in search of drinking water !!

Can we live without plastic !  ~ for many city dwellers, day starts with running after water – with multi-coloured plastic pots !!

Water (H2O) is an inorganic, transparent, tasteless, odorless, and nearly colourless chemical substance, which is the main constituent of Earth's hydrosphere and the fluids of all known living organisms (in which it acts as a solvent. It is vital for all known forms of life, even though it provides neither food, energy, nor organic micronutrients. Its chemical formula, H2O, indicates that each of its molecules contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms, connected by covalent bonds.

When you venture outdoors, you need to prepare for the worst—getting lost or stranded is always a possibility. Knowing where to get drinkable water is not only a good thing if you are hiking on a particularly hot day, but it could also be the difference between a dramatic anecdote and a sad story with a tragic ending.

“If you find a beautiful pool of water and it looks sterile—there’s nothing living in it—don’t drink it,” says an expert. “Life wants water, and if even algae can’t grow in it, it’s probably not good to drink.” Look for animal tracks, swarms of bugs, and green vegetation nearby—if other living things are drinking from it, you probably can, too.

Drinking water is water that is used in drink or food preparation; potable water is water that is safe to be used as drinking water. The amount of drinking water required to maintain good health varies, and depends on physical activity level, age, health-related issues, and environmental conditions. A safe water supply is the backbone of a healthy economy, yet is woefully under prioritized, globally.

It is estimated that waterborne diseases have an economic burden of many billions over the globe. This is especially true for drought- and flood-prone areas,  less than 50 per cent of the population have  access to safely managed drinking water. Chemical contamination of water, mainly through fluoride and arsenic, is present in many places. Excess fluoride prevalent in water  may be affecting tens of millions of people – moreover, many places are affected by extreme water depletion, and the current lack of planning for water safety and security is a major concern. One of the challenges is the fast rate of groundwater depletion   due to the proliferation of drilling over the past few decades.

Here is an attempt of a squirrel at drinking water !

Ex-President sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in Bolivia

Do you know the capital of Bolivia ?  - no, it is not La Paz!  The picture of this person would for sure makes heads turn ! – not only by her looks, by what she was too – she was featured in the cover of Forbes magazine !

Perhaps tinseldom and Politics are places where people rise meteorically, disproportionate to their skills or efforts – and sometimes could fall from the sky too.

Before reading further – one may remember reading about Bolivia and the revolution there in 1950s – during those days, the  important leader of the MNR, Víctor Paz Estenssoro, was president of Bolivia in 1952–56 and instituted the revolutionary part of the party’s program. In 1956 he was replaced by the more conservative Hernando (Hernán) Siles Zuazo, whose primary concern was to stop inflation, which had completed the revolutionary process by virtually destroying the older middle-class supporters of the MNR. Siles initiated an economic program, with massive financial support from the United States, that brought inflation under control; at the same time, he also suspended most of the advanced social programs of the revolution. The government ended worker co-administration of the nationalized mine companies and cut back on social services. It also invited North American petroleum companies back into Bolivia for the first time since 1937, when Standard Oil of Bolivia had been confiscated by the Toro government.

Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia, the capital of the Chuquisaca Department and the 6th most populated city in Bolivia. Located in the south-central part of the country, Sucre lies at an elevation of 2,810 meters (9,214 feet). This relatively high altitude gives the city a subtropical highland climate with cool temperatures year-round. Its pre-Columbian name was Chuquisaca; during the Spanish Empire it was called La Plata. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the city of Chuquisaca had its own autonomy with respect to the Inca Empire.  La Paz   officially known as Nuestra Señora de La Paz (Our Lady of Peace), and also Chuqi Yapu in Aymara, is the seat of government as well as the legislative and executive capital of the Plurinational State of Bolivia.   La Paz is the third-most populous city in Bolivia.

Bolivia, is  located in western-central South America. The seat of government and executive capital is La Paz, while the constitutional capital is Sucre.  The sovereign state of Bolivia is a constitutionally unitary state, divided into nine departments. Its geography varies from the peaks of the Andes in the West, to the Eastern Lowlands, situated within the Amazon basin. It is bordered by Brazil,   Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru.   It is one of the  landlocked countries in the Americas.

It is all about the rise and fall of - Jeanine Arez.  Having secured the presidency, Áñez, together with other opposition legislators and civic leaders, including Camacho and Marco Pumari, made their way to the Palacio Quemado, the president's former residence prior to the construction of the Casa Grande del Pueblo in 2018. Greeting a crowd of supporters, Áñez emerged onto the balcony dressed in the traditional presidential regalia, including the sash and historic presidential medal. Flanked by her two children on either side, as well as senators and civic leaders, she delivered a short speech pledging to "restore democracy to the country": "I am going to work this short time because Bolivians deserve to live in freedom, they deserve to live in democracy, and never again will their vote be stolen", she said. Notably, Áñez, a Catholic, also brandished a small pink Bible, declaring that "God has allowed the Bible to enter the Palace again". Before Morales' presidency, and until 2009, Bolivia was not a secular state, and the former president's relationship with the Church was controversial. At age fifty-two, Áñez was Bolivia's sixty-sixth president and is the second woman to have ever held the post, after Lidia Gueiler, who herself was a transitional president between 1979 and 1980.

It is not about any governance but crime !  -  a  Bolivian court has sentenced former Bolivian President Jeanine Arez to 10 years in prison for an alleged plot to topple her rival Evo Morales in 2019.

Jeanine Áñez Chávez   is a Bolivian lawyer, politician, and television presenter who served as the 66th president of Bolivia from 2019 to 2020. A former member of the Social Democratic Movement, she previously served two terms as senator for Beni from 2015 to 2019 on behalf of the Democratic Unity coalition and from 2010 to 2014 on behalf of the National Convergence alliance. During this time, she served as second vice president of the Senate from 2015 to 2016 and in 2019 and, briefly, was president of the Senate, also in 2019.  Born in San Joaquín, Beni, Áñez graduated as a lawyer from the José Ballivián Autonomous University before working in the field of television journalism.

In the midst of this political crisis, and after the resignation of President Evo Morales and other officials in the line of succession, Áñez declared herself next in line to assume the presidency. On 12 November 2019, she installed an extraordinary session of the Plurinational Legislative Assembly that lacked quorum due to the absence of members of Morales's party, the Movement for Socialism (MAS-IPSP), who demanded security guarantees before attending. In a short session, Áñez declared herself president of the Senate, then used that position as a basis to assume constitutional succession to the presidency of the country. Her transitional government focused on pacifying the country, calling for new elections, and, later, combating the COVID-19 pandemic. Responding to domestic unrest, Áñez issued a decree removing criminal liability for military and police in dealing with protesters, which was repealed amid widespread condemnation following the Senkata and Sacaba massacres. Her government launched numerous criminal investigations into former MAS officials, for which it was accused of political persecution and retributive justice, terminated Bolivia's close links with the socialist governments of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, and warmed relations with the United States.

Following the end of her mandate in November 2020, Áñez briefly retired to her residence in Trinidad, only to launch her Beni gubernatorial candidacy a month later. Despite being initially competitive, mounting judicial processes surrounding her time as president hampered her campaign, ultimately resulting in a third-place finish at the polls. Eight days after the election, Áñez was apprehended and placed in preventive detention on charges related to her role in the alleged coup d'état carried out in 2019; a move decried as political persecution by members of the opposition. Áñez's extended incarceration at the Miraflores Women's Penitentiary caused a marked decline in her physical and mental health, and was denounced as abusive by her family. On 10 June 2022, after nearly fifteen months in pre-trial detention, the First Sentencing Court of La Paz found Áñez guilty of breach of duties and resolutions contrary to the Constitution, sentencing her to ten years in prison.

So now the woman stands convicted of  crimes "contrary to the constitution and a dereliction of duties." and also  sentenced to 10 years were former Chief of General Staff Williams Kaliman and ex-police chief Yuri Calderon.

SYMA seeks your financial support for Education programmes - Tuition centre and Uniform 2022

Corona (from the Latin for 'crown') most commonly refers to: Stellar corona, the outer atmosphere of the Sun or another star.  A corona is the outermost layer of a star's atmosphere. They are made up of plasma. The Sun's corona lies above the chromosphere and extends millions of kilometres into outer space.  BUT human beings living in this Globe now remember Corona only as Covid 19 that impacted the World shutting down, hurting them physically, economically and in many ways.

No post on Corona but our little attempt in Educational support -   Please do read this – together we will change the way some students attend school. In Tamil Nadu, after almost 2 years – Schools have reopened  for Classes I to X students on June 13 after summer vacation;  for Class XII on June 20 and for Class XI, classes will begin on June 27, 2o22.  Students will perhaps be happy in attending classes physically wearing fresh and new uniform.

Srinivas Youngmen’s Association (popularly SYMA)  has been doing service to the society ever since 1977.  Our  services engulf  various lines such as civic welfare, medicine, health, environment, education, personality development more.  The medical services and laboratory which remained closed during Covid 19 are open to public now.  We at SYMA, feel strongly the primary responsibility of improving the Society and helping the underprivileged.

1) Medical Centre and Laboratory run for the poor wherein free consultation and medicines are provided – popularly known as ரெண்டு ரூவா மருத்துவமனை  [Rs. 2 hospital !]   We also have a Medical lab wherein blood and other tests are done at very nominal costs.

2) SYMA Growth – a purposeful special tuition centre for coaching poor students of 10th and 12th standards.  Into its 15th  year now, this was inaugurated in  2008 and producing good results year after year, changing the lives of poor children.  The academic year 2020-21 was impacted by Covid and this year are planning to start by first week of July 2022.

Education is the only thing that can change the lives of children coming from lower echelons of society.  We firmly believe that only quality education can improve them and ensure their moving to a higher echelon.  For making students attend schools with dignity, we have been providing uniforms for more than 2 decades now.  This year we plan to provide 1200  sets of unstitched uniforms to poor students.  Schools and students have been identified and the process is already on.   A set of uniform would cost Rs.1000/- approx..  We seek your support for a few sets from your side.

Our Tuition Centre SYMA Growth – runs at an annual expenditure of Rs.8 lakhs approx. and this year, we have plans of extending ie., have 3 classes for X Standard – and coach them continuously in their 11th and 12th standards too. This way the expenditure would be much more than yesteryears.

Generally, we collect funds in the months of  July & ahead coinciding with our Educational Aid Programme, though donations are welcome throughout the year. You have patronized us in a big way in the past, and we look forward to receiving your donations this year too. Cheques are to be drawn in the name of  ‘SRINIVAS YOUNGMENS ASSOCIATION’  (or simply SYMA)– payable at Chennai. India's hidden martyrs !! - ever heard of Pannalal ?!?!?

Nation is proudly celebrating ‘ Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ – 75 glorious years of Indian freedom ..  often described in a terse statement, India achieved freedom ‘without battle or shedding blood’ – Indian freedom struggle was far different perhaps – thousands sacrificed and more number underwent innumerable difficulties for that magic freedom, which we happily enjoy .. .. .. and, Indian History does not have much written about those great martyrs.  This morning heard in AIR about a martyr ‘Pannalal’ – sadly, there is precious little info. on someone who gave up life for the Nation.  I heard in that radio broadcast  that this martyr at his prime youth was banished and died at Andaman Cellular jail – removed from his family.

The First war of Indian Independence (there had been a few uprisings earlier – aptly this may not be the first, but of a much bigger magnitude rebellion) against the invaders, who came as Traders (British East India Co)  and ruled the Nation for centuries on behalf of British Crown.  We were fed a distorted history in our schools and colleges  -  ‘the uprising of 1857’ not as a National movement, not as a freedom struggle but as sepoy mutiny, only an uprising by a group of soldiers.  .. .. and Gandhiji  [Nehruji and Congressmen] got us freedom without spilling blood !! ~ British were so kind and noble that they gave freedom on a platter

After gleaning many, found some info that Shri Pannalal was born in Raipur.  He was aroused and drawn to National sentiments by the speech that Hanuman Singh, Magazine Lashkar in the British Army (who assassinated Major Cidwel at his residence on 18 January 1858) delivered before a sepoy audience.  Immediately, Pannalal joined the rebel soldiers in Raipur; involved in the killing of British army officers; with 16 other rebel soldiers, he was arrested by the British; tried, convicted and sentenced to death; hanged in Raipur on 22 January 1858. [Parliamentary Papers ñ reg. Mutiny further Papers, No.4, 1857-58, NAI, CKI, 1740-1947, p.171]

The radio report stated that he was banished to Andaman cellular jail which even today bears evidence to the cruelty of the British Empire towards those who fought against – far far away from the clemency image or the kindness shown to some leaders who were either kept in house-arrest or kept as political prisoners in Allahabad and elsewhere with all facilities. Cellular jail was the hub of inhuman punishments and cruelties of British wardens and jailers. The jail guards the real, painful, and sad stories of British rule and India’s journey to independence.

The reason for building the jail in Andaman &Nicobar islands was strategic in many ways firstly, it would isolate the prisoners from the world, secondly, the place was away from mainland India so prisoners would not be able to contact their friends or family, and lastly, they could not even escape from the island as it was surrounded by ocean from all sides.  The prisoners were chained, isolated, whipped and were subjected to most inhumane treatment – yet we hail the British, forgetting all those who fought and underwent such horrorfilled treatment.

For sure there had been many many more Pannalals !!  - of whom we never read in our school books.  There was MagnizeLaskar Hanuman Singh revolt – a Laskarin  Raipur battalion  who was known as Mangal Pandey of Chhattisgarh. Chhattisgarh took active part in the Revolt of 1857. At Chattisgarh, the revolt was  spearheadedVirNarain Singh who was a benevolent jamindar of Sonakhan. The British arrested him in 1856 for looting a trader’s grain stocks and distributing it amongst the poor in a severe famine year. In 1857 with the help of the solders of the British Army at Raipur, VirNarain Singh escaped form prison. He reached Sonakhan and formed an army of 500 men. Under the leadership of Smith, a powerful British army was dispatched to crush the Sonakhan army. The British succeeded after a prolonged battle and VirNarain Singh was arrested and later hanged on the 10th December, 1857. He became the first martyr from Chhattisgarh in the War of Independence.

Though he died, his death made people revolt – the  Third Regular Regiment of British Army was stationed at Raipur where Hanuman Singh was working as Magazine Lashkar. He was only 35 years old. Hanuman singh aided by two friends killed his   military officer- Sergeant Major Sidwell on 18 January, 1858. 17 sepoys accompanied him to ammunition depot.   British Army led by Lieutenant Smith surrounded them; Singh could escape but rest were arrested and were   were hanged in front of the  army on 22 January 1858.

These are the real life incidents that Nation must be reading in School books etched in its History – every time I get to read these, I cry .. .. my heart goes out to those martyrs who made our present day life possible.  Salutes to them and fie upon all those who hid those great sacrifices and portrayed themselves without doing much.
