It
was early 1990s and our group of Officers of PSU Insurers had just boarded –
Tamil Nadu Express bound for Madras Central
at New Delhi Railway station, – we had around half an hour and found that at
least 4 members were missing .. .. those were no mobile days ! – as we waited
anxiously, those persons who had gone to nearby Panchkuian Road came with
handful of ____________!!!
What is your priced possession of furniture at home ? – cosy
sofa, easy-chairs, bubble baskets, teakwood / rosewood chairs or simple plastic
chairs ! - not many would like to sit on
stools (without back support) and younger generation may not know that ‘cane
modas’ were part of middle income households ! – cousins would fight for right
to sit on chair, stating that they could study well only when sitting on it and
et al.
முன்ன ஒரு காலத்துல வீடுகளில 'பிரம்பு மோடா'
எனும் ஒரு பொருள் வாழ்ந்து வந்தது. மணல் சார்ந்த
நீர்நிலைகளின் அருகே வளரும் பிரம்புச்செடி, மிகப் பழமையான ஒரு தாவரமாகும். lபிரம்பு
உலகெங்கும் வளரும் போவேசியே குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த நெகிழ்ச்சித்தன்மையான வன்தண்டைக்
கொண்ட பல்லாண்டுத் தாவரமாகும்.
திருவிளையாடற்புராணத்தில்

அமைச்சர்களும் படைத்தலைவர்களும் உடன் புறப்பட்டனர். தேரும் வந்து சேர்ந்தது; சங்குகள்
முழங்கத் தடாதகை தேரில் ஏறிப் புறப்பட்டாள். வாத்தியங்கள் முழங்கின; யானை, குதிரை,
தேர், காலாள் என்னும் நால்வகைப் படைகளும் உடன் சென்றன. சுமதி என்னும் அமைச்சன் மற்றொரு
தேரில் ஏறிச் சென்றான். நங்கை தன் குறிப்பு நோக்கி நாற்பெரும்படையும் செல்ல அம்மையார்தம்
செங்கையில் பிரம்பு தாங்கிச் சேவகம் செலுத்திச் சென்றாள்.
இன்றைய மில்லினியம் கிட்ஸ் அறியாதது ... .. அன்றைய பள்ளி நாட்களில், ஆசிரியர்களின்
கையில் ஒரு ஆயுதம் - பிரம்பு .. .. ஆசிரியர்களும், பெற்றோரும் சில சமயங்களில் பின்னி பெடல் எடுப்பார்கள். சமயத்தில் பிரம்பு பிய்ய பிய்ய நண்பர்கள் (நாம்
!!) அடி வாங்கிய நினைவுகளும் உண்டு
!!! சீர்காழியில் இருந்த வரும் பிரம்புகளுக்க
ஒரு தனி மவுசு ! என படித்தேன். சீர்காழி அருகே உள்ள தைக்கால் கிராம மக்கள் பிரம்பு
பொருட்கள் செய்வதையே பிரதானத் தொழிலாகக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர். இப்பொது சென்னையில், அந்தமான் பிரம்பு பொருட்களின் விற்பனை சூடுபிடித்துள்ளது.
பிரம்பு மூங்கில் பொருட்கள் சொகுசு பங்களாக்களையும், வி.ஐ.பி., வீடுகளின்
வரவேற்பு அறைகளை மட்டும் அழகுப் படுத்தி வந்தது
நடுத்தர, சாதாரண வகுப்பு மக்களின் இல்லங்களில் அமர அரியாசனம் 'பிரம்பு மோடா' தான். இப்போது .பிரம்பு மூங்கில் வாயிலாக கட்டில், சோபா,
சேர், டைனிங் டேபிள், பூக்கூடை, ஊஞ்சல் என, ஒரு வீட்டிற்கு மரத்தில் செய்யப்படும் பொருட்களுக்கு
நிகராக செய்யப்படுகிறது.
இங்கே கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன் பற்றிய ஒரு துணுக்கு பத்திரிகையில் படித்தது
- ஒருநாள் காலை. அப்பா வாசலில் உட்கார்ந்து
பேப்பர் படித்துக் கொண்டுஇருக்கிறார்.“ சார் மோடா” என்று வாசலில் ஒருகுரல் கேட்கிறது.
பேப்பரில் இருந்து தலையை சற்று நிமிர்த்திப் பார்க்கிறார்.ஒரு வடநாட்டுக்காரன்,மோடா
என்று சொல்லப்படும் பிரம்பு ஸ்டூல்களுடன் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தான். ஏழு அல்லது எட்டு
மோடாக்கள் அவன் உடலில் சுற்றி கட்டப்பட்டு இருந்தன.“ உள்ளே வா“ என்று அப்பா அவனை அழைத்தார்.
அவன் வந்து மோடாக்களை இறக்கி வைத்து விட்டு அப்பாடா என்று கீழே உட்கார்ந்தான். பிறகு
அந்த மோடா மீது என்னை உட்கார சொன்னான். நான் உட்கார்ந்ததும் அதில் இருந்து பாட்டு சத்தம்
கேட்டது. எனக்கும் என் சகோதரர்களுக்கும் ஒரே ஆச்சரியம் .அந்த மோடாவின் உள்ளே ஒரு டிரான்சிஸ்டர்
ரேடியோ வைக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தது.அதன்மீது உட்கார்ந்தால் ஒரே ஒரு ஸ்டேஷன் ஒலிக்கும் வகையில்
அது செய்யப்பட்டு இருந்தது.ஒரு அரைமணி நேரம் கழித்து வீட்டில் அங்கங்கே பாட்டு சத்தம்
கேட்டு, அம்மா வேகவேகமாக வாசலுக்கு வந்து பார்த்தால் ஏழு மோடக்களை வாங்கியிருந்தார்
அப்பா. ஒன்று வாங்கினால் போதுமே, ஒரே பாட்டுத்தானே என்றதற்கு கவிஞர் - நிறைய இருந்தால் சண்டை வராது
மேலும் விற்கும் அவனின் வாழ்க்கையும் சிறக்கும் என்றாராம்.

Pallikaranai.
Those
friends had gone shopping to Delhi Panchquian road for buying Cane modas –
stating that they were much cheaper than in Madras and each one of them had
bought more than 4 and carried them all the way with some difficulty! Those
days Panchkuian road was famous for furniture – there were so many shops on
that road in Delhi .. .. and a few years later, MCD and NDMC demolished most of
the shops on this stretch on one Sunday
morning. These shops were then shifted
to Bhai Veer Singh Marg near Gole Market.
On that day, the 192 shopowners on Panchkuian Road, however, claimed
that they were yet to get possession letters for their new shops from Delhi
Metro Rail Corporation. While MCD
demolished 180 shops at Panchkuian Road, NDMC demolished all 22 shops under
their jurisdiction. According to MCD, these shops were falling in the right of
way — after the construction of the Metro line — and were required to be
vacated for construction of a road from Rajiv Chowk to Jhandewalan. "The
road from this side could not be developed as the occupants of these shops were
not vacating them and had approached various courts. This matter was under
litigation for more than five years. Following the recent vacation of all the
stay orders, we decided to carry out demolition in the area," said a
spokesperson.
