Flower - Blossom! -

Are they really flowers in its real sense ! – they do not give aroma nor kept on the hair of women –  they are in fact  edible part of the tropical species of the tree (Musa acuminata). This cone-shaped flower has a dark red-orange or maroon hue and is consumable as curries, salads, cutlets, and soups.  The blossoms are  completely edible delicacy.  The flowers form deep within the stem of the  plant, long before they appear to us. The flowers occur in groups called hands, and the hands are arranged into larger clusters of flowers.

Wonder what !!   -   the literal translation would be ‘Banana flower’ – it is called Banana blossom, or  “banana heart”,  a fleshy, purple-skinned flower, shaped like a tear, which grows at the end of a banana fruit cluster.

Browsing something landed on a recipe page in a Foreign magazine – which read - Upton’s Naturals lightly cooks the blossoms in a brine of lime juice and sea salt. The company suggests the texture is like seafood, and offers recipes for frying them !!  - interested in knowing ?

Using flowers as a garnish is everybody’s choice – traditionally   , we’ve always used flowers in our dishes, not necessarily  as a garnish. India has consumed edible flowers for aeons - You are looking at a flower that gives  so much of health benefits.

Interesting !

Deer horn fight ! - Antlers !!!

Antlers !

Anbukku Naan Adimai  released in 1980 starring Rajnikanth, Vijayan, Sujatha, Rathi, Jayamalini, directed by R. Thyagarajan and produced under the Devar with the music of Illayaraja was a super hit.

Elsewhere in the financial market, the news causing more than ripples is that of Antler raising   $285 million in new fund for growth-stage startups.  The new fund, called Antler Elevate, would be managed from its offices in London, Singapore, and New York. M&G Catalyst, Schroders, Vaekstfonden, Korea Venture Investment Corp (KVIC), and a US pension fund are some of the investors in Antler's new fund.  Antler, is  a Netherlands-based venture capital (VC) firm that has added to the billions of dollars of undeployed VC capital as startups witness a prolonged funding winter.

Antler comes from the Old French antoillier from ant-, meaning before, oeil, meaning eye and -ier, a suffix indicating an action or state of being.

Physically, Antlers are like the beards on guys at hunting camp – they are secondary sexual characteristics that separate females and males but don’t directly contribute to reproduction.  Antlers are extensions of an animal's skull found in members of the Cervidae (deer) family. Antlers are a single structure composed of bone, cartilage, fibrous tissue, skin, nerves, and blood vessels. They are generally found only on males, with the exception of reindeer/caribou.

Deers have antlers, and cattle have horns but in contrast to antlers, horns—found on pronghorns and bovids, such as sheep, goats, bison and cattle—are two-part structures that usually do not shed. A horn's interior of bone is covered by an exterior sheath made of keratin. Antlers are unique to cervids. The ancestors of deer had tusks (long upper canine teeth). In most species, antlers appear to replace tusks.

Antlers are usually found only on males. Each antler grows from an attachment point on the skull called a pedicle. While an antler is growing, it is covered with highly vascular skin called velvet, which supplies oxygen and nutrients to the growing bone.

The antlers atop the heads of al different kinds of deer - including the reindeer that live way up north - have to be tough enough to face off with others. Deers fight territorially and for their harem with their strong antlers – and mankind too uses these antlers for fight

Have seen this ‘deer horn’ fight in some films especially MGR films.  Remember a scene in Anbukku Naan Adimai where the well trained Karathe Mani and a frail looking Rajni fight with each other.

Does this photo of antlers look impressive !!

what a beauty - young kannukutti

Pallu - dilscoop ....... ... and more !!

The beauty of the saree is determined by its ‘Pallu’  (the broad hem) – ask any Man, who accompanies his wife or sisters or – when buying a saree !!  - would you have observed many  ‘a good lookin model showing pallu in saree advts’ .. .. Tilakaratne Dilshan ?!?

Since the inception of Twenty20 cricket we’ve seen some outlandish additions to the shotmaker’s arsenal. Kevin Pietersen turned himself into a left-hander, Eoin Morgan turned himself inside out and MS Dhoni helicoptered himself off his feet – all calculated attempts to overcome the combination of ever-evolving bowling and stifling field placements.

In 2009, at the World T20 in England, Tillakaratne Dilshan added his name to the list of cricket’s out-of-the-box thinkers and in doing so defined a tournament, brought a unique shot to the world’s attention and added a new word to the cricketing lexicon.

As Watson trundled up to the wicket Dilshan shuffled across to a position outside his off-stump: unconventional maybe, but not yet groundbreaking. What followed was revolutionary, as he crouched down and positioned himself inside and under the ball before flaying it over the head of the Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.  The shot was infectious, a revelation, and it is now firmly part of the game. It may not have been invented by Dilshan.

Couple of years later in 2011 WC campaign, there were advertisements of Dilshan trying to drape sareee pallu over his shoulder again and again and thus mastering the dilscoop shot !!!

Sarees are evergreen and timeless. It’s enchanting  as each saree is different – experience of any man who had accompanied buying  saree - to see unstitched, seamless fabric turn into a gorgeous ensemble, each time a saree is draped. Pallu – the loose end of a saree – generally draped over shoulders – is integral in saree drape and design.

Here is my favourite chocolate Pigeon trying to show its pallu or its entire plumage
