One thing every human loves is – deep comfortable sleep ! – there are some who enjoy the luxury of a short nap in the Afternoon. It is known as ‘cat-nap’ ! - ~ what is it for cattle ?? the sleep of a bull is called ‘Bull-dozer’ ??
The sleep of cattle is called polyphasic sleep, meaning they sleep in short intervals throughout the day and night, and they do not have a specific name for their sleep like "siesta". While they can doze while standing, cows must lie down for deep sleep, including REM sleep.
Interestingly - Cows
can rest in a light, "dozing" sleep while standing up. They can also
stand for periods of "power naps" where they are resting but still
somewhat aware of their surroundings. This is because their legs are able to
lock into place, allowing them to rest without fully collapsing. For deeper sleep and to enter REM sleep, cows
must lie down on their chests with their legs tucked under them, known as
sternal recumbency. The total sleep time
for a cow is about 4 hours a day, often split between day and night, though
most REM sleep occurs at night.
