It is around 10 pm IST – and most Indians are glued on to
the action at Dubai – the finals of ICC T20WC .. .. in 1985, in Victoria Cup –
when the finals was between India and Pakistan (India won with Krish Srikkanth
blitz providing the perfect platform) – a banner in bad taste screamed ‘Truck
drivers Vs Tram conductors’ – unlike such slur, we Cricket fans are enjoying
the battle between Kiwis and Kangaroos – perhaps many of us supporting New
Zealand to win.
The toss was lost and
Kiwis were put in – slowest start in powerplay and - cricket.com.au – tweeted :

that one hand hoist to Rishab Pant’s ! ‘Big boys play at night’ screamed another banner sometime in a match - Kane Williamson could stake claims for that as
he is a big match player. He was
scratchy, was dropped at 21 by Josh Hazelwood off Starc but stepped up in the
all-important final and slammed 85 runs taking New Zealand to a daunting 172/4.
Though Aaron Finch is the
Captain, in someways it is a match between two affable guys - David Warner and
Kane Williamson, two senior players on opposing sides of the trans-Tasman
rivalry but close pals playing for the same team in IPL - SunRisers Hyderabad
(SRH). Warner
on Sunday responded to an SRH fan pointing out that their two
"captains" will be in opposing camps by saying that there will be no
losers among the two of them at the end of the game in Dubai. David Warner had
been the longtime captain of SRH, leading them to their only IPL title in 2016,
but was removed as captain with Williamson replacing.
Even before the toss, a
freakish incident handicapped NZ. In
July 2021 - Devon Conway is basking in glory at Lords after joining a long list
of 111 players – and there are 15 of them who have made it for India. ‘Century on debut’ – Conway has garnered more
glory. Devon Conway started playing in
South African domestic cricket. In August 2015, he was included in Gauteng's
for Africa T20 Cup. He played in all three matches for Gauteng, scoring 53
runs. Conway arrived in Wellington in
August 2017. He joined Victoria University Cricket Club in a dual capacity as
player and coach. Conway, the
29-year-old South African-born player, was
preferred to Tom Blundell or Will Young and opened the batting alongside Tom Latham at Lords and straightaway made an outstanding start to
his international career. After three ODIs, he was averaging 75 but started with a double ton in his debut
test.
Cricketers usually punch
the air in celebration after winning matches, Devon Conway did the opposite by
punching his bat in anger and the fit of rage has now kept him out of the T20
World Cup 2021 final as also the matches against India. New Zealand coach Gary Stead picked up Tim
Serfeit as his replacement. It looked a casual punch, but x-ray confirmed
Conway had broken a fifth metacarpal in his right hand after hitting his bat
out of frustration following his dismissal in his team's semifinal win against
England on Wednesday. "He's absolutely gutted to be ruled out like this at
this time," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said in a statement. Conway scored a crucial 46 runs as New
Zealand successfully chased down England's tally of 167 in the semifinal.
Today as we watched, NZ
showed no signs of urgency and was too complacent as Daryl Mitchell fell at 3.5
score at 28/1 – and after 11 overs they were only 76 with 9 wickts at
hand. It appeared too slow but Kane
Williamson’s splendid innings changed the complexion but the way Warner and
Marsh are playing – whether the score is good enough is being doubted.
