K-drama Squid Game became a huge hit on Netflix after its premiere in 2021. The Netflix original series went down in history as the most viewed show on the streaming platform globally. Squid Game has now landed its first Emmy awards on Sunday. Actress Lee You-mi took home Emmys for guest drama actress at the Creative Arts Emmys. She played the role of Ji-young in Squid Game. Ji-young’s character was a woman who entered the game after she was freed from prison.

Lee You-mi accepted the award that was held in Los Angeles. During the acceptance speech, she spoke in Korean followed by exclaiming her happiness by saying, “I'm so very happy!"  Squid Game is a sensation. A violent Korean drama that mixes childhood nostalgia with vast amounts of death, the series has surpassed all expectations to become the most successful show in Netflix history.

‘Why is Squid Game’s English-Language Acting So Bad?’ demanded one  headline, echoing the sentiment of hundreds of tweets and memes. The culprits are the “VIPs” – four English-speaking, mask-wearing billionaires who watch the action from afar, placing bets on the outcome of the carnage. To the naysayers, the VIP acting in Squid Game is stilted and mannered, and pulls them out of the show. But who are the people behind the masks?

Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama television series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Netflix. The series revolves around a contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children's games for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion prize. The title of the series draws from a similarly named Korean children's game. Hwang had conceived of the idea based on his own economic struggles early in life, as well as the class disparity in South Korea and capitalism. Though he had initially written it in 2009, he was unable to find a production company to fund the idea until Netflix took an interest around 2019 as part of their drive to expand their foreign programming offerings.

Squid Game was released worldwide in Sept 2021, to critical acclaim and international attention. It is Netflix's most-watched series, becoming the top-viewed program in 94 countries and attracting more than 142 million member households and amassing 1.65 billion viewing hours during its first four weeks from launch, surpassing Bridgerton for the title of most watched show.
