fighting Pandemic ~ mere statistics may not offer solace !

Active numbers in Chennai city @ 6017 and at Teynampet containing Triplicane 330 – would that make people feel comfortable.  Statistics can be baffling !

Globally the total cases is 493,82,879/-  :  USA 98,30,895; India 84,62,080 & Brazil 56,31,181 .. .. but no. of death wise it is 236554 USA; 162015 Brazil and 125562 India. The cases per 1 million people is 29831 USA; 26646 Brazil and India 6220.

In a bid to bring awareness to people in Chennai regarding COVID-19 and the measures to be followed to stay safe, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will be holding COVID-19 awareness cultural programs from November 7 to January 3 across all the stations in Chennai. A group, Nimirvu Kalaiyagam will perform across the city’s metro stations to create awareness among passengers regarding the safety measures followed by CMRL to ensure safe commute for both the passengers and staff. The first cultural programme will be held today at Airport Metro station from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu recorded 2370 positive cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the state tally to 7,39,147. Among these, Chennai reported 612 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 2,03,685. Tamil Nadu recorded 27 deaths on Friday, putting the state toll at 11,299. Twenty five of them had succumbed due to comorbidities.

Moving slightly away from the declining trend, India recorded 50,356 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours.    There are now a total of 84,62,080 Covid cases in India where 1,25,562 people have lost their lives to the coronavirus disease since January 30, when the country reported its first COVID-19 case.

It is not the biggest or most populous State that has been the highest contributor. Delhi overtakes Kerala, Maha as highest contributor to new cases in 24 hours.  Delhi overtook Maharashtra and Kerala by reporting 7,178 COVID-19 cases in a span of 24 hours, becoming the largest contributor to the new 50,356 single day infections, according to Union Health Ministry on Saturday.  Seventy-seven percent of these new cases of COVID-19 are from 10 states and union territories -- - Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Kerala recorded 7,002 new cases followed by Maharashtra at 6,870 new cases on Friday, the ministry said.

Here is how States are stacked up statistically ! :

Four days after the election, the US presidential race hovered in suspended animation Saturday (7.11.2020)  as the long exacting work of counting votes brought Democrat Joe Biden ever closer to a victory over President Donald Trump. The delay in producing a verdict has been  attributed to high turnout a massive number of mail-in ballots and slim margins between the candidates. Biden held leads in battleground states of Pennsylvania, Nevada and Georgia, putting him in an ever-stronger position to capture the 270 Electoral College votes needed to take the White House. Trump is leading in North Carolina, a state that could give him 15 electoral votes, but needs to hold on to the three other states as well to win. .. .. it is still not over but worser as far as Covid figures are concerned.

The US reported a third straight daily record for new coronavirus cases on Friday, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 127,000 infections were reported in 24 hours, as well as 1,149 deaths.  The news comes as officials announced that White House chief of staff Mark Meadows had also tested positive for the virus.  The US is the worst affected nation in the world by Covid-19, with more than 9.7 million confirmed cases and a death toll of more than 230,000. It was not immediately clear how Mr Meadows - who has often appeared at public events without a face mask - was infected. According to the New York Times he first tested positive on Wednesday. Trump election campaign adviser Nick Trainer also has the virus, the paper said. Mr Meadows travelled with the president on the final days of campaigning and was at an election night party attended by dozens of Trump supporters at the White House.

The country's coronavirus outbreak was a key policy battleground in the run-up to the 3 November election, and contributed to a surge in postal and early in-person voting. In late October, Mr Meadows said in an interview with CNN that the US was "not going to control the pandemic", saying that Covid-19 could only be defeated by "mitigation areas" like vaccines and therapeutics. President Trump and his wife Melania and son Barron all contracted and recovered from Covid-19 - as did national security adviser Robert O'Brien, senior advisor Stephen Miller and White House counsellor Hope Hicks.

A recent study from the US Centers for Disease Control on the almost 100,000 coronavirus cases reported between 2 August and 5 September - around when college students began their return to school - found that weekly cases among those aged 18-22 increased by 55% nationally. The greatest increases came from the Northeast (which includes New York, Connecticut and New Jersey) and the Midwest, which is a region located west of the Northeast, including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. There have now been more than 130,000 cases identified at more than 1,300 American colleges, according to reporting from the New York Times.

Now if you are to read the 1st para again – it might offer you some false solace. Corona is yet to be conquered – so stay at home, don’t venture out unless essential.  Wear mask when you are out, keep social distancing ! use disinfectants / sanitisers  and wash your hands regularly.
