Superstar Rajnikanth gets Dadasaheb Phalke award .. ..

Rajnikanth, the man is in news ! ~ everyone is talking about .. being conferred with Dadasaheb Phalke Award – there are news, views, criticism and more – with reams getting written on this – in some way even pushing Elections to a side !

~ was a very popular song set to the music of Chandrabose.  Raja Chinna Roja directed by S. P. Muthuraman, produced by M. Saravanan and M. Balasubramaniam of AVM Productions was a Rajni hit of 1989. The plot revolves around Raja (Rajinikanth), who arrives in the city to become an actor. In the process he meets his childhood friend and is forced to take care of his nieces and nephews.  The film was commercially successful, and had a 175-day theatrical run.

Rajnikant starrer ‘Baba’  bombed at box office, actually it was good and I enjoyed seeing the movie.  His rise in the film would occur with the temple elephant placing the garland on the neck of unassuming Baba and the song ‘sakthi kodu’ was shot in and around the famous Kalikambal temple. Is the conferment of the award similar – are there political motives behind the award  .. .. Q can galore !

Before you proceed few Qs ?

·         Everyone of us buy agarbathies ~ this is also trademarked.  Before that a Q on a Rajnikant film… - Padayappa, was directed by KS Ravikumar; starred Soundarya & Ramya Krishnan with Rajini;  was the last film for Sivaji Ganesan. (Looks like all possible Questions over ?)…….. here is the Q :   - The producer Thenappan registered the ‘stylised Padayappa design’  as a Class 34 trademark in 1998 for some goods, making it to be first instance of brand extention in Tamil film industry ?  Can you tell what the brands were ?

·         Ever heard of a Dadasaheb Phalke award winner Paidi Jairaj – wiki describes him as rising from being a body-double !!

·         Can you identify who this highest paid actress of her time – Ruby Myers (her stage name and her ancestry !)

Introduced in 1969, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest award given to recognise the contributions of film personalities towards the development of Indian cinema and for distinguished contributions to the medium, its growth and promotion." A committee consisting five eminent personalities from Indian film industry was appointed to evaluate the lifetime achievement award, Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The jurors were : Asha Bhosle, Subhash Ghai, Mohanlal,  Shankar Mahadevan &  Biswajit Chatterjee (without doubt all acclaimed in tinseldom)

The award was instituted to honour the doyen of Indian Cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, the National Film Awards named the most prestigious and coveted award of Indian Cinema after him. He is the man who made the first Indian Feature film Raja Harishchandra in 1913. Popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke, he then went on to make 95 films and 26 short films in a span of 19 years. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was introduced in 1969 by the government to recognise the contribution of film personalities towards the development of Indian Cinema. The first recipient of this award was Devika Rani. Dadasaheb Phalke Award is given to a film personality for his/her outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. The award comprises of a Swarna Kamal, a cash Prize of Rs. 10,00,000/- (Rupees Ten Lakhs)certificate, silk scroll and a shawl.

The Centre on Thursday announced the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Rajinikanth for his contribution as an actor, producer and screenwriter. Announcing the decision in New Delhi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said, “For the past 50 years, Rajinikanth has been ruling the film industry. His work is like the sun. Through his talent and hard work, he has made a space for himself in the hearts of millions of people.” The award will be presented to Rajinikanth on May 3.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.  The first recipient of the award was actress Devika Rani, who was honoured at the 17th National Film Awards. As of 2021, there have been 51 awardees. Among those, actor Prithviraj Kapoor (1971) and actor Vinod Khanna (2017) were the  posthumous recipients.

Remember reading about this award when it was presented to LV  Prasad in 1982. Akkineni Lakshmi Vara Prasada Rao  was an eminent film producer, actor, director, cinematographer and businessman.  He founded Prasads Group in 1956, which include the Prasad Art Pictures, Prasad Studios, Prasads IMAX and L V Prasad Eye Institute.  Government of India released a Commemorative postage stamp in his memory in 2006. Prasad also had the unique distinction of acting in the first talkies of three different languages of Indian cinema; Alam Ara (Hindi), Bhakta Prahlada (Telugu) and Kalidas (a Telugu and Tamil bilingual movie).

In 1996, the award was conferred on Sivaji Ganesan described as an actor par excellence who acted in more than 300 films and was known for his expressions.  In 2010, film maker K Balachander was presented with this award.  Now the award for 2019 has been given to the man who debuted in  Apoorva Raagangal (1975),  fondly referred to as superstar.   He has acted in more than 160 films – in general, his films provide good entertainment, with his stunt and style loved by one and all.  He has portrayed dual roles in some and a comedy film Thillu Mullu; a triple role in Moondru Mugam.  For his 100th film he chose to act as Swami Raghavendrar (of whom he is a gret bakth and at that time not exactly suited for that fole).  He did one English movie too – Bloodstone !
