இரவின் ஆரம்பத்தில், சந்திர ஒளி லேசாகப் பரவியிருந்த மந்தமான வெளிச்சத்தில், பெரும் பந்தங்களை இடது கையில் பற்றியும், வாளை வலது கையில் உயர ஏந்தியும், பயங்கரமான, பலவிதக் கூச்சல்களைப் போட்டுக்கொண்டும் சூறாவளி போல் வந்து கொண்டிருந்த களப்பிரர் கூட்டத்தைக் கண்டதும், அதை எதிர்க்க காஞ்சியின் காலாட்படையையும் புரவிப் படையையும் சுவர் போல இணைந்து நிற்க வைத்தான் குமாரன்.  

முதலில் காலாட்படைத் தலைவனை அழைத்து, “இது நகரமக்கள் சமீபத்தில் ஏற்படுத்திய படை. அதிக போர் அனுபவமில்லாதது. எதிரி வந்ததும் இவர்கள் தங்கள் வேல்களை எதிரிப்படையின் புரவியின் மீதும், புரவி வீரர்கள் மீதும் குறிபார்த்து ஒரேசமயத்தில் எறிந்துவிட்டுப் பின்வாங்கி விடட்டும். அவர்கள் காட்டுப் பகுதியை நோக்கிப் பின்வாங்கும் சமயத்தில் புரவிப்படை யுடன் முதலில் நான் மோதுவேன். பிறகு அதற்குள் ஊடுருவி முன்னேறுவேன். அதே சமயத்தில் பின்வாங்கிய உனது காலாட்படை முன்னேறி, பக்கவாட்டில் எதிரிகள் சிதறி ஓடுவதைத் தடுக்கட்டும். மீதியை நான் பார்த்துக் கொள்கிறேன்” என்று எச்சரித்து அனுப்பினான்.   களப்பிரர் சூறாவளி போல வந்தவர்கள், பத்தடிதூரத்துக்கு வந்ததும் எதிரிலே சுவர் போல் நின்ற காஞ்சி படையுடன் மோத வேண்டியதாயிற்று. அவர்கள் வாளைச் சுழற்றுவதற்கு முன்பாகவே அவர்களை நோக்கி காலாட் படையின் வேல்கள் பறந்தன. அவற்றால் தாக்குண்ட புரவிகள் அலறின. வேல்களுக்கு வீரர்கள் சிலரும் இலக்காகிப் புரவிகளிலிருந்து சரிந்தனர்.   

 

முதலாம் குலோத்துங்க சோழன் (கி.பி. 1070–1122) மற்றும் அவருடைய தளபதியான கருணாகரத் தொண்டைமான் காலக் கட்டத்தில் நடப்பதாக அமைந்த ஒரு மிக நல்ல புதினம். சோழர்களின் கடற்படை, தென் கிழக்கு ஆசிய நாடான ஸ்ரீவிஜயம் (இன்றைய இந்தோனேசியா/மலேசியா பகுதிகள்) மற்றும் கடாரம் மீது தொடுத்த போர்களை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டது.  அக்காலத்து சோழர்களின் கப்பல் கட்டும் முறை, திசையறி கருவிகள், கடல் நீரோட்டங்கள் பற்றிய துல்லியமான வர்ணனைகள் கொண்ட நாவல் கடல்புறா . 

'கடல் புறா' என்ற அதிநவீன போர் அலகுகள் கொண்ட சோழர் காலத்துக் கப்பல்!!   சோழப் பேரரசின் கடற்படை வலிமையையும், அவர்களின் கடல் கடந்த வெற்றிகளையும் மையமாகக் கொண்டு இக்கதை எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Kadal Pura  is among the evergreen Novels in Tamil,  was initially written and serialised   in the popular Tamil magazine Kumudam before being compiled & published  as a complete set on March 1, 1967.   

Its author  -  Sandilyan (Sri Bashyam Iyengar 1910-1987)  was a celebrated pioneer of Tamil historical romance and adventure novels. Known for his vivid, gripping descriptions of ancient empires, wars, and politics—predominantly set during the Chola and Pandya eras—he was a legendary figure in Tamil literature.   His two sons were Professors.  Mr B Sadagopan taught me History & Political Science in early 1980s in DG Vaishnav College while Mr Krishnan was in Physics and rose to become Principal too.  

Chandilyan participated in   the freedom movement; worked as a  journalist and a screenwriter. He officially began writing his sweeping sagas in the 1950s. Understand that Sandilyan was connected with movies too initially.  During his time at the Hindustan Times he became friends with B N Reddy of Vijaya Studios and V. Nagayya.  He co-wrote the screenplays of films like Swarga Seema (1945) and En Veedu (1953). He later wrote about his film world experiences in his book Cinema Valarndha Kadhai (1985). Later he also produced a documentary titled "Birth of a Newspaper"; but writing novels was his forte.  His historical epics were widely published in popular Tamil weeklies and include:  Yavana Rani, Kadal Pura, Kanni maadam,  Mannan magal and more.  Though he passed away in Sept 1987, Sandilyan's literary impact remains strong, as he is still widely read by fans of historical fiction. 

Understand that Sandilyan’s father - Sri U.Ve.Srirangam Satagopa chariar was a famous Upanyasakar    

I had recently shared (repost) of  pic taken in  June  2016 – happy posing with respected Prof. B. Satagopan, Retd. Head of Dept. History & Politics, DG Vaishnav College,  son of legendary writer of historic novels late Shri Chandilyan .. taken at the time of visit of our Acharyar - Sri U Ve Koil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Singarachaar Swami at Thiruvallikkeni.  Mr Sadagopan is no more, passed away in July 2020. 

20^th June 2026 provided me another opportunity to be with Sandilyan’s other illustrious son, a man who taught a tough subject with ease making students understand the love the subject.

In Academics -  Physics is considered fundamental because it uncovers the basic laws governing matter, energy, space, and time—the foundation upon which all other sciences build. It is seen as elite because  Physics requires "certain intellectual skills that the majority of [people] do not possess"—advanced mathematical reasoning, logical abstraction, and experimental design. The subject is "tough and nobody truly grasps everything"; courses like General Relativity are considered "for crazy people" due to their mathematical complexity

 

The man in this picture is Dr B. Krishnan, 77 years young now.  As I studied Economics (History / Political Science) taught by Mr B Sadagopan, Dr B Krishnan was the pillar of Physics Dept of DG Vaishnav College, he became the HoD of Physics Department and later became the Principal too, serving the great Educational institution for five years+ as Principal. He is recognized as one of the most prominent educators of Physics.  

… .. and with him is his spouse Mrs Bhooma Krishnan,  Economics graduate from Bombay university with PG in Vaishnavism, Divyaprabandham and Sanskrit, well versed in Vaishnava sampradhayam, who worked and retired from Life Insurance Corporation of India as Regional Manager IT.   Here is a picture of the couple taken at the function held at Triplicane on the occasion of visit of our Acharyar - Sri U Ve Kovil Kanthadai Chandamarutham   (Doddayachar) Yoga Nrusimha  Swami and a photo of Dr Krishnan receiving a book from our Acaryan.

A Sea-gull

 

It was morning, and the new sun sparkled gold across the ripples of a gentle sea. A mile from shore a fishing boat chummed the  water.  and  the word for Breakfast Flock flashed through  the  air,  till  a  crowd  of  a  thousand seagulls came to dodge and fight for bits of food. It was another busy day beginning.  Seagulls, as you know, never falter, never stall.  

Words - the starting lines of the famous “Jonathan Livingstone Seagull”     about a seagull who is trying to learn about flying, personal reflection, freedom, and self-realization.  

Gulls, or colloquially seagulls, are seabirds of the family Laridae in the suborder Lari.

என் உயிர் நீதானே; உன் உயிர் நாந்தானே !!! Priya !

In recent times, whenever big banner films are set to release, they create some ruckus, create negative publicity to ensure that the reach is wider, thereby the movie runs and they mint money !!   See movies just as entertainment and shun actors otherwise ! 

Decades ago this song was a big hit (the movie was not so) – unlikely that one can decipher these words, though most would hum along !!

 

ஹத்தியக்கு சுக்காவா !  ஸ்லாலுவக்கு ஜிந்த்தாவா !!

 சயாபாண்டாங் டெரிமு !  சயா பர் ஹரி ஹரி டோக்கா !! 

Year 1978 and the female who acted in this song is now 75+ - then what could tbe age of Hero and others !!    “Priya”  directged by SP Muthu Raman with dialogues penned by Panchu Arunachalam, starring Rajnikant, Sridevi and ..    Malay actress Aznah Hamid.   Understand that she has her line of perfumes  and acted on TV serials till a couple of years ago.

 

The movie was adapted from a novel of the same name by genius  Sujatha Rangarajan. It was a serial in weekly magazine Kumudham and storyline was about a budding actress travelling to London ! – but in the movie, it was Singapore – and lawyer Ganesh (portrayed by Rajnikanth) went to Singapore but his junior Vasanth was denied visa !!!    It was dubbed and released in Telugu as Ajeyudu; in Hindi as Love in Singapore

நீ யாரோ இங்கு நான் யாரோ,  ஒன்று சேர்ந்தோமே இன்பம் காண்போமே 

Illayraja rose to fame with the background score and nice songs in this movie.  This particular song featuring Rajni and Malay actress was sung by KJ Yesudoss and Jensi. 

 

Literally – when two bodies claim their soul to be one, it is indeed happiness !! – here is a picture of two calves with one head !

Green fields ~ Dusi Mamandur village

How often do you visit villages ? – or when did you visit a village last ! – and how long was your stay there, few minutes, hours, days  ?? 

கிராமங்கள் புகைப்படத்தில், சினிமாவிலும் பார்க்க மிக மிக ரம்மியமாக அழகாக இருக்கும்.  நேரில் நிஜத்தில் சில நாட்கள் அங்கே வாழ்வது வித்தியாசமாக இருக்கலாம். 

எங்கள் பள்ளி நாட்களில் MGR படங்கள் நின்று விட்டன.  வயதான சிவாஜி நடித்துக்கொண்டு இருந்தார்.  கமலும் ரஜினியும் போட்டி போட்டுக்கொண்டு இருந்தனர்.  பாரதிராஜா கிராம கதைகள் என சில காதல் கதைகள் சொன்னார். கூடவே மகேந்திரன், பாலு மஹேந்திரா என சிலர் கிராமங்களை அழகாக காட்டினார்.   கிராமத்து மனோபாவம் கொண்டரசிகர்கள் ஏக்கத்தில் தவித்த சமயத்தில்  டவுசருடன் ராமராஜன் அசலான கிராமத்தவனாக வந்து  மக்கள் நாயகன் அந்தஸ்தைபெற்றார். கங்கை அமரன் இயக்கத்தில், இசைஞானி இளையராஜா பாடல்கள் பட்டி தொட்டியெல்லாம் ஒலித்தன.  நம்ம ஊரு  நல்ல ஊரு எங்க ஊரு பாட்டுக்காரன், , செண்பகமே செண்பகமே, கரகாட்டக்காரன்,  போன்ற படங்களின் தொடர் வெற்றி அவரை திரையுலகில்  உச்சத்திற்கு கொண்டு சென்றது.  

சுஜாதாவின் பற்பல அற்புத கதைகளில், சற்று அதிகம் அறியப்படாதது !!  "சின்னக்குயிலி",  தன் அப்பாவின் உயில் படி அவர் பிறந்து வளர்ந்த கிராமமான சின்னகுயிலிக்கு சில நல்ல காரியங்களை செய்ய வருகிறார் சிங்கப்பூரில் செட்டிலான மாணிக்கம். கிராமக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு இலவசக் கல்வி, கிராமத்தினருக்கு இலவச மருத்துவமனை என்ற திட்டத்தோடு வரும் அவருக்கு சில குறுக்கீடுகள், அதை தாண்டி அவர் கட்டிய பள்ளியினால் ஏற்படும் நெருக்கடிகள், இதற்க்கு நடுவில் அந்த கிராமத்திலிருக்கும் சிறுவயது பெண்ணான, படிக்கும் ஆர்வமுடைய தேவநாயகியை கட்டாயப்படுத்தி அவளது தந்தை திருமணம் செய்து கொடுத்ததை எதிர்த்து அவளை காப்பாற்றப் போராடுவது என்று .. ..  ஒரு நல்ல சமுதாயத்திற்கு முன்னேற்றத் தேவையான கல்வி, மருத்துவம், வேலைவாய்ப்பு என பல விஷயங்கள்  பின்னாளில் சங்கரின் பிரம்மாண்டமான ரஜினிகாந்த் படம்  'சிவாஜியில்' பார்த்து இருப்பீர்கள்.  . கிராம தத்தெடுப்பு என்பதை 'பிரின்ஸ்' மகேஷ் பாபு போன்றவர்கள் செய்வதை பார்த்து இருப்பீர்கள்.  இவற்றிற்கு பல வருஷங்கள் முன்பே வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பே 'இந்த சின்னக்குயிலி' நாவலின் மூலமாக சொல்லியிருக்கிறார் சுஜாதா.

Sea gull story !!

 

Good Morning – welcome to my Photo story – today that of Sea-gulls  !!!

 

By 1979, the Packer crisis was over and World Series Cricket had been disbanded. All the leading players returned to play for their respective countries and Australia, re-inforced by the likes of McCosker, Greg Chappell, Hookes, Marsh, Lillee, Wood, Walters and Pascoe were by 1980 the second best team in the world, close behind the West Indies.  So Australia on the eve of the 1980-81 tour by India were a pretty formidable lot and a tough tour for India.  

India had lost all three previous rubbers in Australia and by the manner in which the side had gone down by an innings inside three days it did seem that Australia were heading for a fourth successive triumph against India at home.   In that famous third test at Mebourne – Feb 1981 – one might tend to recall that nasty incident of Sunil Gavaskar walking out and almost conceding the Test  

India scored 237 and Australia replied with 419. India's innings was highlighted by a fighting 114 by Viswanath when no one else made more than 25. For Australia, Border got 124, Walters 79 and Chappell 76. Styligh Greg Chappell and Border put on 108 runs for the fourth wicket and Border and Walters 131 runs for the fifth wicket. India were in arrears by 182 runs but by scoring 108 without loss by stumps on the third day, Gavaskar and Chauhan had given the team some hope but a deficit of 182 on Australian wicket against quality bowlers was extremely tough.  

There was to be further trouble – Shivlal Yadav was injured, unable to bat and more badly will not bowl.    Dennis  Lillee, in his 48th Test, overtook Richie Benaud's Australian record of 248 wickets.  India ended up at 324 leaving  Australia to get only 143 runs for victory.  Indians  were badly handicapped in the bowling department. Yadav would not bowl while Doshi had a fractured toe and Kapil Dev a pulled thigh muscle. The only fit bowler, Ghavri (who had opened the bowling with Patil) however gave the Indians a big bonus by dismissing Dyson and Chappell with successive balls. Doshi then removed Wood and at close of play, Australia were 24 for three. Now the match very much hung in the balance and Kapil Dev, alive to the situation, took the field on the final morning, having taken pain killing injections.  Kapil Dev bowled beautifully and India won the test   with  one fit bowler and two half fit bowlers.   

Kapil Dev has one remorse moment at Australia.  On the Republic Day of 1986, he pulled a Kookaburra very hard. Maybe Bruce Reid or Simon Davies was the bowler at Adelaide, and chasing 260 odd, Indians were struggling  six down, requiring probably sixty more in fifty balls.  A lot of seagulls were sunnying themselves in the park. One of the unsuspecting birds  was slammed on its head by hard leather, a fierce pull by Kapil – it staggered as the camera zoomed, not sure what happened, perhaps it did not have a chance.  

Sea gulls are typically medium to large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings.  Those of you in the habit of reading English stories would remember the following lines …..

To stall in the air is for them disgrace and it is dishonour. .............  Most gulls don't bother to learn more  than  the  simplest  facts  of  flight - how to get from shore to food and back again. For most gulls,  it  is not flying that matters, but eating.  

Words - the starting lines of the famous “Jonathan Livingstone Seagull”   an allegorical fable in novella form written by American author Richard Bach and illustrated with black-and-white photographs shot by Russell Munson. It is about a seagull who is trying to learn about flying, personal reflection, freedom, and self-realization. This book is one of the best sellers.

Aeroplane landing - thoughts of 1980s

வருஷங்கள் ஓடுகின்றன ! காலங்கள் மாறுகின்றன !  1975ல் ஆண்டி ராபர்ட்ஸின் வேக பந்து வீச்சை அற்புதமாக தடுத்து ஆடிய குண்டப்பா விஸ்வநாத்தின் ரசிகர்களுக்கு இன்றைய IPL T20 madness  பிடிக்காமல் போகலாம்.  நான் விதிவிலக்கு எனக்கு இரண்டுமே, ஏன் யார் கிரிக்கெட் ஆடினாலுமே பார்த்து ரசிக்க பிடிக்கின்றது.  

1980களின் திருவல்லிக்கேணி (கிட்டத்தட்ட தமிழகத்தின் ஏனைய பகுதிகளும்) இருந்த நிலைமையை இன்றைய இளைஞர்களால் புரிந்து கொள்வது கடினம்.  படிப்பு, சினிமா, விளையாட்டு, வேலை பற்றி, எதிர்கால கவலை நடுவே, தெருக்களில் தாவணி பெண்களை நோக்கி புன்னகைத்து, பலர் மனக்கோட்டை கட்டி சந்தோழித்து இருந்த காலம்.  அன்றைய நாட்களின் சின்ன சின்ன நிகழ்வுகள் கூட அதிசயத்யதையும் ஆனந்தத்தையும் அளித்தன. 

ஒருவனின் இளம் வயது என்பது லட்சியங்களும் கனவுகளும் நிரம்பி பெருகி வளரும் காலக்கட்டம். அந்தக் கனவுகளை நோக்கி பயணப்பட்டு விட முடியும் என்கிற நம்பிக்கை நிறைந்திருக்கிற வயது. கூடவே சந்தேகமும் நிராசையும் இணைந்திருக்கும் பருவம். விஸ்வம் ஒரு பட்டதாரி இளைஞன். கொஞ்சம் அறிவு ஜீவி. தனக்கு பிடித்த மாதிரி இலக்கியம் வாசித்து கொண்டும், எழுதி கொண்டும், வருமானம் இன்றி காலம் கழிக்கிறான்.  

இந்த விஸ்வம் ஞாபகம் உள்ளதா ! - சுஜாதாவின் கணேஷ் போல இவர் உங்கள் ஆதர்ச நாயகனா !  தரையில் இறங்கும் விமானங்கள், இந்துமதியால் 1982-ல் ஆனந்த விகடன் இதழில் தொடராக எழுதப்பட்டு பின்னர் நூலாக வெளிவந்தது.  இந்த நாவல்   ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழி பெயர்க்கப்பட்டு எஸ்.ஐ.இ.டி. கல்லூரியில் துணைப்பாடத் திட்டமாக வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது என குட்டி செய்தி !!

 

இங்கே தரையில் அல்ல மரத்தில் இறங்கும் விமானம்.

Sujatha’s   ‘Nylon Kayiru’ was published in Kumudam for 14 weeks in 1968   !! 

An aeroplane continues to be a marvel – many of us still look to sky on hearing the sound ~nearer Airports, you could find people standing to watch the flight descending or take off.  The aluminium flying bird is of complex design – the primary factors in  aircraft structures are strength, weight, and reliability.  

Most of us would love to have that window seat (now-a-days they are priced at additional cost !) and sometimes would have the disappointment of seeing the wings only during the flight !!  

Aircraft have wings attached to the fuselage in one of two main ways – either above the fuselage (high wing) or below the mid-point of the fuselage (low wing). Large commercial jet aircraft tend to have low wings while  smaller aircrafts, propeller aircraft, military, and many cargo aircraft, often have high wings.   High wings tend to be flatter, whereas low wings will have an upwards angle to them.  

The one in pic is probably an ATR aircraft.  ATR  is a Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer headquartered in Blagnac, France, a suburb of Toulouse,  formed during 1981 as a joint venture between Aérospatiale of France (now Airbus) and Aeritalia (now Leonardo) of Italy. 

The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop, short-haul regional airliner developed and produced in France and Italy by aircraft manufacturer ATR – the  number "72" in its name is derived from the aircraft's typical standard seating capacity of 72 passengers.

In solving the mystery in ‘Nylon Kayiru’ occurring in the backdrop of Bombay – the savvy Ganesh would reconstruct the incident in mind – and the clue eventually would be ‘the accused booking tickets and walking out of Indian Airlines  Office in Bombay  – and the distance / travelling time between that place and the place of crime .. ..those were the days when travel by air was costly, elitist and only privileged would have travelled by air.  Gone are those days.

Angels, demons, false Gods and more !!

In many of the Western  religions, angels are spiritual beings who act as intermediaries between God and humans. Messengers of God, angels may do some little good. Their role may be to teach, command, or inform individuals of their destiny. Angels may also act to protect or help people. The word angel comes from the Greek word angelos, meaning "messenger." In Western religions, the word specifically describes a kind, or benevolent, being. 

If there are Angel, there are also demons, and some false-gods too.  In some mythology, false Gods too   were worshiped by the people of Canaan and the nations surrounding the Promised Land, but were these idols just made-up deities or did they actually possess supernatural power?  Also called Astarte, or Ashtoreth (plural), the goddess of the Canaanites was connected with fertility and maternity. Worship of Ashtoreth was strong at Sidon.

flying Butterfly ! ~ A sound of thunder !!

In the year 2055, time travel  becomes a practical reality.  Time Safari Inc. offers wealthy adventurers the chance to travel back in time to hunt extinct species such as dinosaurs. A hunter named Eckels pays $10,000 to join a hunting party that will travel back 66 million years to the Late Cretaceous period, on a guided safari to kill a Tyrannosaurus rex.

Butterflies (Rhopalocera) are insects that have large, often brightly coloured wings, and a conspicuous, fluttering flight. The group comprises the superfamilies Hedyloidea (moth-butterflies in the Americas) and Papilionoidea. Butterfly fossils date to the Paleocene, about 56 million years ago. 

Butterflies have a four-stage life cycle, they undergo complete metamorphosis. Winged adults lay eggs on the food plant on which their larvae, known as caterpillars, will feed. The caterpillars grow, sometimes very rapidly, and when fully developed, pupate in a chrysalis. When metamorphosis is complete, the pupal skin splits, the adult insect climbs out, and after its wings have expanded and dried, it flies off. 

Chaos theory says that a tiny, insignificant event or circumstance can have outsized influence in shaping the way a large, complex system evolves into the future. Many people are familiar with this so-called butterfly effect, an idea often traced to science fiction author Ray Bradbury’s  story “A Sound of Thunder.” In that tale, a man who has time-traveled into the deep past to hunt a Tyrannosaurus rex inadvertently crushes a butterfly under his foot. When he returns to the present, he discovers that this seemingly trivial act altered the course of history—and not in a good way.

In the early 1970s, meteorologist and mathematician Edward Norton Lorenz articulated the butterfly effect in science and launched the field of chaos theory. In plain language, this version of the effect says that initial conditions strongly influence the evolution of highly complex systems.

The plot at the start is that of ‘A Sound of Thunder’ an American sci-f9 released in 2005, directed by Peter Hyams and starring Edward Burns, Catherine McCormack and Ben Kingsley.  The film is based on the 1952 short story of the same name by Ray Bradbury.  The short story was  first published in Collier's magazine in the June 28, 1952, issue.

Well, it was not easy filming a flying ! butterfly – one nestled on a flower or green leaf is always easy to shoot.

memory in Computers from 1.44 disk to 1TB memory cards and more !

In early 1990s, Oriental Insurance was effecting Front Office Computerisation – and Computers were the one many dreaded .. .. earlier they were confined to airconditioned rooms (a luxury in Offices those days); entry was strictly restricted and people had to remove their footwear before entry.   ? Life those days was not all that easy.  In MS DoS mode, Opening directories, creating files, renaming them, saving info – all were considered work of skilled persons and novices would look with wonder. What is done in Excel sheets were earlier performed with great difficulty in Lotus 123.   A couple of elite of us had access to the locker containing Recovery Disks (Boot disks containing programs) which were needed for bringing lives to Computers when something crashed !!

The Genius Sujatha introduced Computer in 1970s  with his writings starting in ‘Sorga theevu’ where the hero Thirukadambi Sundaravaradan Srinivasa Aiyangar  was a Computer Professional.  In 1984 – he wrote a serial ‘Silicon sillu puratchi’ – in Dinamani Kathir – most of which was not comprehensible to me at that time !!

Technology improvement dazzles ….. what sells most now-a-days is ‘memory cards’  - hundreds of manufacturers market thousands of memory cards and devices built to SD standards in a variety of storage capacities, speed classes and three different physical sizes: SD, miniSD, and microSD. SD memory cards are typically used in personal computers, video cameras, digital cameras and other large consumer electronics devices. The microSD and miniSD cards are commonly used in smaller electronic devices like mobile phones and tablet computers.

In the 1980s, when the World wondered how useful and how great storage of information a PC is – the IBM of those days started with 256 KB  achievable through the installation of 64 kB on the motherboard and three 64 kB expansion cards.  IBM sold the first IBM PCs in configurations with 16 or 64 kB of RAM preinstalled.  A couple of versions later came the floppy disk ….the initial ones were unwieldy – then came the modern  3.5” floppy disk introduced by Sony in 1981,  considered such a novelty mainly because it could be carried out in pocket. It could contain vast data of 1.44 mb – hailed as marvel.

In life few of the things grow faster than others and there are few which gets antiquate much faster. When Computers were first used, they were so big in size – then the data media was unwieldy.  The novel 3.5” floppy disk introduced by Sony in 1981   could contain vast data of 1.44 mb – hailed as marvel ! Strange.  In mid 2000s – I was running a 4 page newsletter for SYMA titled ‘Bliss’ – it mostly did not contain any photos but was filled with my writings partly because I was conscious of the fact that once complete, the size should be contained in a floppy disk.  The disks were costlier and often would go waste, if not handled properly. 

The modern generation might laugh at the FD and its size as Computers do not have a port for floppy disks.   With blue ray DVDs, pen drives and external hard disks – you can store the whole data of an office and obviously floppy disks have lost then relevance. Still, Sony had demand of 12 million 3.5” floppy disks in Japan till recently  – presumably to die-hard old schoolers.

For those who are not techno-savvy, floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ("floppy") magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive. . Invented by IBM, floppy disks in 8-inch (203 mm), 51⁄4 in (133 mm), and 31⁄2 in (89 mm) formats enjoyed nearly three decades as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange, from the mid-1970s to late 90s.

Information was recorded in floppy disks and for transporting them, we had the floppy disk mailer. In fact there was something known as boot disks, which helped Computers with DOS start their operation. These disks could get corrupt easily and the whole information contained therein could be lost. Still it was a owner’s pride and people carried them in shirt pockets to be seen by everybody else to be recognised as someone who is a master technician (somebody could handle computers).  The diskette had a cover or sleeve or envelope, in which there was a circular disk of plastic covered with a magnetic coating inside. The inner disk was referred as a "doughnut"; the disk material called "the media". Probably our EEI policy still refers to that as “External data media”, though this could similarly apply to all other forms of storage of data.

Technically, data got written on the disk by the write head which wrote data track, which was followed by a "tunnel erase" pair of heads to erase data on either side of the data track. Disks functioned by spin at some rotational speed of a read/write head. The head was placed some distance from the center of rotation so the actual radial speed of the media, and therefore the density of flux changes or bits per radial inch of the media, varied. Corruption of data occurred when the tracks were too close together.

A memory card or memory cartridge is an electronic data storage device used for storing digital information, typically using flash memory.  The basis for memory card technology is flash memory.   It was invented by Fujio Masuoka at Toshiba in 1980,  and commercialized by Toshiba in 1987.   Flash memory is an electronic (solid-state) non-volatile computer memory storage medium that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. The two main types of flash memory are named after the NAND and NOR logic gates.  Secure Digital, officially abbreviated as SD, is a proprietary non-volatile memory card format developed by the SD Card Association (SDA) for use in portable devices.

The standard was introduced in Aug 1999 by joint efforts between SanDisk, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric) and Toshiba as an improvement over Multi Media Cards (MMC), and has become the industry standard. The three companies formed SD-3C, LLC, a company that licenses and enforces intellectual property rights associated with SD memory cards and SD host and ancillary products.

My first camera came with a 16MB SD card – now phones have 64 GB mini cards ! – Digital and DSLR cameras generally have 32 or 64 GB cards .. .. this post is about the biggest capacity micro SD card ever sold -  SanDisk’s 1TB  card! Available from 2019. Amazon India  has a product listing, though it’s currently unavailable in the US.  Amazon offers it in India for Rs.32619/-  Owning the first-ever 1TB microSD card seems cool. But if that distinction isn’t as important to you as saving money is, there are a few smaller options that are at their best prices yet.  Even 2 TB cards seemingly have been made but presumably are not available online.

For those (like me) who do not Computers much – a bit is a binary digit, the smallest increment of data on a computer. A bit can hold only one of two values: 0 or 1, corresponding to the electrical values of off or on, respectively. Because bits are so small, you rarely work with information one bit at a time. Bits are usually assembled into a group of eight to form a byte. A byte contains enough information to store a single ASCII character, like "h".

A kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes, not one thousand bytes as might be expected, because computers use binary (base two) math, instead of a decimal (base ten) system. Computer storage and memory is often measured in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). A medium-sized novel contains about 1 MB of information. 1 MB is 1,024 kilobytes, or 1,048,576 (1024x1024) bytes, not one million bytes. Similarly, one 1 GB is 1,024 MB, or 1,073,741,824 (1024x1024x1024) bytes. A terabyte (TB) is 1,024 GB; 1 TB is about the same amount of information as all of the books in a large library, or roughly 1,610 CDs worth of data.   There is more too a  petabyte,  exabyte (EB),  zettabyte (ZB) and a yottabyte (YB).

Mind boggling to say the least !
