Today at Hyderabad is the 6th of  2023, ICC Cricket World Cup.  Batting first New Zealand amassed 322/7 against Netherlands  and won the match easily by 99 runs !   Today a 35 year old - Sybrand Abraham Engelbrecht made his debut making 29 runs.   He was born in  Johannesburg, Transvaal and holds   MBA degree from the University of Stellenbosch Business School.

Holland is a region and former province in the western part of the Netherlands. The term Holland is  frequently used to refer the  Netherlands.  Amsterdam is the largest city and the capital of the Netherlands.  Netherlands,  informally Holland,  is a country in Western Europe along the North Sea coast. In Europe, it consists of 12 provinces that border Germany, Belgium, North Sea and United Kingdom.  Together with the Caribbean Netherlands, consisting of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba, it forms a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The country's official language is Dutch.

Playing his first international match for Netherlands, 35-year-old South Africa-born Sybrand Engelbrecht dropped a sitter to hand a massive reprieve to New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell during today’s match  - wonder why that makes a post !

With New Zealand just two-down and over 18 overs left to be bowled, Mitchell had been given a second chance in the 32nd over. Trying to flick a fuller delivery, all Mitchell did was clip the ball towards the left of Engelbrecht at short mid-wicket. Even though Engelbrecht was quick with his movements, he couldn’t catch hold of the ball which he would’ve grabbed comfortably more often than not. Batting on 22* at the time, Mitchell got out after scoring 48.

Engelbrecht had moved to Netherlands in 2017 after playing nine years of cricket in South Africa. He recently became eligible to play for his new side. Originally a spinner, Engelbrecht’s bowling action was found illegal in December 2015 while playing for the Cape Cobras. In the meantime, he played as a specialist batter for them. The action finally got cleared in 2016. Surprisingly, the game against New Zealand is Engelbrecht’s first professional match since 2016. Interestingly, he is also the only uncapped player participating in this World Cup.

-         If you wonder the relevance of reference to the U19 WC finals of 2008 – with  rain reducing the Under-19 World Cup final to a battle of nerves, the Indian bowlers held theirs better than did the South African batsmen to win by a dozen runs.  Set 99 to chase off 98 balls after the rain break, South Africa never got going and collapsed 13 runs short.

Bowled out for 159 following a stifling performance by South Africa's bowlers and fielders, India responded by blowing the South African top order away before rain intervened.   In that match Engelbrecht excelled with his fielding.  His brilliant catching  allowed South Africa to take two crucial wickets.   The  first one to be dismissed due to the fielder’s mastery was none other than Virat Kohli.  Engelbrecht, who was fielding at backward point, timed his dived to perfection to grab the ball out of thin air. A few overs later, Engelbrecht again took a brilliant catch to send Tanmay Srivastava back to the pavilion. Srivastava, who tried to slice the ball towards backward point, witnessed an airborne Engelbrecht grabbing another sensational catch.
