Narayan Jagadeesan misses triple century - TN surpasses 500 in 50 over Cricket !!

Today Narayan Jagadeesan stands taller in that elite list above Alistair Brown; Rohit Sharm and D Arcy Short !!

The Chutiya Kingdom  (1187-1673),   was established by one of the Chutiya chieftains named Birpal in 1187 CE in the areas comprising the present-day Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.  It was the largest kingdom in Assam after the fall of Kamrupa and before the rise of Ahom kingdom. The kingdom absorbed the ancient Pala dynasty of Kamarupa and reigned for over 400 years in eastern Assam and Arunachal Pradesh with its capital at Sadiya and Ratnapur.

Popularly known as ‘Land of the Dawn-lit-Mountains’, Arunachal Pradesh is India’s remotest state and the first Indian soil to greet the rising sun. Located on the northeastern tip of India with its borders touching China, Bhutan and Burma (Myanmar), this beautiful land is endowed with dazzling array of flora and fauna that is sure to allure any tourist Arunachal Pradesh finds its mention in the literature of Kalika Purana and the great Hindu Epic Mahabharata. According to a Hindu literature, Arunachal Pradesh was the place where sage Parshurama found solace. Here, King Bhishmaka founded his kingdom and Lord Krishna married his consort Rukmani. Ruled by many powerful dynasties and kingdoms, Arunachal Pradesh India is dotted with innumerable historical monuments and archeological remains, which bear testimony to its rich cultural heritage.

NJ born in Dec 1995 is only 26 years now and is a good wicket-keeper taking Tamil Nadu to newer heights these days.   We have heard of Richard Hadlee / Richard Collinge / Chatfield; Thomson & Lillee; Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Collin Craft, Joel Garner;  Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis -  please don’t comment on the bowling attack of : Yab Niyar, Nabam Abo, LImar Dabi,  Mapu Yigam, Chetan Anand, Techi Neri, Madan Paul, TEchi Doria !!  - but by any standards – the knock of Narayan Jagadeesan is truly World class.

T20 is all about tonking the ball  - it is a batters game – sixers and fours are hit .. no score less than 200 is safe these days and so on ..  In the din of IPL – most domestic Cricket would be forgotten – gone are the days when Triplicanites used to follow Palayampatti Shield… after the Pongal Tests of Chepauk ….. ODI treat came years later to Chennai – in between the limited overs tourney most enjoyed was Deodhar Trophy held since 1973 – the 50 over match between Zones… Remember in 1980-81 Deodhar match at Chepauk, Thirumalai Echampadi Srinivasan shred to pieces West bowling scoring a masterly 129 outclassing Krish Srikkanth, and eventually getting selected for that tour of Australia – Newzealand… that was an innings of class written all over. Then there was the KS Subbaiah Pillai trophy – the One day tournament between State sides.   Today it is Vijay Hazare Trophy  match !

Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Ranji One-Day Trophy, was started in 2002–03 as a limited-overs cricket domestic competition involving state teams from the Ranji Trophy plates is now on. It is named after the famous Indian cricketer Vijay Hazare.   Vijay Hazare  captained India in 14 matches between 1951 and 1953. In India's 25th Test match, nearly 20 years after India achieved Test status, he led India to its first ever Test cricket win in 1951–52 against England at Madras, winning by an innings and eight runs in a match that began on the day that King George VI died.

Back in June 2022, England amassed 498/4 in a 50 over match built on Buttler's brutal 162 not out and further centuries from Dawid Malan and Phil Salt before Liam Livingstone smashed 66 from just 22 balls, left Netherlands facing an implausible target after winning the toss on an exceptional surface.  Netherlands lost by 232 runs.

Today in a Vizay Hazare match at Bengaluru, TN outwitted all that was previously recorded amassing 500+ runs – an innings of 154 in just 102 balls with 19 fours and 2 sixers was dwarfed by the brilliance of 277 off 141 balls with 15 sixers and 24 boundaries !!  . .. .. that was Narayan Jagadeesan blitz against hapless Arunachal Pradesh at Chinnaswamy stadium – the highest individual score in Mens list A cricket overtaking 268 by Alistair Brown for Surrey against Glamorgan in 2002 – incidentally the second highest is a woman – Sripali Weerakkod in 2007 Lankan Women’s ODI tournament.

Jagadeesan has now scored 5 consecutive centuries surpassing Kumara Sangakkara, Alviro Petersen and Devdutt Padikkal.   The team total of 506/2 by Tamil Nadu becomes the first 500+ score in Men’s List A Cricket, surpassing 498/4 by England.

Hats off – Narayan Jegadeesan – wishing you reach greater heights !

With regards – S. Sampathkumar
