   traditional rice flour art aka Kolam.

The design exhibits four-fold rotational symmetry, where rotating by 90 degrees maps the pattern onto itself. Here, repeat of  diamond (rhombus) tiles fill the plane without gaps or overlaps, forming a periodic tiling.

Not sure whether the maker had Mathematics in mind or was a Maths wizard – it was a kolam dedicated to Sri Parthasarathi Perumal – there is always more things to appreciate !!!
