I am posting this in haste, for this does not reveal the true picture – not even perhaps 10% of what regularly happens in our own Chennai – at Chintadripet to be precise.
A truly inspirational story of a Parrot man in his early 50s !! - daily morning I feed on my terrace about 1 kg of rice, wheat and corn – a few Parakeets do come but often fly away when Crows or Parrots eke them out ! – a few hundreds of Parrots seen this evening was a pure delight – actually – a few thousands land daily in the terrace of this kind-hearted Sudarson, famously “Parrot Sudarson” or the “Birdman of Chennai,” along with his wife Vidhya, and his kind spouse Mrs Vidhya, who lets visitors inside their house to sit and watch from their terrace, offering them water and tea too.
The winding Iyya Mudali Street, is known for flowers and more for Temple Kudais (Umbrellas) - a long bamboo handle, multi-coloured tassels, and golden designs of bulls and lingams — classic markers of the temple umbrellas from Chintadripet’s artisans. These are made for various Temples across the State and also abroad. Chintadripet was a place of weavers and artisans.
At the end of the road, closer to river Coovum, the nameplate on the door reads ‘M.Sah residence’. Sudarson Sah, the Birdman of Chennai, has been feeding soaked rice and raw peanuts to thousands of parrots on this house’s terrace for 15 years. Rose-ringed parakeets — with their red beak, blue tail, loud sound descend on large numbers. Sudarson has dedicated his life to bird-feeding and his wife has supported him in this journey.
Today I had been
there around 5.15 pm, by which time – the birds had started going away. Sure, would make another visit and a better
video capturing the reality of flocking Parrots and the hospitality of Mr
Sudarson.
