adventurous Toby's day out @ 109 ...

This post is about Toby escaping out of the backgate in Kent !!!

We have read about ‘great escapes’- not only of those escaping high security prisons – also of animals leaving their confined enclosures.  Some time back, the missing Tiger of Vandalur made news in Chennai; fear gripped the village in Vandalur and the residents, mostly daily wage labourers, spent sleepless nights.  In 2011, villagers were on alert after a python escaped from its enclosure at the zoo. The villagers also have to put up with monkeys and snakes in the surrounding wooded area.   A few years earlier, there was this marsh crocodile tapping the gate of a home.  Chennai is not alone, away Gurgaon forest department officials found the body of a 12- year-old leopard in Sehrawan village on NH-8 near Manesar.

There have been many cases of animals escaping zoos in foreign countries too; in June 2015, flash  flooding in the Georgian capital killed up to 12 people including three who work at the zoo.  Flooding destroyed enclosures at Tbilisi Zoo in Georgia allowing more than 30 dangerous animals to roam free - tigers, lions, jaguars, wolves, jackals and a hippo  escaped - residents of  Tbilisi  were warned to stay indoors; a mighty hippo was eventually cornered in the main square of Tbilisi and was subdued by being shot with a tranquiliser gun. Some were less fortunate and died on the roads !

Might surprise some – that tortoises do run races !! - Turtle racing is an event in which participants typically place turtles in the centre of a circle and watch them walk around until one of them crosses out of the circle ~ and some place bets on them too........ incidentally, the Usain Bolt of tortoises is - Bertie who covered 18ft in a world record 19.59 seconds.  There was another – a 150 pound tortoise given a chase by Police of Alhambara.

This post is about Toby escaping out of the backgate in Kent !!! - Toby was picked up by a driver on a nearby road and taken to a rescue centre… Six months later he was re-homed with a couple in Margate - 22 miles away

Toby, a tortoise was reunited with his owner after spending nearly a year on the run and even finding a new home - at the age of 109. Owner Wendy Stokes, 74, had given up hope of ever seeing Toby again after he escaped from her garden 11 months ago. …. ..piecing together his escapades over the last year, it looks like it  was  quite an adventure.

It is reported that he wandered through a gate in her garden and headed for the open road where he was picked up by a passing driver concerned for his safety and taken to a nearby animal rescue centre.Six months down,  he was re-homed with a couple living in Margate, Kent, 22 miles away from Wendy's farm in West Hougham. The couple, who could just about make out the word 'Stokes' written in white paint on his shell, felt they needed to find out who Tony belonged to. Though no. had been written, it had faded in course of time.

With nothing else to go on, they decided to call every Stokes in Kent listed in the phonebook.Eventually came across a delighted Wendy, who immediately arranged to collect him. She's had Toby since the 1980s when he was given to her by her late great aunt  ~and a happy ending to the story as Toby returned home, a full 11 months after his amazing, if a little slow, adventure.

Bhutan PM raises salaries of teachers, doctors and nurses .. ..

Just saw Rajnikant in ‘Kuselan’ ~ in the climax the hero Ashok Kumar (Rajni) speaks highly of School teachers and of classmates .. .. do you remember / recall the names of your elementary school teachers ? – when was the last time, you interacted with a teacher in a school ! .. .. and do you earn more than a teacher ??

The 12th year of our Education centre – SYMA Growth commenced with a pooja on 12.6.2019 – this centre provides quality educational support to under-privileged children [around 120 students of X & +2 at Triplicane].  This centre provides ample opportunity to be in the midst of students of economically backward and to talk to dedicated teaching staff at the centre.. ..

The subject matter of the post is a Prime Minister of our neighbouring country – a real multi-tasking master – not sure whether you would have identified this footballer or the surgeon at the operating table to be the present Prime Minister !

In the 18th century, the Bhutanese invaded and occupied the kingdom of Koch Bihar. In 1772, the Maharaja of Koch Bihar appealed to the British East India Company which assisted by ousting the Bhutanese and later in attacking Bhutan itself in 1774. A peace treaty was signed in which Bhutan agreed to retreat to its pre-1730 borders. However, the peace was tenuous, and border skirmishes with the British were to continue for the next hundred years. The skirmishes eventually led to the Duar War (1864–65), a confrontation for control of the Bengal Duars. After Bhutan lost the war, the Treaty of Sinchula was signed between British India and Bhutan. As part of the war reparations, the Duars were ceded to the United Kingdom in exchange for a rent of Rs. 50,000. The treaty ended all hostilities between British India and Bhutan.

Bhutan is a landlocked country, located in the Eastern Himalayas,  bordered by the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, Sikkim, Chumbi valleu, States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal.    Thimphu is its capital and largest city.  The independence of Bhutan has endured for centuries and it has never been colonized in its history. Situated on the ancient Silk Road between Tibet, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, the Bhutanese state developed a distinct national identity based on Buddhism. Headed by a spiritual leader known as the Zhabdrung Rinpoche, the territory was composed of many fiefdoms and governed as a Buddhist theocracy.  The country's landscape ranges from lush subtropical plains in the south to the sub-alpine Himalayan mountains in the north, where there are peaks in excess of 7,000 metres (23,000 ft). Gangkhar Puensum is the highest peak in Bhutan.

In South Asia, Bhutan ranks first in economic freedom, ease of doing business, and peace; and is the least corrupt country as of 2016. However, Bhutan continues to be a least developed country. Bhutan is also notable for pioneering the concept of gross national happiness.

Lotay Tshering , the current Prime Minister is unique, he is a Doctor, who spends his weekends at an operating table and tending to patients. Dr Lotay Tshering was one of Bhutan’s most highly regarded doctors before he entered politics and while his prime ministerial duties occupy him during the week, on weekends he returns to the hospital as a way to let off steam. “Some people play golf, some do archery, and I like to operate,” Tshering said as he tended to patients one Saturday morning at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck national referral hospital, describing his moonlighting medical work as a “de-stresser”.

After a first failed election attempt in 2013, Tshering was voted in as prime minister of Bhutan in November 2018. He is the third democratic leader since the country.   He is in news for good reasons !! .. .. .. In a move earning it praise, Bhutan has announced that salaries of teachers, doctors, nurses, and all medical staff will be hiked to make them the highest paid civil servants in the country, The Bhutanese reported. The cabinet decision was taken on June 5. Terming the announcement a “huge strategical move”, the news portal stated that the announcement has overturned the present hierarchy in which unofficial civil service administrators enjoyed various perks including training and trips.

Explaining the improved pay scale, the report states: “The numbers of teachers involved in the hike are huge as there are 8,679 teachers, followed by the medical staff who number around 4,000”. A press release issued by the Bhutanese Prime Minister’s Office stated: “If the pay revision comes through as proposed by the government, teaching becomes the highest paid profession in the country.” The reason for the pay revision, The Bhutanese reports, could be higher stress levels and longer working hours in both medical as well as teaching profession  In a revolutionary move, Education and Health have been given a top spot by the Bhutan Cabinet in a recent pay revision meeting.

As per the new salary hike, teachers with zero to 10 years of experience have been given a 35 per cent professional allowance, whereas a teacher with 10 to 20 years of experience has been given a 45 per cent allowance and 55 per cent has been given to teachers with experience above 20 years. In addition, as per a Bhutan Professional Standards, 10 per cent allowance is given to a proficient teacher, 15 per cent for an accomplished teacher and 20 per cent for a distinguished teacher, the report said. As far as medical staff are concerned, “MBBS doctors get a 45 per cent professional allowance while specialists get between 55 to 60 per cent. Nurses and clinical staff start at 35 per cent for 10 years and go to 45 per cent for above 10 to 20 years and then hit 55 per cent for above 20 years.”

Really laudable attempt ~  respect thy teachers.

Indian batsmen crawled ~ die-hard Indian fan cried !!

We have seen bigger losses ~ England was simply brilliant, that catch of Chris Woakes dismissing Pant was exceptional – they fielded brilliantly, bowled to plan, and had runs on the board – a clinical decimation of team India.  India still have nothing to fear – just the first loss – sure would sail to Semis and can take it further on – but when Kedar Jadhav celebrated that boundary, it was too irritating – what hurt was not the loss, but the way the team crawled, the intent was clearly missing,.  As India crawled, the die-hard Indian fan cried ..

Edgbaston Cricket Ground,  home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club is in Birmingham. Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands of England. By 1791 it was being hailed as "the first manufacturing town in the world".  The modern Birmingham is a major international commercial centre, It possesses three universities and two university colleges make it the largest centre of higher education in the United Kingdom outside London.  Edgbaston traditionally has a reputation for being one of the most highend, upmarket and/or affluent parts of Birmingham.  Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of the 18 major county clubs which make up the English and Welsh domestic cricket structure; its home is Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
This is a historic ground in existence for over a century.  Edgbaston's first test match was the first in the The Ashes series against Australia in 1902.   The scorecard reads : England 337 for 7 (Bairstow 111, Stokes 79, Roy 66, Shami 5-69) beat India306 (Rohit 102, Kohli 66, Plunkett 3-55) by 31 runs  ~ clearly 31 was not the margin, Indians were beaten squarely by a longer measure.

Jason Roy was back, despite not being fully fit and that made a huge difference. Jonny Bairstow was back to his monster-hitting mode. Liam Plunkett was back in the XI in a tactical swap, replacing Moeen Ali, and took out Virat Kohli in a chase of 338. 'New' England got their wobbling World Cup campaign back on track at Edgbaston, outbatting and outbowling India, clad in new, orange-and-dark-blue jerseys.  If England can follow up their 31-run victory on Sunday with another win against New Zealand on Wednesday, they will make the semi-finals, irrespective of the other results.
Chris Woakes great catch dismissing Rishab Pant

We have seen and heard it all ~ Rohit Sharma oozed class and alongwith Kohli blossomed a fine partnership. Could not but imagine the blame Sachine would have had – whenever India lost, social media would erupt stating that ‘when Sachin scores a ton, India loses; he played for records and more’ – not to defame Rohit, though he ended on losing side, his effort was valiant .. .. and we would hear so many voices drowning Dhoni, blaming him for the loss. Some would call for head, advocate Dinesh Karthik or question how Rishab Pant, who was not part of the squad came into playing X1.

Sadly, towards the end, MS Dhoni struggled to find the boundary, as did Kedar Jadhav, and they even drew boos from the crowd. They gulped seven dots and took 20 singles in the 31 balls they were there together. Dhoni made 42 off 31 while Kedar had 12 off 13 in a bizarre passage of play as India managed only 306 despite five wickets in the shed. But the rot had set in at the start itself. Chasing a total as steep as 338, India made just 28 runs in the first Powerplay. Then in the final five overs of the innings MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav managed to hit just three fours and a six while picking up 20 singles and playing out six dots. It might be difficult to prove that India lost the match in these two crucial segments of play, but what can be definitively said is India lacked intent upfront and at the death – and that hurts !!

Indian openers, especially Rohit Sharma, believe in following the routine of settling down without taking any undue risk. However, 28 for 1 is the slowest start in the World Cup after the first Powerplay. Partly that pressure was built after KL Rahul rushed into a premeditated shot - a flick - off a straight delivery from Chris Woakes, who took a lovely return catch. This after Woakes had bowled a maiden to Rahul in the first over of the innings. In fact, it was India that were in agony. Woakes bowled three consecutive maidens. The England fast bowlers were highly disciplined as they kept mixing up the deliveries on a pitch that was flat, but slow.

Virat Kohli has questioned Edgbaston's short, 59-metre boundary where England openers picked off a substantial percentage of runs against the Indian bowlers. Although Kohli did not blame the shorter boundary for India's first defeat of the World Cup, he did raise an eyebrow over the dimensions on one side, which he called "bizarre" and "crazy" on a pitch that was flat, and slow. The shorter boundary was a bother for India. On Saturday, as soon India arrived at the ground, the coaching staff comprising Ravi Shastri, Sanjay Bangar and Bharat Arun were seen having word with the head groundsman. As the host of the tournament, the guidelines for pitch and ground conditions are set by the ICC.  But that was a physical measurement and what were the Chief Selector doing – in picking  two wrist spinners in their first XI this World Cup in Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. Perhaps a team of Ravindra Jadeja in place of Kuldeep and Bhuvi in place of Jadhav  could have made difference ..

It’s rare for a bowler to draw the ‘ooh’s and ‘aah’s when the batting team goes hammer and tongs. Even rarer to bowl 30 dot balls in a 10-over spell when the batting team makes 337. And in such a total, how often does one concede 27 in five overs when the other five in the last 10 go for 65?   There is nothing exceptional about figures of 10-1-44-1. But in bowling those overs, Jasprit Bumrah made jaws drop for the way he made batsmen struggle to put bat on ball on a day when willow dominated leather.  “Bumrah was outstanding in the end,” wrote VVS Laxman. “Outstanding spell. World No 1 for a reason,” read one from Yuvraj Singh. “The best death bowler India has ever produced?” asked Aakash Chopra. There were many not so famous names, posting words of appreciation. It was all that and more. In the five overs he bowled in the last 10, when England had wickets in hand and Ben Stokes was making a mess of Mohammed Shami’s economy rate, Bumrah bowled three dot balls in each of over numbers 43, 46 and 50. One more could have been added to the last one had the batsmen not run a bye. There was one four against him in this phase, off an edge.

.. .. in the end, India lost – what hurts the average Indian fan – was the approach – the crawling, the lack of intent – and when they show Ravi Shastri on screen or Jadhav celebrating that boundary hit .. !!  ~ the feeling was .. ..

the story of a King & his marriage ! (not Chola King) but British King

Some dust has been raised with ill-intended speech on Raja Raja Cholan (Arul Mozhi Varman) – a great Chola Emperor.  Tinseldom has changed – in 1973 came the first Cinemascope movie with Sivaji Ganesan in lead role on ‘King Raja Raja Cholan’.   Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan composed the music for the film.  It was reported that the prints of the movie   were taken to theatres atop an elephant. In Tiruchirappalli, fans hired a helicopter and showered flower petals on the print, The Hindu said.  In schools, we read more of British history .. here is something on a British  King, his marriage and more .. ..

In good olden days, marriage proposals floated between Kingdoms, ensuring peace and harmony amongst them and expansion of territory.  The Treaty of Medina del Campo was an agreement developed in 1489 between England and the nascent Spain. The treaty was made up of twenty-six clauses. The first sixteen dealt with military, economic, and political relations between England and Spain. The seventeenth clause consisted on the marriage between Catherine and Arthur, while the next ten clauses covered the financial settlement, succession, and Catherine's journey arrangements to England.  Its provisions accomplished three goals: the establishment of a common policy for the two countries regarding France, the reduction of tariffs between the two countries, and, most centrally, the arrangement of a marriage contract between Arthur Tudor, eldest son of Henry VII of England, and Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon.

Arthur Tudor (1486 – 1502) was Prince of Wales, Earl of Chester and Duke of Cornwall. As the eldest son and heir-apparent of Henry VII of England, Arthur was viewed by contemporaries as the great hope of the newly established House of Tudor. His mother, Elizabeth of York, was the daughter of Edward IV, and his birth cemented the union between the House of Tudor and the House of York.Plans for Arthur's marriage began before his third birthday; he was installed as Prince of Wales two years later. At the age of eleven, he was formally betrothed to Catherine of Aragon, a daughter of the powerful Catholic Monarchs in Spain, in an effort to forge an Anglo-Spanish alliance against France. Soon after his marriage to Catherine in 1501, the couple took up residence at Ludlow Castle in Shropshire, where Arthur died six months later of an unknown ailment. Catherine would later firmly state that the marriage had not been consummated.

An year after Arthur's death, Henry VII renewed his efforts of sealing a marital alliance with Spain by arranging for Catherine to marry Arthur's younger brother Henry, who had by then become Prince of Wales. Arthur's untimely death paved the way for Henry's accession as Henry VIII in 1509. The question as to the potential consummation of Arthur and Catherine's marriage was much later (and in a completely different political context) exploited by Henry and his court to cast doubt on the validity of Catherine's union with Henry, eventually leading to the separation between the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church.

Catherine of Aragon (Spanish: Catalina;  1485 –  1536) was Queen of England from June 1509 until May 1533 as the first wife of King Henry VIII; she was previously Princess of Wales as the wife of Henry's elder brother Arthur.  Her betrothal with Arthur, Prince of Wales took place when she was 3 years of age !the marriage was to happen in her 16 –For that marriage, a dowry of 200,000 ducats had been agreed, and half was paid shortly after the marriage. Immediately after marriage whilst their stay at  Castle Lodge, both became ill, possibly with the sweating sickness, which was sweeping the area. Arthur died leaving Catherine, a widow. At this point, Henry VII faced the challenge of avoiding the obligation to return her 200,000 ducat dowry, half of which he had not yet received, to her father, as required by her marriage contract should she return home. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1503, King Henry VII initially considered marrying Catherine himself, but the opposition of her father and potential questions over the legitimacy of the couple's issue ended the idea. To settle the matter, it was agreed that Catherine would marry Henry VII's second son, Henry, Duke of York, who was five years younger than she was. She held the position of ambassador of the Aragonese Crown to England in 1507, the first female ambassador in European history.  At 24, she subsequently married Arthur's younger brother, the recently ascended Henry VIII, in 1509. For six months in 1513, she served as regent of England while Henry VIII was in France. During that time the English won the Battle of Flodden, an event in which Catherine played an important part with an emotional speech about English courage !

She was to see more turns in life .. .. ..as by 1525, Henry VIII  infatuated with Anne Boleyn and dissatisfied that his marriage to Catherine had produced no surviving sons, leaving their daughter, the future Mary I of England, as heir presumptive at a time when there was no established precedent for a woman on the throne. He sought to have their marriage annulled, setting in motion a chain of events that led to England's schism with the Catholic Church. When Pope Clement VII refused to annul the marriage, Henry defied him by assuming supremacy over religious matters. In 1533 their marriage was consequently declared invalid and Henry married Anne on the judgement of clergy in England, without reference to the Pope. Catherine refused to accept Henry as Supreme Head of the Church in England and considered herself the King's rightful wife and queen, attracting much popular sympathy. Despite this, she was acknowledged only as Dowager Princess of Wales by Henry. After being banished from court, she lived out the remainder of her life at Kimbolton Castle, and died there on 7 January 1536. English people held Catherine in high esteem, and her death set off tremendous mourning.

The controversial book The Education of a Christian Woman by Juan Luis Vives, which claimed women have the right to an education, was commissioned by and dedicated to her.   Written in 1523, the book was originally published in Latin with the title of De InstitutioneFeminaeChristianae and was dedicated to Catherine of Aragon. The work was translated into English by Richard Hyrde around 1529.

King Henry was to marry many a times more .. .. .. a mnemonic device to remember the names of Henry’s consorts was  “Arrogant Boys Seem Clever, Howard Particularly”; a mnemonic for their fates is "Divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived". King Henry VIII,To six wives he was wedded. One died, one survived,Two divorced, two beheaded. In common parlance, the wives of Henry VIII were the six queens consort wedded to Henry between 1509 and his death in 1547.In legal terms, King Henry VIII of England had only three wives, because three of his putative marriages were annulled. Unlike a divorce, where a married couple chooses to end their union, annulments essentially declare that a true marriage never took place.

History makes more interesting reading that fiction books and movies !!
