The first legislative council election to Madras Presidency after the establishment of dyarchical system of government was held in Nov 1920. Indian National Congress boycotted the election due to its participation in the Non-cooperation movement. A. Subbarayalu Reddiar became the first Chief Minister of the presidency.  Wiki reports that at  first, Governor Willington invited the wealthy P. Theagaroya Chetty, the leader of the justice party to form the government. He refused the offer as he did not like to be paid a salary from people's taxes. He recommended that A. Subbarayalu Reddiar, Ramarayaningar (Raja of Panagal) and Kurma Venkata Reddy Naidu, all Telugu members, be made ministers. Reddiar was appointed as the Chief Minister and as the minister in charge of Education, Public works, Excise & Registration. Ramarayaningar became the minister of local self-government & Public health, while Venkata Reddy Naidu was given the Development portfolio.

Those days, the  Madras Presidency, headquartered in Fort St. George, India, was a province of British India that comprised present day Tamil Nadu, the Malabar region of North Kerala, the coastal and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh, and the Bellary, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi districts of Karnataka.   Just before Indian independence in Apr 1946, Tanguturi Prakasam became the CM representing INC in Madras Legislative Assembly.  At the time of Independence – from 23.3.1947 till 6.4.1949, it was OP Ramaswamy Reddiyar ~ then PS Kumaraswamy Raja took over.

Madras State was renamed as Tamil Nadu (Tamil for Tamil country) on 14 January 1969. The legislative assembly adopted a resolution on 14 May 1986, to abolish the legislative council. The state legislature is unicameral, and consists of 235 members including one nominated member.  The chief minister commands most of the executive powers while the governor has a largely ceremonial role. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu,  is elected by legislators of the political party or the coalition which commands a simple majority in the legislative assembly.

The Chief Ministers of Madras State were - P. S. Kumaraswamy Raja; Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari;  K Kamaraj;  M  Bakthavatsalam      & CN Annadurai.  After renaming as Tamil Nadu, Chief Ministers, including some for interim periods have been :  Annadurai;          VR Nedunchezhiyan, M Karunanidhi, MG Ramachandran, Mrs Janaki Ramachandran, Ms J Jayalalithaa, O Panneerselvam  & now Edappadi K. Palaniswami

In addition, he won the Lok Sabha seat from Tiruchengode constituency in 1998.  Edappadi is a town and a municipality in Salem district.  in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.
