"Get well sooner" - Damien Martyn !

We watched that finals of WC on Mar 23, 2003 with great hopes.  India used so many bowlers – Zaheer Khan, Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Virendar Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Dinesh Mongia & Yuvraj Singh . .. .. but perhaps the match went Aussie way from the very first wayward over by Zaheer.  Australia scored a mammoth 359/2 and India in return could muster only 234 !!

The sporting community is rallying around the 54-year-old, who “is in for the fight of his life”, .. .. the man who scored an unbeaten 88 in that match.

Damien Martyn – is   in a serious condition after falling ill on Boxing Day and being taken to hospital in Queensland where he was diagnosed with meningitis, according to sources close to the family. Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes (meninges) around the brain and spinal cord, often caused by viruses or bacteria, leading to sudden fever, severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, and light sensitivity, requiring immediate medical care, especially for severe bacterial forms, as it can be life-threatening.

Martyn, 54, was taken ill on Boxing Day with news emerging on Tuesday evening of his condition, that he is  currently in an induced coma.  There are hopes he can be brought out of his coma in the coming days.  Former players started to take to social media on Wednesday in support.

Martyn was an aggressive batter, an occasional medium-pacer and distinguished fieldsman primarily in the covers who was capable of creating spectacular run-outs. He also very occasionally kept wicket at first-class level. He was named man of the series in the Border–Gavaskar Trophy in 2004, to help Australia defeat India on the subcontinent for the first time in more than 30 years, and was named in early 2005 as the Australian Test Player of the Year at the annual Allan Border Medal presentations.  He ended his career with 4406 runs in 67 tests with 13 tons and 5346 ODI runs in 208 matches.

After retirement, he played in ICL and couple of years later, got enrolled in IPL for Rajasthan Royals.  In that WC finals in 2003, Martyn stitched a 234 run unbeaten partnership with Ricky Ponting.  Damien made 88 off 84 balls while Ponting scored 140 off 121 balls.

Sending ‘get well’ sooner wishes for Damien Martyn.
