Hi - this is Srinivasan Sampathkumar from Triplicane. I have a passion for Marine Insurance, Cricket and Temples especially - Sri Parthasarathi swami thirukKoyil, Thiruvallikkeni. From Sept 2009, I am posting my thoughts in this blog; From July 2010, my postings on Temples & Tamil are on my other blog titled "Kairavini Karayinile " (www.tamil.sampspeak.in)
Nothing gives the author more happiness than comments & feedbacks on posts ~ look forward to hearing your views !
Year 2025 is
drawing to a close and tomorrow 2026 would be born.Everywhere in social media, we would see
people wishing ‘Happy New Year’ !
While wishing
our fellow brethren is nothing wrong, perhaps we should be celebrating Tamil
New year and not tomorrow.The
Gregorian calendar, and its Jan. 1 start date, has its origins in ancient Rome.
The goal of many early Roman calendars was to find a way to align lunar cycles,
solar years and seasons, as several religious festivals and holidays revolved
around the equinoxes and moon phases.

This “Parabhava”is not to be confused with the Parabhava
Sutta.The Parabhava Sutta (Discourse on
Downfall) is a fundamental Buddhist scripture found in the Sutta Nipata. It
serves as a counter-discourse to the Maha Mangala Sutta (Discourse on
Blessings), focusing on the behaviors that lead to a person's moral, social,
and spiritual decline. According to the
Buddha's response to a deity's inquiry, hating dhamma, associating with wicked,
laziness, anger, deceiving holy persons, selfishness with Wealth, unreasonable ambition
are among those that would cause difficulty. The sutta emphasizes that a person's "downfall" is not a
matter of fate but a result of their own actions and character.
So another day, another
month, another year by count !! – things would be as normal as they have been.
We
watched that finals of WC on Mar 23, 2003 with great hopes.India used so many bowlers – Zaheer Khan,
Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Virendar Sehwag, Sachin
Tendulkar, Dinesh Mongia & Yuvraj Singh . .. .. but perhaps the match went
Aussie way from the very first wayward over by Zaheer.Australia scored a mammoth 359/2 and India in
return could muster only 234 !!
The
sporting community is rallying around the 54-year-old, who “is in for the fight
of his life”, .. .. the man who scored an unbeaten 88 in that match.
Damien
Martyn – is in a serious condition after falling ill on Boxing
Day and being taken to hospital in Queensland where he was diagnosed with
meningitis, according to sources close to the family. Meningitis is
inflammation of the protective membranes (meninges) around the brain and spinal
cord, often caused by viruses or bacteria, leading to sudden fever, severe
headache, stiff neck, nausea, and light sensitivity, requiring immediate
medical care, especially for severe bacterial forms, as it can be
life-threatening.
Martyn, 54, was taken ill on Boxing
Day with news emerging on Tuesday evening of his condition, that he is currently in an induced coma. There are hopes he
can be brought out of his coma in the coming days.Former players started to take to social
media on Wednesday in support.
Martyn was an
aggressive batter, an occasional medium-pacer and distinguished fieldsman
primarily in the covers who was capable of creating spectacular run-outs. He
also very occasionally kept wicket at first-class level. He was named man of
the series in the Border–Gavaskar Trophy in 2004, to help Australia defeat
India on the subcontinent for the first time in more than 30 years, and was
named in early 2005 as the Australian Test Player of the Year at the annual
Allan Border Medal presentations.He
ended his career with 4406 runs in 67 tests with 13 tons and 5346 ODI runs in
208 matches.
After retirement,
he played in ICL and couple of years later, got enrolled in IPL for Rajasthan
Royals. In that WC finals
in 2003, Martyn stitched a 234 run unbeaten partnership with Ricky
Ponting.Damien made 88 off 84 balls
while Ponting scored 140 off 121 balls.
Sending
‘get well’ sooner wishes for Damien Martyn. Regards – S Sampathkumar 31.12.2025
Are
you among those who feel Chennai has become cold and in the mornings, it is
really chill !!
Millennium
kids of Chennai, may not be able to identify this utopian wearable, that was
once present in every middle class home – a long, short width – cheap wollen
cloth called ‘Muffler’ – that will be out in Margazhi.Aged people would come out wearing muffler,
which now is replaced by monkey caps and ear caps !
Chennai
city which is sweltering heat most times, has some lower temperatures in Dec /
Jan.The December Season can perhaps be divided
into two sections – music and the dance. At traditional places, music winter is
angavastrams drawn over the ears and
head if male, and a woollen shawl if female. At dance festivals, you get to see
pashminas, shah toosh and so on... ..
and Chennaites feel the early morning cold of sub 15
degrees Celsius is biting cold !!
Thousands of Miles away, the coldest place in the USA is likely
somewhere remote in Alaska, specifically areas like Fairbanks or even colder
spots in the interior, given its consistently frigid winters and low-lying
valleys. With a minimum average temperature of about minus
17 degrees Fahrenheit (approx. -8.8 degrees Celsius] Fairbanks takes the
cake as the coldest city in the U.S. The northernmost major city in Alaska,
Fairbanks has seen record cold temperatures reaching minus 66 degrees in the
past.
In
December 2025, Delhi is experiencing its peak winter season, with cool-to-cold
weather, significant fog, and ongoing cultural events. Temperatures generally
range from a minimum of around 8°C (46°F) to a maximum of 23°C (73°F), though
cold waves can cause temperatures to drop further. Here is a photo of cycle rickshaw taken a few
years ago !!
Those
who live in hope for a real winter in Chennai point with some mournful pride at
a highly disputed fact - that for one day in April 1815 temperature in Madras
did drop to below freezing point. There are references to cold weather in the
month of Margazhi (Dec/Jan) and of the falling of pani (dew).

Heard or
seen – ‘Kleptoparasitism’ !?! - a common foraging
strategy where birds [often Crows] steal
food from other birds, and sometimes other animals, instead of finding it
themselves, often relying on intelligence to snatch food from distracted
victims.
The Panchatantra (Sanskrit: पञ्चतन्त्र, "Five
Treatises") is an ancient aIndian collection of interrelated animal fables
in Sanskrit verse and prose, arranged within a "frame story".
Attributed to the scholar Vishnu Sharma around 300 BCE, originally composed to educate on wise conduct
of life and worldly wisdom.
A business
fable is a motivational fable, parable or other fictional story that shares a
lesson or lessons that are intended to be applied in the business world with
the aim to improve leadership skills, personal skills, or the organizational
culture. Business fables are intended to show readers how different leadership,
project management, and other tools can be used in real life situations.
It is a
Schoolmates reunion, whence they discuss the challenge of handling the changes
in lives. A business Manager explains
that he was afraid of change until he heard this allegorical story – of two
mice and two ‘little people’ living in a maze. The mice, named Sniff and Scurry, are
simpleminded and instinctive; they run the same path every day, eating cheese
when they find it, but are always ready to move on. The littlepeople, Hem and
Haw, search for a special kind of Cheese that makes them happy and fulfilled by
keeping track of where they have found it before. All four discover a spot
where their favorite cheese is regularly available, called Cheese Station C.
The mice continue to run the entire maze each day while the littlepeople stop
exploring and settle at Cheese Station C.
One day the supply at
Cheese Station C is exhausted. The mice accept that there is no more cheese and
continue their running path. The littlepeople sit at the station confused and
upset. Hem protests that there ought to be Cheese, and Haw wonders where the
mice have gone. Meanwhile, the mice find a new supply of cheese at Cheese
Station N. The littlepeople remaining at the same place become frustrated, more
as they become hungry. Eventually Haw
accepts that running the maze is the only way he will ever have Cheese again,
faces his fear of moving on, and leaves Hem behind.
On the wall of
Cheese Station N, Hem writes several lessons that change is inevitable and
keeping up with it is the only way to continue having Cheese.
After
Michael finishes the story, the classmates agree to meet again before dinner
and discuss it. They tell different stories of encountering change and how
they, or someone else, failed to respond to it. All of them agree that the
Cheese story is a useful parable to follow and tell their friends.
The foregoing
is essence of - Who Moved My Cheese? -
An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life - by Spencer
Johnson that describes four reactions to change released in 1998. This became a bestselling motivational book
about four characters living in a maze who search for "Cheese" (a
metaphor for what you want in life). .
Who Stole My
Cheese?!! - is
a satirical parody of Spencer Johnson’s book, written to address corporate
scandals and greed, by Ilene Hochberg, which suggests that the cheese (representing
employee benefits and savings) was intentionally taken by "The Boss"
and "The Accountant". It replaces the original mice with two rats
named Snivel and Scurvy and the littlepeople with "loyal employees"
trapped in a maze of corporate underhandedness.
Moving away from books, it
is common for highly intelligent crows to engage in kleptoparasitism,
or food stealing, from other birds, and
animals too. Cormorants are expert
divers, but they often catch large fish that can be difficult and
time-consuming to swallow whole due to the size. This struggle, sometimes
taking minutes, creates a vulnerable window of opportunity. Sometimes crow may wait for a cormorant to surface with
a fish and then harass or distract the cormorant until it drops its catch. In
the ensuing struggle, the crow may successfully snatch the fish, the fish may
escape back into the water, or the cormorant might manage to swallow it just in
time.
The other day, at
Kairavini pushkarini, the temple tank of Sri Parthasarathi swami at Thiruvallikkeni
- a Cormorant emerged out of water
successful with a catch of a fish but within the seconds, its catch was gone,
snatched away by the Crow who flew away with the wish.

although visual matches suggest it might be at a park such as Wonderla or
Imagicaa in India. The non-celebrity people
in the image are shown experiencing the thrilling motion of the ride!! – where ??
The world's first amusement
park was Denmark's Bakken, which opened in 1583 on a plot of land next to a
natural spring whose reputed healing powers was a major attraction for
Copenhagen's residents.The most famous
and visited amusement park in the world is Magic
Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida,
consistently topping global attendance charts, followed closely by other Disney
properties like Disneyland in California and Tokyo Disneyland, known for iconic
rides, immersive theming, and beloved characters, making them global landmarks
for family entertainment.
Magic Kingdom opened as
the first part of the Walt Disney World Resort on October 1, 1971, commencing
concurrently with Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Polynesian Village
Resort. In recent
few decades, many theme parks have sprung up in every major Indian City.
Imagicaa Theme Park, located
near Lonavala, Maharashtra, is a large-scale destination, often compared to
Disneyland, featuring thrilling roller coasters like "Nitro," water
attractions, and live shows. Wonderla – with large "amaze" parks in Bengaluru,
Kochi, and Hyderabad, Wonderla is known for its high-speed rides, extensive
water parks, and laser shows, popular for both wet and dry fun.Essel World located in Mumbaioffers a wide array of rides, from classic
carousels to horror-themed experiences, alongside the adjacent. Nicco Park, in
Calcutta, provides over 35 rides and is known for its scenic gardens and
attractions like the "Giant Cyclone" and "River Caves".

Hindi as Do Phool (1973),[3] in Malayalam as Aanandham Paramaanandham (1977),
in Kannada as Kittu Puttu (1977) and in Marathi as Changu Mangu (1990).
Music was by MS Viswanathan, to the lyrics of legendary Kannadasan. "Madras Nalla Madras" was one of the first songs
that tried to provide a commentary on life in the city – might stir
controversy, if it had come in recent times !!

The lyrics of the song are
not exactly a tribute to the city of Madras sung in the movie by the
wonderful comedian Nagesh. Nagesh, a villager, comes to Madras
and finds himself completely at sea and everything chaotic and
confusing. You can’t blame him, really. Any one experiencing the city for the first
time would feel the same way Nagesh did in the movie.

We have
National Holidays; We celebrate
important days for the Nation including The Independence Day (Aug 15th )
Republic Day (26th Jan) – we recall the
birth and death days of important National leaders. A day
more important than most of them is … 16th December – must be a
much celebrated day commemorating the victory in an important battle for the honour of the Nation.
December 16 is a
special day this year, 54 years ago, on
this day – lot happened - an event that never fails to inspire: Vijay Diwas or
Victory Day. We people from the south of
India have not seen much of wars or for that matter, our Nation’s borders ! –
our Independent Nation’s defence history
perhaps starts with the J&K
War of 1947–48 where the Indian Army fought for the first time for the nation
and delivered a decisive ‘Indian victory’. Pakistan’s attempts at strategic
surprise through the use of Frontier tribesmen to capture J&K were defeated
but our victory proved insufficient to wrest the entire territory before a
ceasefire was brought in place. Yet heroics were not limited. Famous battles at
Badgam, Pattan, Mohra, Uri, Naushahra, Poonch, Tithwal and Zojila should be of
great interest in the current run of patriotism and contribute towards India’s
inspiration. In 1962, before we were born came the bitter frustration of Sino-Indian border conflict.
Victory War
Memorial, formerly called the Cupid's bow, is a memorial in
Chennai, originally constructed to commemorate the victory of the Allied Armies
during World War I and later became the victory war memorial for World War II,
1948 Kashmir Aggression, 1962 War with China and the Indo-Pakistan Wars of 1966
and 1971. This famous place is located to the south of Fort St. George
and marks the beginning of the 13-km-long Marina beach. It is a circular rock
and marble structure built in the area that formerly housed the coastal belfry.
Within what was once called Cupid's Bow stands a flag post with the Tricolour
aflutter, and a squat tower that lances the sky. Beyond the red-and-gold
pennants that line the path are steps that lead to a plaque replete with the
names of men from the Madras Presidency who fell in two World Wars and those
that followed Independence. The towering National Flag is visible over a long distance instilling a
feeling of patriotism.
"Swarnim Vijay
Varsh" 16th Dec 2021 remembered our martyrs of 1971 war. The nation observed 50th year of India’s victory in the war
against Pakistan that led to creation of Bangladesh - remembering our brave
martyrs who laid down their lives to safeguard our borders from Pakistani
intruders.
This day, we remember
the martyrs of our Armed forces, the brave ones who guard the Nation and those
who laid down their lives to safeguard
our borders from Pakistani intruders.

First see for
yourself – then believe. Never be
carried by the words of others – See things with your own eyes and then only
believe !! To see
something yourself, especially when it is something that you would not believe
to exist or be true if you did not see it with your own eyes.
“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.
It was their final, most essential command."
This famous line is
from George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, published in 1949.Doublethink is a process of indoctrination in
which subjects are expected to simultaneously accept two conflicting beliefs as
truth, often at odds with their own memory or sense of reality.
While the specific
phrasing "one must see with own eyes to believe" is a common
variation of the proverb "Seeing is believing," several influential
thinkers and literary works explore the deeper meaning of visual evidence
versus internal truth.
To quote the great
mind of Albert Einstein: "Few are those who see with their own eyes and
feel with their own hearts". Einstein emphasized the importance of
independent thought and personal experience over societal expectations.George Orwell emphasized that the psychological danger of
denying one's own direct observations.
But - "What
meets the eye may not be true" - appearances can be
deceiving; the surface level of something (a person, situation, or object)
often hides deeper meanings, complexities, or hidden truths that require
investigation beyond first impressions to fully understand, as things are often
more interesting, complex, or deceptive than they seem.

Busy
times, business talks - When you meet people, they often want to show you that
they have busy lives.
It
is Sunday – around 4 pm – most people are relaxed ! – some may have got up
after a catnap !!.. .. .. on other
days, people are ‘Busy’ – being busy is not ‘business’.Language skills are quite demanding.
Being
busy means being actively engaged in doing things, but the state can have both
positive and negative effects. While it can lead to personal development,
skill-building, and a sense of accomplishment, it can also lead to stress,
burnout, and neglect of personal relationships and health if it becomes
excessive or is used as a form of avoidance.Do you know that feeling of being so busy that time flies with a blink
of an eye? We’re so busy with all kinds of things—work, friends, going out,
holidays, etc.
The
noun ‘Business’ would mean :buying and
selling as a way of earning money; commerce. [பணம் ஈட்டும் வழியான பொருள்களை
வாங்கலும் விற்றலும். வாணிகம். வர்த்தகம்]. 2.the work that you do as your job.
"Busy
times" in business can refer to peak operational hours or the personal
"busyness" of an entrepreneur, while "business talks"
encompasses everything from formal negotiations to internal strategy
discussions

the tuber such as its origins and nourishing properties remain a mystery even

Ram Kand Mool is a
drum-shaped tuber mainly found in Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh,
Telangana and Maharashtra. It is a
lesser-known variety of tuber and root-fruit. Even though its identity is
mysterious, it is believed to be the flowering stalk of Century plant (Agave
Sisalana or Sisal) via research. It is believed that
Lord Rama consumed this root-fruit when he was in exile for 14 years.
In the 1980s, the
Indian botanists unsuccessfully tried to find more information on Ram Kand
Mool. Later in 1994, the Shivaji University, Kolhapur resorted to DNA
fingerprinting to identify the Ram Kand Mool plant and concluded that it is a
variety of Agave americana. The anatomical study showed the plant is a typical
monocotyledonous vascular bundle arrangement. However, this added more confusion,
as monocots have adventitious roots and not a tap root system. Hence, to find
out the source, the plant material was obtained from a vendor from Jyotiba
Temple in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. The slices of approximately 4.5
inches radius and 2–3 mm breadth were brought to the laboratory and DNA was
extracted from slices of Ram Kand Mool. Its purity was searched on agarose gel.
The plastid locus for maturase k was selected to identify the plant species.
The similarity search revealed 89 per cent identity with the partial sequence
of the plastid locus maturase of Agave sisalana.
In cities, Ram Kand Mool may be available during summer. It is served as thinly cut
slices as a street snack, wrapped in leaves or papers, and eaten raw. It is
seasoned with honey, palm sugar, lime, salt and chilli powder.
