The name of movie  ‘Chithiram Pesuthadi’ –   may not readily strike a chord but the song of Gana Ulaganathan was a big hit those days !!

பட்டித்தொட்டியெல்லாம்   `கானா' உலகநாதன் குரலில் ஒலித்தது கல்யாண பாட்டு - நடுக்கடலில் திருமணம்.:

வாளை மீனுக்கும் விலாங்கு மீனுக்கும் கல்யாணம்

அந்த சென்னார் குனி கூட்டம் எல்லாம் ஊர்கோலம்

அந்த நடுக்கடலில் நடக்குதையா திருமணம்

அங்கு  அசரப்பொடி ஆளுக்கெல்லாம் கும்மாளம்...

இரண்டு மீன் வகைகளுக்கு இடையே கல்யாணம் நடக்குமா ! ?! - மிருகங்களுக்கு இடையே கல்யாணம் மனிதர்களால் நடத்தப்படும்.  சில வருஷங்கள் முன் திருச்சி மாவட்டம் மணப்பாறை, வையம்பட்டி, மருங்காபுரி ஆகிய ஒன்றிய பகுதிகளில் சில  வருடங்களாக மழை பொய்த்து போய், விவசாய பணிகள் தடைபட்டன.  விவசாயிகள் பலர் கூலி வேலைக்கு செல்லும் நிலை ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. குடிப்பதற்கும் போதிய தண்ணீர் கிடைக்காமல் கிராம மக்கள் அவதிப்பட்டனர்.  இந்நிலையில் கழுதைகளுக்கு திருமணம் செய்து வைத்தால் மழை பெய்யும் என்ற  நம்பிக்கையில்  வத்தமணியாரம்பட்டியில் கழுதைகளுக்கு (பஞ்ச கல்யாணி) திருமணம் நடத்தினர்.  அந்த பகுதியில் உள்ள செல்வ விநாயகர் கோவிலில்  கழுதை திருமணம் நடைபெற்றது.   இது மழையை வேண்டி, துயரங்கள் விலகி, சுபிக்ஷம் பெருக - மக்கள் நம்பிக்கையில் நடத்திய நிகழ்வு. 

Some may jump to criticize such beliefs  calling such people illiterates !  - whether one likes them or not, there are beliefs !  - not only in villages – they are prevalent globally.

Many a times, animals of the same family do not inter-mix, they do not marry, mate and produce off-springs, though there are some which does.  Equus is a genus of mammals in the family Equidae, which includes horses, asses, and zebras. Within the Equidae, Equus is the only recognized extant genus, comprising seven living species.  There are selective interbreeding.  For example horses are bred with donkeys.  The result of a donkey stallion mating with a female horse is – Mules having the head of a donkey and  extremities of a horse.  They are strong animals capable of carrying great loads and work in tough conditions of cold and hot.  A horse stallion mating with a female donkey can produce – Hinnies, which are less common as compared to mules.     A zebroid is the offspring of any cross between a zebra and any other equine to create a hybrid.

Recently read the news of Mexico Mayor marrying an alligator – yes it was a  traditional ceremony explained the  Mayor of San Pedro Huamelula.  The ceremony represented the union of the Chontal and Huave indigenous groups.   

Victor Hugo Sosa, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, a small town in Mexico,  married a reptile in a traditional ritual believed to bring good luck to his people. He tied the knot with a female caiman, an alligator-like reptile, which can be found in Mexico and Central and South America.  Sosa and the caiman, called Alicia Adriana, carried out the traditional ceremony which has been held for the past 230 years. The ritual commemorates the peace between the Chontal and Huave indigenous groups, with the mayor, representing the Chontal king, marrying the reptile, symbolising a Huave princess, in a union of the two communities.

According the local traditions - the caimanis  the “princess girl”, with the mayor saying during the ritual: “I accept responsibility because we love each other. That is what is important. You can’t have a marriage without love… I yield to marriage with the princess girl.”Victor Hugo Sosa, Mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, kissed the head of the caiman before marrying her in San Pedro Huamelula, Oaxaca state, Mexico on June 30, 2023.

Prior to the ceremony, the reptile was carried from house to house, with locals holding and dancing with her.  The bride wore  a green skirt and a headdress of ribbons and sequins before being changed into a white brides dress for the ceremony. Her jaw was however tied shut to prevent any potential injuries. After Sosa and the caiman married, the mayor and the “princess girl” danced to traditional music.

People expressed happiness at the marriage and stated that it made them proud of their roots stating it as a beautiful tradition.
