Senate House, University of Madras —
Illuminated view of a glorious landmark
A view of the
beautifully illuminated Senate House of the University of Madras, with the
background enhanced to a deep blue and the criss-crossing wires removed!
Situated on Kamarajar
Salai, popularly known as Beach Road, at Chepauk, Chennai, the University of
Madras is one of India's oldest universities, established in 1857.
The Senate House,
designed by the renowned architect Robert Chisholm and constructed between 1874
and 1879, is an outstanding example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Its ornate
domes, intricate decorative work and colourful stained-glass windows make it a
remarkable architectural landmark.
The building has also
played an important role in the city's political history. In 1937, the
legislature of the Madras Presidency met at the Senate House, adding another
significant chapter to its distinguished past.
