Lawsonia inermis (Henna) !!

Lawsonia inermis,  may not exactly strike a chord !!  - but for sure, every women knows it too well.  I had taken this picture of its flowers from quite a distance, yet so many were able to identify it easily as ‘Maruthani (Henna)’.   The species is named after the Scottish physician Isaac Lawson, a good friend of Linnaeus.

Pictured here are the common ‘ Henna leaves’ – மருதாணி  -  Henna is a tall shrub or small tree, standing 1.8 to 7.6 m tall (6 to 25 ft). It is glabrous and multi-branched, with spine-tipped branchlets. The leaves grow opposite each other on the stem.   Henna flowers have four sepals; petals are ovate, with white or red stamens found in pairs on the rim of the calyx tube. The ovary is four-celled, and are fragrant.  Henna fruits are small, brownish capsules.  Its dried leaves are the source of the dye henna used to dye skin, hair and fingernails, as well as fabrics including silk, wool and leather. To make dye, only the leaves that grow in the lower part of the plant are taken.  Its leaves also have antifungal and antiseptic properties.

Mehndi   is a form of temporary skin decoration using a paste created with henna. In the West, mehndi is commonly known as henna tattoo, although it is not a permanent tattoo.   There are many different designs and forms of mehndi, often known as henna. For celebrations, women traditionally apply mehndi to their hands and feet. Rich brown is the most popular henna color, which is produced using a natural dye made from the Lawsonia inermis plant. But modern patterns now incorporate hues like white, red, black, and gold, enabling more individualized and varied artistic expressions.

Lawsonia inermis, also known as hina, the henna tree, the mignonette tree, and the Egyptian privet,  is a flowering plant and one of the only two species of the genus Lawsonia, with the other being Lawsonia odorata.  The species is named after the Scottish physician Isaac Lawson, a good friend of Linnaeus.  Isaac Lawson  was a Scottish physician, studied at  Leiden University.   With  Jan Frederik Gronovius he helped fund the printing of Linnaeus' Systema Naturæ in 1735. Lawson obtained his doctorate in medicine in 1737 in Leiden with a thesis on zinc oxide. He later became a physician for the British army and took part in the War of the Austrian Succession. His death was possibly caused by wounds he sustained at the Battle of Lauffeldt on in  1747.  Carl Linnaeus dedicated to him the genus Lawsonia,  the henna of the East.

A person who regularly submits flowers as kainkaryam to Thirukkovil shared this beautiful garland made by her intertwining maruthani flowers for fragrance.

The tamil song at the start is from movie ‘Sakkarakatti’ (sugar cube!)  written and directed by Kala Prabhu and produced by his father, Kalaipuli S. Dhanu. It featured debutant Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, the son of veteran actor-director K. Bhagyaraj, in the lead role while Ishita Sharma and  Vedhika.

Interesting !

rain drops on a leaf !!

Coconuts lessons

Appearances are deceptive !  - yesterday took a casual snap of bunch of coconuts hanging grandly on a tree ! – we know that coconuts have a hard shell !! – obseve this bunch .. ……….

The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the palm tree family (Arecaceae) and the only living species of the genus Cocos.[1] The term "coconut" (or the archaic "cocoanut")[2] can refer to the whole coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which botanically is a drupe, not a nut. The name comes from the old Portuguese word coco, meaning "head" or "skull", after the three indentations on the coconut shell that resemble facial features. They are ubiquitous in coastal tropical regions and are a cultural icon of the tropics.

Upon a close-up of the same photo – observe that some of the coconuts – those hard shells had been penetrated neatly and the contents inside had been emptied !! (this is a cropped view not one taken on ground)

Life is always interesting !

Ambon Island is part of the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. The island has an area of 775 km2 (299 sq mi) and is mountainous, well watered, and fertile. Ambon Island consists of two territories - the city of Ambon to the south and various districts (kecamatan) of the Central Maluku Regency to the north. The main city and seaport is Ambon (with a 2014 population of 368,987), which is also the capital of Maluku province.  Ambon has an airport and is home to the Pattimura University and Open University (Universitas Terbuka), state universities, and a few private universities.

Coleus amboinicus, synonym Plectranthus amboinicus,  is a semi-succulent perennial plant in the family Lamiaceae with a pungent oregano-like flavor and odor. The origin of Coleus amboinicus is unknown, but it may be native to Africa, and  India. Coleus amboinicus is widely cultivated and naturalized elsewhere in the tropics where it is used as a spice and ornamental plant.  Common names in English include Indian borage, country borage, French thyme, Indian mint, Mexican mint, Cuban oregano, soup mint, Spanish thyme.  The species epithet, amboinicus refers to Ambon Island, in Indonesia, where it was apparently encountered and described by João de Loureiro (1717 – 1791)

what connects famous Cognac to home grown Veldt grapes ?

Cognac is a variety of brandy named after the commune of Cognac, France. It is produced in the surrounding wine-growing regions.  Over the centuries,  Cognac has been almost universally recognised as the finest of all the spirits that are distilled from grapes. It has many incomparable qualities: fruitiness, subtlety of bouquet, intensity, warmth and, above all, the complexity of the many thousands of styles and flavours.  At least 90% of the brandy must be comprised of those grapes, while an additional 10% can be made of other kinds, such as Semillon, Folignan, & more..  Grapes ! ~ do you like them most?

A grape is a fruit, botanically a berry, of the deciduous woody vines of the flowering plant genus Vitis. Grapes can be eaten fresh as table grapes or they can be used for making wine, jam, grape juice, jelly, grape seed extract, raisins, vinegar, and grape seed oil.  Ever heard of ‘veldt-grapes’ ?

An old book on recipe for making appalams read : mix the cumin seeds with the flour, pour in the asafoetida water and the salted pirandai water ! ~ if you are wondering curious what ?  for – veldt-grape – it is pirandai !!

Maharashtra’s grape growers are in a tight spot with the export of about 35,000 tons stuck due to the coronavirus spread.   The maximum number of grape consignments are exported to  Netherlands,  followed by the UK  and Germany.  Due to Covid related issues, it is reported that almost  30 per cent of the grapes are still in the fields. Lockdowns and depleting demand for grapes abroad is  a cause for concern for farmers. The demand in supermarkets in the UK and Germany has gone down drastically, according to exporters.

In France, Cognac makers are considering overturning longstanding tradition and turning to new grape varieties, as the main cultivar required to make the spirit struggles with the effects of global warming. Cognac’s star grape, Ugni blanc, which accounts for 98% of the vines in the Cognac region, is ripening quicker and losing acidity as summers become hotter and drier. The rules that govern the French brandy are among the strictest in the drinks world, and are subject to controlled appellation of origin (AOC) specifications. Each stage of the spirit’s production, including the types of grapes that can be used, is outlined in its AOC.

This is no post on    Brandy, Spirit, distillation, Cognac  or even grapes – it is on veldt-grape !

The Vitaceae are a family of dicotyledonous flowering plants including the grapevine and Virginia creeper. The family name is derived from the genus Vitis.  Though by looks it is totally unrelated cousin, ‘Cissus quadrangularis’ (பிரண்டை)  is a perennial plant of the grape family. It is commonly known as veldt grape, devil's backbone, adamant creeper, asthisamharaka, hadjod and pirandai.  The species is native to tropical Asia, Arabia and much of Africa.

Cissus quadrangularis has been used as a medicinal plant since antiquity.  Cissus has been used in various Ayurvedic classical medicines to heal broken bones and injured ligaments and tendons. In siddha medicine it is considered a tonic and analgesic. The Assamese people and the Garo tribe of Meghalaya and Bangladesh use them for bone fracture.

I never knew that Pirandai too blooms ~ and here are some photos of the pirandai plant in our terrace.
