Year 2025 is
drawing to a close and tomorrow 2026 would be born. Everywhere in social media, we would see
people wishing ‘Happy New Year’ !
While wishing our fellow brethren is nothing wrong, perhaps we should be celebrating Tamil New year and not tomorrow. The Gregorian calendar, and its Jan. 1 start date, has its origins in ancient Rome. The goal of many early Roman calendars was to find a way to align lunar cycles, solar years and seasons, as several religious festivals and holidays revolved around the equinoxes and moon phases.
This “Parabhava” is not to be confused with the Parabhava Sutta. The Parabhava Sutta (Discourse on Downfall) is a fundamental Buddhist scripture found in the Sutta Nipata. It serves as a counter-discourse to the Maha Mangala Sutta (Discourse on Blessings), focusing on the behaviors that lead to a person's moral, social, and spiritual decline. According to the Buddha's response to a deity's inquiry, hating dhamma, associating with wicked, laziness, anger, deceiving holy persons, selfishness with Wealth, unreasonable ambition are among those that would cause difficulty. The sutta emphasizes that a person's "downfall" is not a matter of fate but a result of their own actions and character.
So another day, another
month, another year by count !! – things would be as normal as they have been.
