let me tell a kutti stori ! ~ Cat Jump !

How busy are you !  spend time alone at house terrace and other places – love nature, animals, sceneries !!   If yes to all – you are also a ‘velai illa vetti person like me ‘ ! – so hear a kutti stori !

Well another day – for those at home whether it is Monday or Thursday or anyother day does not count !!

Do they really "defy gravity"?

Not at all. Gravity accelerates cats at the same rate as any other object—about 9.8 m/s² near Earth's surface. What makes cats extraordinary is their ability to: orient themselves while falling; reduce their falling speed by increasing air resistance,  and absorb the landing forces exceptionally well.

So the illusion of "defying gravity" comes from masterful control of their body while gravity does exactly what it always does.  As we watch Cat leaping down from a wall or tree – it does look effortless and it lands on its paws gracefully without hurting any part of its body.    In reality, it's the result of millions of years of evolution producing one of nature's finest acrobats.

once upon a time ! there was lockdown !

Life was simple ! – people would get up, morning chores, breakfast, rush to office,  toil in Office, return late in the evening or early night, eat dinner, hit bed and repeat!

Then in Mar 2020 – life turned difficult for many – newer words and newer meanings – came ‘lockdown’ – people had to remain in home, not in touch with others – Corona Virus, Covid 19 and   the behaviour of Covidiots !

One day curfew was imposed and then came - Janata Curfew for  21 days  announced by Prime Minister of the Nation Shri Narendra Modiji.  He emphasised the need of remaining at home, not crossing the Lakshman Rekha !

The affected people statistics was alarming.  "It took 67 days for the first lakh people to be infected from coronavirus. It took only 11 days for the next 1 lakh to be infected. Even more scary was the fact that it took only four days for the figure to rise to 3 lakhs," –

Fortunately, lockdown is a thing of the past !  ~ people memories are short lived and so most have forgotten that there was one !!

Cat-nap!

On holidays, do you fall sleep in the Afternoons !  (not a Q to those fortunate to sleep on all days of the week !)  Sleep is every day activity.  Many a times, when you get up after a short [or long sleep in AN] – you may have some confusion on the time of the day – is it morning or evening ?

Siesta,  a ‘Spanish’ word  from the Latin hora sexta – "the sixth hour" (counting from dawn, therefore noon), hence "midday rest”.  The afternoon sleep is often called ‘Catnap’. A catnap is a short sleep, usually one which you have during the day. The term takes its origin from how cats take a series of naps throughout the day and night.

Cat wisdom !! ~

On offer, on Sale !!!

People (read women) halt at shops with board ‘on Sale’ !  Discount sales techniques involve various strategies to lower the price of products or services temporarily, aiming to boost sales, move inventory, and attract customers. These strategies include offering percentage-based discounts, buy-one-get-one-free deals, tiered discounts based on spending, flash sales, and more.

What your read on the  board is incidental and irrelevant - don't trouble them calling for retail or bulk supplies !!

Belling a Cat !!

De muribus tintinnabulum feli appendere volentibus

Every morning there is a new problem and some evenings there are solutions – one need to think and find way out of problems rather than be bogged down and the solutions needs to be practical and implementable.

Long long ago, in trying to escape from the killer cats and be alive – the Mice Council decided  to put a bell on a cat's neck to alert them of its presence.  While everyone appreciated it as a grand idea – they were unable to   find a mouse brave and capabale  enough to actually attach the bell to the cat.

One of the earliest versions of the story appears as a parable critical of the clergy in Odo of Cheriton's Parabolae. It was written around 1200, and later  translated into Welsh, French and Spanish.  Odo of Cheriton  was an English preacher and fabulist who spent a considerable time studying in Paris and then lecturing in the south of France and in northern Spain.  In the following century, the Italian author Laurentius Abstemius made of the fable a Latin cautionary tale titled De muribus tintinnabulum feli appendere volentibus (The mice who wanted to bell the cat) in 1499. A more popular version in Latin verse was written by Gabriele Faerno and printed posthumously in his Fabulae centum ex antiquis auctoribus delectae (100 delightful fables from ancient authors, Rome 1564).

The phrase "who will bell the cat?" is an idiom that asks who will be brave enough to undertake a risky or dangerous task, often one that others are unwilling to do. It originates from a fable about mice who want to put a bell on a cat's neck to warn them of its approach, but no one is willing to actually do it.

The problems are not complex always – as proved here – a belled cat

Cat Stare !! -

A captivating song from ‘Kandu Konden, kandukonden’  starring Mamooty, Ajit, Iswarya Rai, Tabu . .. directed by Rajiv Menon.

Cats are among the most adorable pets !  ~ there are times when they stare at you and rarely they close their eyes in front of you too !!

Staring  is one of many forms of communications cats use towards others. Typically a cat might stare at new or unfamiliar faces as an intimidation tactic, in hopes that the other cats/ humans  will blink or shy away. Cats are visual hunters, so naturally, they tend to stare in order to keep a close eye on potential prey. Cats will also use a direct stare when they are feeling territorial, showing dominance, or posing a threat or challenge to other cats.

Those wide-eyed fixed gaze can be a bit unnerving.  Rather than challenging you to a staring contest, this curious behaviour is actually something you may have trained your moggy to do without even realising it. As a solitary species, cats don’t naturally feel the need to hold eye contact with others to communicate but if they think they can get something out of it, then they might be willing to give it a go. Depending on your cat and their temperament, their stare might be a little creepy, especially if they are staring with dilated pupils right into your eyes! Cats' pupil sizes can shift dramatically depending on how focused they’re looking at something. Instead of staring, they might keep their eyes partially open or give you slow blinks.

Playing ‘hide & seek’ is  an adorable game parents have played with their young children for generations. Researchers are looking for a scientific answer to explain why children think they actually disappear when they cover their eyes while playing peekaboo. A few years ago, researchers  at the University of Cambridge  carried out study into this bizarre trait with groups of three and four-year-old children. The children's eyes were covered with masks and they were then asked whether they could be seen by the researchers - with most saying no.

Many also believed that the researchers could not see adults who were wearing eye masks - leading to the conclusion most young children believe that anyone who covers their eyes is obscured from other people's view. The researchers then attempted to distinguish what exactly creates the feeling of invisibility - whether it was not being able to see at all or just because the other person couldn't see their eyes. The children were given a pair of mirrored goggles so that while they could see through the glasses, no one could see their eyes. Unfortunately, only 7 of the 37 participating children were able to get to grips with the idea that while they could still see, no one could see their eyes.

Of those who did understand the concept, six believed they were invisible if the researchers couldn't see their eyes, even if they could still see them. Although when the children were asked to explain how they were made invisible by simply hiding their eyes, many knew that their bodies remained visible, suggesting a childhood distinction between their physical bodies and the 'self' they connect to their eyes. To test this theory that children believe they can be seen only through their eyes, the researchers looked directly at each of the children while asking them to avert their gaze.

They then did the same process in reverse, with the children looking at the researchers while they diverted their eyes.  In each instance, the majority of children felt they were not being seen so long as their eyes didn't meet the other person's, giving some support to the ideology of eyes being the the window to the soul.

Interesting !!  ~  back in Nov 2012, in SYMA Bliss issue 7/volume I - கண்கள் காண்டற்கு அரியது என இந்த குழந்தைகள் கண் மூடிக்கொள்ளுதல் பற்றிய ஆராய்ச்சி பற்றி எழுதி இருந்தேன்.

The tamil movie - ‘Kandu Konden, kandukonden’   was based on ‘Sense and Sensibility’ (working title; Elinor and Marianne), the first novel by the English author Jane Austen, published in 1811.

Cat drinking water

WE have seen pictures of wild animals – Lions, Tigers, cattle, Elephants and more coming to streams and ponds for drinking water.

For pet, most people tend to provide milk – many believe that a big bowl of milk in front is liked by them.  However, it is stated that Cats don’t need milk to stay healthy – the least the milk of a cow.  Some cats  are lactose intolerant too  which means that milk can upset their stomach.

Water is the single most important nutrient in the animal body. It is essential for all metabolic processes, chemical reactions, temperature regulation, eliminating waste from the body, and ultimately, health and survival. Domestic cats are descendants of larger felines that did not require much water for everyday living. Cats drink small amounts of water throughout the day, while dogs lap up large amounts at a time.

Even though cats don’t drink huge amounts of water, hydration is necessary for the body to survive and to perform vital jobs.

Sleep well and earn !! ~

When do you hit bed daily ~ how long and how well do you sleep !! ~ it is around 2 pm now – and would you like to have a short nap !    For sure a cosy bed like this gives a comfortable sleep, then there are some who can literally sleep on any floor !!

This song of Pattukkottai KalyanaSundaram from MGR starrer    “Nadodi Mannan” [literally – the vagabond King]  released in 1958 was a great hit and used to blare loudly. The film was re-released several times.   K. Ramnath was appointed to direct this movie, but upon his suddden demise in 1956, MGR took up the direction as well. According to some reports the completed movie ran for around 5 hours; in between, many Editors changed and finally  the film  ran more than 3.5 hours. Music Director N. S. Balakrishnan was appointed to compose music and made three songs. Then S. M. Subbaiah Naidu stepped in and completed the remaining songs and composed the background score as well.

The song titled “தூங்காதே தம்பி… தூங்காதே…” is primarily an advice of not to sleep at wanton places and to be alert.  It says, those who sleep mindlessly will earn the sobriquet of ‘lazy / idle persons’ and lists out what and all those who slept at the decisive hour missed in life….true words of advice indeed.

நல்ல பொழுதையெல்லாம் தூங்கி கெடுத்தவர்கள்;

Some of us  try to sleep as little as possible. There are so many things that seem more interesting or important than getting a few more hours of sleep, but just as exercise and nutrition are essential for optimal health and happiness, so is sleep. The quality of your sleep directly affects the quality of your waking life, including your mental sharpness, productivity, emotional balance, creativity, physical vitality, and even your weight. Sleep isn’t exactly a time when your body and brain shut off.

Sleep is a vital biological process that plays a crucial role in maintaining physical and mental health. It allows the body to rest, repair, and restore itself, impacting various functions including memory, mood, and immune response. Afternoon naps can be a beneficial practice for many individuals, but their effectiveness largely depends on timing and duration.   A short nap can improve mood, boost alertness, and enhance cognitive performance.   Napping has been linked to improved memory retention and learning capabilities.   For those who are sleep-deprived, a brief nap can help mitigate the effects of sleep loss, making it easier to remain alert and safe, particularly for drivers or those operating machinery.  The ideal time to take a nap is in the early afternoon, typically between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., coinciding with a natural dip in energy levels known as the "post-lunch dip".

While one cannot dream of sleeping while at work, there seemingly is one who is paying for sleeping – a Company called Wakefit that runs a programme - ‘Sleep Champion’ in Wakefit’  unique sleep internship program.

Saishwari Patil, an investment banker from Bengaluru, won Rs 9 lakh for prioritising sleep in Wakefit's sleep internship program. Participants were tasked with adhering to strict sleep schedules while gaining insights into sleep science and improving their overall rest quality.S aishwari, an investment banker from Bengaluru, has turned her dreams of catching up on sleep into a lucrative reality. She  won the ‘Sleep Champion’ title in Bangalore-based start-up Wakefit’s third season of its sleep internship program. She was one of the 12 ’sleep interns’ of the program — designed for individuals who prioritise sleep but often find their lives interfering — requiring participants to sleep diligently for at least eight to nine hours every night.

The sleep internship, designed for individuals who struggle to get enough rest, requires participants to sleep at least eight to nine hours each night. Saishwari was one of twelve selected "sleep interns," each provided with a premium mattress and a contactless sleep tracker to monitor their sleep patterns. Interns also attended workshops led by experienced sleep mentors to enhance their sleep habits. The selection process for the internship involved multiple steps. Initially, applications were screened to create a shortlist, followed by a video resume round where candidates expressed their passion for sleep. Finalists then underwent personal interviews to evaluate their enthusiasm for improving their sleep quality.

Perhaps from today, many of us would practice sleeping !  and apply for internship, irrespective of age !!  - Are you ready ??  - it is AN time to take a nap !!  -   yours friendly aasami sirippu sinthanaiyaan.

sleep without guilt ! - never search on web !!

A few decades ago, most people believed sleep was a passive activity during which the body and brain were dormant. “But it turns out that sleep is a period during which the brain is engaged in a number of activities necessary to life—which are closely linked to quality of life.”

For some addicted to social media, the sleeping time is getting reduced.  When one is sleep deprived, eyes and mind crave for a nap.   Napping offers various benefits for healthy adults, including: relaxation, fatigue reduction, increase in alertness, good moods, quicker reaction and better memory.  The timing of sleep in humans depends upon a balance between homeostatic sleep propensity, the need for sleep as a function of the amount of time elapsed since the last adequate sleep episode, and circadian rhythms which determine the ideal timing of a correctly structured and restorative sleep episode.

Siesta,  a ‘Spanish’ word  from the Latin hora sexta – "the sixth hour" (counting from dawn, therefore noon), hence "midday rest”.  It is the  traditional daytime sleep of Spain, and through Spanish influence, of many Latin American countries. Factors explaining the geographical distribution of the modern siesta are mainly high temperatures and heavy intake of food at the midday main meal.   The "siesta" can refer to the nap itself, or more generally to a period of the day.

The afternoon sleep is often called ‘Catnap’. A catnap is a short sleep, usually one which you have during the day. The term takes its origin from how cats take a series of naps throughout the day and night. This idiosyncratic cat-like behavior is thought to help cats stay their alert and agile selves, and humans can take afternoon napping to reap similar benefits. There’s no medical definition of a catnap, and there’s no strict limit on how long they last.

In case you get confused when you get up of the time of the day ! – thinking of getting up, brushing your teeth as in the morning, while it is evening, don’t feel bad and never start crazily querying on forums and searching on web.  If you do so, you might get influenced by some modern phraseology like :

Confusional arousals -  a sleep disorder that causes you to act in a very strange and confused way as you wake up or just after waking. It may appear that you don’t know where you are or what you are doing. One may have slow speech, stammering, confused thinking, poor memory, blunt responses !!   When a confusional arousal occurs, you may seem to be awake even though you have a foggy state of mind. Episodes often start when someone else physically wakes you up forcefully.

Sleepwalking or shouting during an episode is common. Some people with confusional arousals also grind their teeth.  Confusional arousals is considered a parasomnia.

‘Sundowning" refers to a state of confusion that occurs in the late afternoon and lasts into the night. Sundowning can cause various behaviors, such as confusion, anxiety, aggression or ignoring directions. Sundowning also can lead to pacing or wandering. Sundowning isn't a disease. It's a group of symptoms that occurs at a specific time of the day. These symptoms may affect people with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.

There is still some stigma about naps but as long as it does not affect your work, your mind or your night sleep, never mind.  Don’t have any guilt, it is acting to the demands of body and mind.  Sleep well and happy – have naps and do not have interrupted sleeps.  Life is too beautiful to be spent worrying.

Fresh from today’s afternoon sleep – yours friendly aasami sirippu sinthanaiyaan.

Expectations ! ~ Cat is out of the gate !!!

Remember this melody and its singer !!

Life is all about expectations ! - We love to expect, and when expectation is either disappointed or gratified, we start expecting fresh things again.

Globally Gold rises on geopolitical risks and bets interest rates will fall says a report.  Gold is rising at the start of the trading week as fears the conflict in Gaza is about to escalate send investors into safe-haven assets. Israel is expecting Iran to mount a large-scale military attack on Israel, according to the Israeli Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, as reported by Axios news. Such an attack would escalate the conflict substantially and threaten global stability.

In recent years, it all about AI on whether it would transform the way people work and live or would edge out more jobs.  While companies are increasing their spends on generative artificial intelligence, there is a growing gap between expectations of company executives and what workers are reporting.     In fact, a majority of employees using gen AI tools say the tools are decreasing their productivity and enhancing their workloads as opposed to reducing it, according to a recent poll.           Meanwhile, companies are also increasing their spending on new AI tools. Forty-four percent of companies said artificial intelligence is the single-largest technology spending budget item for them in the next year and 60% described their new AI investments as “accelerating” in a recent CNBC Technology Executive Council survey.

For Organisations, finding a better way of matching executive expectations and worker outcomes is critical if companies want investments in generative AI to pay off.  “If you invest billions of dollars into these technologies for large organizations but nobody uses those tools or technologies, obviously, you’re not going to get a return on that capability,” said Joe Atkinson, PwC Global Chief AI Officer.

There were expectations on some quarters that Hindenburg would destabilize the trading market.  Contrary to expectations that the latest report of US short-seller Hindenburg Research which questioned the conduct of the Sebi chairperson while inspecting the Adani Group for manipulating stock prices would have a wider impact on the Indian equity market, the bulls of Dalal Street sidelined all the concerns. And, the local benchmark indices closed the Monday session with just minor cuts. At close, the BSE Sensex was down only 56.99 points or 0.07% at 79,648.92, and the NSE Nifty declined 20.50 points or 0.08% to settle at 24,347.00. In the broader market, the mid and smallcap index showed resistance and closed in green.

"The Indian market exhibited a mild optimism, although the initial path was eclipsed by the continuation of the Adani-Hindenburg-SEBI saga. However, the market brushed away these noises, taking positive cues from global markets,” said one head of a Research firm. He added, “Moreover, the domestic market is anticipating ease in CPI inflation, which is going to be further supported by a good monsoon. Yet, the upside risk remains still, given firm oil prices and volatility in food inflation.”

Moving away to Sporting arena,  It wasn't easy for Rafael Nadal on Friday as the Spaniard had to battle hard against Argentina's Mariano Navone in their Swedish Open quarter-final fixture. After losing the first set via tie-breaker, the 38-year-old had to use all his experience to eke out a 6(2)-7(7) 7-5 7-5 win.  Nadal missed most of 2023 and made his comeback at the Brisbane International in January. But an injury ruled him out of the Australian Open, and in his second comeback, he lost to Alexander Zverev in the first round at Roland Garros. Meanwhile, he skipped Wimbledon, so that he could prepare for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

There was a time media kept targeting MS Dhoni querying on his retirement, so also, Nadal is now being peppered with Qs on whether he would play.

After his win on Friday, Nadal was asked if he would participate in the upcoming US Open, and he confirmed that he checked in for the entry list. "I had to check in for the US Open entry list and give myself a chance to decide in the upcoming weeks," he said.  Given his recent fitness and injury struggles, it won't be a surprise for fans if Nadal announces his retirement after the medal in Paris.
