A majestic Indian
Coast Guard building and its reflection on the Thames of Chennai.
When the British established Fort St George in 1639, the
geography of Madras was very different from what we see today. Two waterways
were important to the settlement: North river / Elambore river &
Triplicane river.
The Cooum, (Triplicane river as it is known now) originates near Cooum/Kesavaram in Tiruvallur district, west of Chennai, and runs roughly 65–72 km before reaching the Bay of Bengal south of Fort St. George, below Napier Bridge Its urban course passes through areas including Arumbakkam, Choolaimedu, Chetpet, Egmore, and Chintadripet.
