My first thoughts on
Till a few decades ago – “Verrilai” was an integral
part of life of people, more especially Brahmins. After major food and after dinner, people
used to take few leaves of Vetrilai with chunnambu - slaked lime or food-grade
lime [Calcium hydroxide]
In recent years after
campaigns of oral cancer – the habit has declined or almost vanished however,
the sale of gutka / paan / maava is on the increase! – understand that while the traditional post-meal practice of
chewing betel leaves (vetrilai) with areca nut and slaked lime has faded among
urban youth, the overall market for betel leaves in Tamil Nadu has shifted
rather than simply declined.
Daily casual chewing after
meals has decreased significantly in urban areas due to changing lifestyles,
urbanization, and the popularity of mouth fresheners or processed pan masala.
However, demand remains exceptionally resilient for traditional, religious, and
cultural purposes. Betel leaves are indispensable for weddings, temple
festivals, housewarmings, and auspicious times.
Tamil Nadu supplies betel leaves
to domestic markets across India as well as international destinations with
sizable Tamil diaspora populations, such as Malaysia, Singapore, the Middle
East, and parts of Europe. Varieties like the famed Avoor vetrilai, kumbakonam
vetrilai and leaves from districts like
Namakkal, Thanjavur, and Chengalpattu maintain steady commercial demand for
export.
Despite steady market value
for quality produce, farmers face mounting challenges, including erratic
monsoons, high water requirements for betel vines (vetrilai kodi), rising labor
costs for harvesting, and susceptibility to fungal diseases.
Now that song
வெத்தலை வெத்தலையோ - had different
connotations !
Rosappu
Ravikkaikari (transl. The girl with the rose-coloured blouse) was different
movie of those days - directed by Devaraj–Mohan it hit the screens
in 1979. A remake of the 1978 Kannada film Parasangada Gendethimma, itself
based on Srikrishna Alanahalli's novella of the same name, the film starred Sivakumar, Deepa and Sivachandran, with Vinu
Chakravarthy and R. Nagarathnamma in supporting roles. Set in British-ruled
India, it revolved around a modern woman who cannot tolerate her rustic husband
and her mother-in-law and engages in an extramarital affair.
The film received an
"A" (adults only) certificate after three cuts. It was a commercial success
but it changed the way movie stories were taken. It daringly highlighted infidelity and its
consequences on screen for the first time" in Tamil cinema
