National dress round at Miss Universe 2021 !!

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, also known as "The Guitar Hotel", in Florida is drawing global attention .. .. .. and you too may follow the much touted ‘Beauty contest’ wherein you can get know the answer to a great Q of the year too.

Miss Universe is an annual international beauty pageant that is run by the United States–based Miss Universe Organization. It is one of the most watched pageants in the world with an estimated audience of over 500 million viewers in over 190 territories. The Miss Universe Organization and its brand are currently owned by the WME/IMG talent agency. The  pageant's advocacy is "humanitarian issues and is a voice to affect positive change in the world." The current Miss Universe is Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa who was crowned by Catriona Gray of the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2019 pageant .

The title "Miss Universe" was first used by the International Pageant of Pulchritude in 1926. This contest was held annually until 1935, when the Great Depression and other events preceding World War II led to its demise. The current Miss Universe pageant was founded in 1952 by Pacific Knitting Mills, a California-based clothing company and manufacturer of Catalina Swimwear. The company was the sponsor of the Miss America pageant until 1951, when the winner, Yolande Betbeze, refused to pose for publicity pictures wearing one of their swimsuits. In 1952, Pacific Knitting Mills organized the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, co-sponsoring them for decades to follow.

It is not mere beauty contest – brainy too !!  The Miss Universe question and answer round is one of the most anticipated segments of the beauty pageant !. In this round, the judges and the audience judge the delegates based on their quick and  intelligent thinking. The top 5 contestants are given a question and expected to come up with a thoughtful response in just mere seconds.  .. .. last time the  top 3 contestants answered  the question: ‘What is the most important thing we should teach young girls today?’

Miss Universe 2019 took place on December 9, 2019  with the contestants from Mexico, South Africa, and Puerto Rico landing in the top 3. South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi was eventually crowned Miss Universe 2019 – which was no surprise considering her how she answered each question thrown at her throughout the night  !!  As part of the competition, the contestants not only had to answer individual questions about political issues such as climate change, privacy and reproductive health, but also give their take on a single question: “what is the most important thing we should teach young girls today?”

Here are their answers:

Sofia Aragon, Mexico  :  it’s very important to teach young girls today the importance of their true value. We see so many perfection in social media, perfect lives, perfect bodies, perfect faces, perfect relationships. Nothing is that real. We have to teach them that who they are is already amazing, who they are is already worth it, because what they really are is not what it looks like, it’s what they feel, what they act, and the way they react to the world. I believe a girl is worth what she has to offer to the world, way more than the way she looks. Thank you.

Zozibini Tunzi, South Africa:  I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time, not because we don’t want to but because of what society has labelled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings in the world and that we should be given every opportunity and that is what we should be teaching these young girls, to take up space, nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself, thank you.

Madison Anderson, Puerto Rico : There’s so many things that I would love to teach young girls if I have the opportunity to be the next Miss Universe, such as in a world where so many people wear masks, it’s such a beautiful thing to see an authentic soul, to embrace your uniqueness, to embrace who you are. You just don’t know who you can inspire just by being you, so celebrate that. Thank you.

After holding off on last year’s show due to the pandemic, the annual Miss Universe pageant is back this weekend, with competitors from across the globe vying for the crown. This year, hosts Mario Lopez and previous Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo will lead viewers through the whole show. The 2021 Miss Universe marks the pageant’s 69-year anniversary. The competition will be held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida and will feature a performance by Pitbull.

Adline Mewis Quadros Castelino, an Indian model and beauty pageant titleholder, was  crowned as Miss Diva Universe 2020 and is representing  India at the Miss Universe 2020 pageant.

By late 2002, Trump entered into a joint venture with NBC, which in 2003 outbid the other markets for the TV rights. In June 2015, NBC cancelled all business relationships with Trump and the Miss Universe Organization in response to controversial statements about illegal immigrants who crossed the border from Mexico. Miss Universe 2021 contestants made a fashion and political statement during the 'national dress' round of the 69th annual beauty competition on Friday morning.  Lola de los Santos Biccò, the official representative for Uruguay, appeared on stage  donning a multi-coloured ensemble with a powerful message which read: 'No more hate, violence, rejection, discrimination.' Among the others calling for their message to be heard was Miss Myanmar, Thuzar Wint Lwin, who held up a sign which urged for 'prayers' for her country. The Asian nation has been embroiled in unrest since the military carried out a putsch on February 1, disputing the results of an election that resulted in a pro-democracy party winning power. Miss Singapore Bernadette Belle Ong decided to include her powerful message into her actual costume and decided to shine a spotlight on the #StopAsianHate movement through a sequinned bodysuit which included a hashtag on a white and red cape.

Here are some colourful display of the participants – to me, it appeared the dresses children would don in ‘Fancy dress competitions’ locally.   Some of the photos taken from MailOnline. Here are the photos of
