Cyclong on a busy Motor way !

Can you figure out where this photo was taken ?

நெடுஞ்சாலை புளியமரம், அமைதியான வாழ்க்கை வாழும் மக்கள், மிதிவண்டிகள் - கிராம வாழ்க்கை என நாம் நினைப்பது.

When was your last visit to a village ? often we imagine Villages to be green fileds, no bustling traffic, people leading calm life, and travelling in bi-cycles and bullock carts !  -  not exactly.

Took this photo with a zoom lens (from quite a distance) on a very busy Pallavaram Thuraipakkam radial road – bleev me – it took long time for crossing the road as vehicles kept flowing in at high speeds around 5 pm !  -

As more vehicles sped past, saw this man at a distance, happily cycling his way – he saw me taking photo and gave a nice smile as he came closer and I wished him.

Life is too simple to be lived worrying about everything .. .. Smile, don’t worry,  be happy.

Chitraveena strings in protest to Music Academy

Rudraveena (lit.'Strings of fury'; referring to the instrument of the same name) was a film starring Chiranjeevi, Shobhana, Gemini Ganesan, released in 1988 - directed and co-written by K. Balachander.  It reportedly was on the  ideological conflicts between 'Bilahari' Ganapathi Sastry, a reputed carnatic musician and his younger son Suryanarayana "Suryam" Sastry.

The Chitravina (referred as Gottu Vadhyam) is one of the most exquisite of Indian musical instruments. It  is a 21-stringed, fretless lute, quite similar in its playing technique to the Vichitra veena of North India. The chitravīā (‘the wondrous lute’) is played with a slide, something like a long-necked lap steel guitar or a fretless slide sitar/vīā.  With a smooth, mellifluous, and rich sound akin to that of the human voice, the chitravīā is at once both simple and challenging to play: six main strings are plucked with the right hand while the left manipulates a smooth rod across them. The chitravīā also features a unique dual-octave tone - the main strings are grouped such that one can play the same melody in multiple octaves at the same time, resulting in a sound that is at once bright and deep.  It is learnt that Chitravīā is  mentioned in classical Indian literature, notably Bharata's "Nāyashāstra" (c. 200 BC – AD 200). In the Hindu tradition, it is associated with the great devotee Hanumān and is the instrument of his expression of complete devotion to the Lord through sublime music.

Narasimhan Ravikiran is an Indian slide instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and orator, who created the concept of melharmony. He is the son of gottuvadhyam player Chitravina Narasimhan and the grandson of Narayan Iyengar, who was also a Carnatic musician.  He is in news now !!  Renowned Carnatic musician and Chitravina maestro N Ravikiran  has  returned the M S Subbulakshmi (MSS) award bestowed by the Madras music academy in 2017. He also gave back the cash reward of Rs 1 lakh – that was part of the MSS award – with an extra Rs 10,000.

Ravikiran’s act follows recent  Madras High Court (HC) order restraining  the music academy from presenting the prestigious MSS' 'Sangita Kalanidhi' award instituted by The Hindu to Carnatic musician T M Krishna. Ravikiran had seven months ago returned the music academy’s 'Sangita Kalanidhi' title when the music academy announced T M Krishna as the designate for the award this year.

The decision by the Chennai Music Academy to bestow the Sangeet Kalanidhi award to T. M. Krishna, was met with sharp opposition from the Carnatic music community. Many, including acclaimed  Carnatic musicians, expressed their displeasure over the fact that the award was being given to someone who had made derogatory remarks about MS Subbulakshmi, raising questions about the propriety of honoring him with an award bearing her name.  Late Mridangam Vidwan Iyer’s family too announced the return of 'Sangita Kalanidhi' conferred on him following the announcement of the title to Krishna. His grandson Palghat Ramprasad, Trichur Brothers, Ranjani-Gayathri, harikatha artistes Vishaka Hari and Dushyant Sridhar had also announced their withdrawal from  December conference at the music academy. The controversy continues to stir debates on the values upheld by the Chennai Music Academy and its role in preserving the legacy of classical music icons.

Writing a letter to the Chairman of the Music Academy, Murali, Ravikiran explained that he was not returning the award for reasons of disrespect or publicity but for three specific reasons. The first reason,  the Music Academy’s Chairman, Murali, had made efforts to tarnish the reputation of MS Subbulakshmi after her death, which Ravikiran found deeply troubling. The second reason,  was the Academy’s reversal of the recognition for the Sangeet Kalanidhi award initially planned to honor the late Mridangam exponent Palakkad Ramachandran. Ravikiran had set up the trust to honor Ramachandran’s legacy, but the Academy had reversed the plan, leading Ravikiran to return the award. The third reason,   was the Academy’s criticism of his action of returning the award and focusing on the monetary aspect of the decision. This, he stated, caused him personal distress, prompting him to return the prize with an additional 10,000.

The academy’s act has outraged the Carnatic music fans and also polarized the fraternity.

flight !! - escape to survival

Would like a peaceful calm ordinary life or a flamboyant uprising challenging rewarding life ? -  No answer is  right or wrong !!  Flight is today’s subject matter.

In 1980s this Sardar was thought to be the future Star of Indian Cricket, everyone was talking about his composure, class, guile and flight in his bowling but sadly, he faded sooner !!

An aircraft is a vehicle that is able to fly by gaining support from the air. It counters the force of gravity by using either static lift or the dynamic lift of an airfoil, or, in a few cases, direct downward thrust from its engines. The concept of human flight through the air—as by a hot air balloon, for instance—takes flight in the 18th century—though people were figuratively experiencing "flights" of imagination and fancy since the latter half of the 17th and were considered "flighty" slightly before modern aviation.

The hottest news was IPL Auctions and the way some hit the roof.  Chennai Super Kings secured Afghanistan's teenage spin sensation Noor Ahmad for a record-breaking Rs 10 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. Gujarat Titans attempted to match the initial bid of Rs 5 crore, but CSK ultimately outbid them. CSK also acquired key players like Ravichandran Ashwin and Devon Conway, leaving them with seven roster spots to fill. CSK strategy most likely would be ‘spin-diet’ – flight and lure with Ashwin, Jadeja and Noor – with support of Rachin !!

Have heard the words ‘spin, flight, loop’ and the like when referring to spin bowlers. Bishan Bedi had a classy action – his loop and flight was great.  Every spinner needs to have control over the flight, the parabola. Flight does not mean just throwing the ball in the air. Flight means how the bowlers impart spin in a manner that gives  revolutions to the ball with the idea of breaking the ball to exhibit the parabola or dip.

Flight is daily routine of birds and  - one without which they cannot survive.  Birds come in all shapes and sizes and occupy almost all of the earth's habitats. Some birds are lucky enough to hold the upper levels of the food chain, but most species have at least one major predator to worry about. These predators include mammals, reptiles, fish, and even other birds. Most birds have little in the way of protection in a head-to-head fight, so how do they keep safe?

Birds rely on avoidance as their primary means of defense. Flight is a highly efficient way of escaping chasing  predators.  Escaping danger in time is only possible if the bird is able to notice and identify the threat, however, and this is where the birds' keen senses of sight and hearing come into play. Birds have a wide variety of strategies for avoiding predators, ranging from outright speed to displays of intimidation and even trickery. Birds also protect each other by using alarm calls which alert the other birds in the area to the presence of danger.

In most birds, flight is the most important means of escape from predators. Impaired flight abilities due to increased wing loading may increase vulnerability to predation. To compensate for an increase in wing loading, birds are able to independently decrease body mass (BM) or increase pectoral muscle mass (PMM).

The man at the start - Maninder Singh was a  prodigy. He was 15 when his hero Bishan Singh Bedi handed him his first-class debut in a Ranji Trophy knockout match. In 1982, against Pakistan, he became India's youngest ever Test player at the time, at 17 years and 193 days. There we some ODIs when one felt that Maninder was bowling so well and another over or two would bundle the opposition. There was a period in the mid-1980s when it indeed looked like he might emulate Bedi at the highest level of the game, but then Maninder lost his bowling action and the wickets dried up.

If success was difficult to handle at a tender age, failure proved to be devastating. Maninder trained hard but his troubles were more mental. He became a recluse, and developed some bad habits. At 30, when spinners usually reach their peak, his cricket career came to an end. Life brought further challenges after retirement, including an arrest for allegedly possessing cocaine.

Flight, is an escape mechanism !
