Internet search engines.. Wikipedia and Jadeja messed up

Do you know or have heard of : lycos, blekko, dogpile, duck duckgo, yippy, mahalo…..  don’t make a google search…. These are some of the search engines……..  A  web search engine is software code that is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are generally presented in a line of results often referred to as search engine results pages (SERP's).

‘Google’ is the most popular one…. It has now become a figure of speech to ‘google’ something – which actually is searching for something through ‘google’s search engine’.  The web search engine one of the most popular and most used ones, is owned by Google Inc.  Millions utilize this service daily and almost every time they reach out to the web.  The order of search results on Google's search-results pages is based, in part, on a priority rank called a "PageRank". The main purpose of Google Search is to hunt for text in publicly accessible documents offered by web servers (in formats such as HTML, PDF, etc.). Google Search was originally developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1997.  There are some specialized searched including  "Search by Image" feature.

Another equally popular internet resource is ‘Wikipedia’  ~ unique because it is a collaboratively edited, multilingual, free Internet encyclopedia supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its 25 million articles, over 4.1 million in the English Wikipedia alone, are written collaboratively by volunteers around the world. Almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site. Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. Understand that ‘wiki’ means quick in Hawaiian language.

Many of us [including Yours Truly] take the Wiki articles as the base for their search purpose as it is comprehensive and easy to access.

So far, so good………… sadly, the open nature of Wikipedia has led to various concerns, such as the quality of writing, the amount of vandalism and the accuracy of information. Some articles contain unverified or inconsistent information.  Here is what vandals can do…. [it was fixed somewhat immediately too]

Sure, you have heard of Jaddu ~ Ravindra Jadeja, who has been tormenting Michael Clarke with his spin.  He has had him 5 times this series.  Jadeja once considered good only for T20, made his ODI debut in Lanka in Feb 2009 and now has been performing well as a spinner in the present series.  Remember that he was bought for crores of ruppes by CSK.

People were in for a shock when they searched for Jadeja in Wikipedia today……. It read…. Jadeja is a Nobel winner, philanthropist, double Laureus winner and was knighted….

A google search on ‘sampspeak.in’ threw out 5930 results in 0.27 seconds, making Yours Truly happy.

  1. www.SeekFreak.com is a powerful dual searcher (search 2 search engines at once and switching between 200 engines). Many "easter eggs" (tools, advanced settings) for customizing favelets, bookmarklets, searches and how it works. Down through the middle you will find a handy search bar/frame with the top 200 search sites on the internet ready to go (also add your own).
