What is Orthoepy - the complex English grammar !!!!

Dear (s)

Have you heard of orthoepy ? Does the Spelling of the Word and its pronunciation have any connection ?

Came across this word ‘orthoepy’ - Generally, we tend to understand the meaning of unknown words by breaking them in or by relating to commonly derived words or by relating them to closely spelt words.

Orthopedic is more commonly known and hence gives an impression that this also should be a word similar or related to Orthopedic which is a study of musculoskeletal system. Ortho Doctors specialize in diagnosis and treatment of problems of musculoskeletal system which would encompass – bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves; which again are parts of Hand & wrist, shoulder & elbow, hip & knee, foot & ankle, Back & neck. Apart from broken bones, there could be sprains & strains, sports injuries, arthritis and more….

Broken bones, also called fractures, are among the most common orthopedic injuries. Bone fracture is a medical condition in which thre is a breakage of bone. It could be the result of high foce impact or stress or trivial injury as necessitated by weakened bones such as osteoporosis, bone cancer, orteogenesis imperfecta, termed as pathological fracture. Although broken bone is commonly used to describe bone fracture, break is not a formal orthopaedic term. Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics is the branch of surgery concerned with musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedics is a terminology derived from greek words ‘orthos’ meaning correct, straight and paideion meaning child. There are many derivatives from the Greek word Ortho. In Computer Science Orthographic projection is a means of representing 3 dimensional object in two dimension – a form of parallel projection. In medicine, Orthomyxovirus is a family of viruses to which influenza (causative agent of flu) belongs; Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry.

Then of ourse is the commonly known ‘orthodoxy’ – of pertaining to, or conforming to the approved customary and conventional forms of any doctrine, philosophy, ideology etc., This word orthodox is from the common derivative of Orthos (Right, true, straight) + doxa (opinion or praise)relating to thinking.
Now coming to our subject matter ‘orthoepy’ (pronounced Awr-THoh-up-pee) – it is a study of correct pronunciation. It is the study of the relationship between the pronunciation of words and their orthography !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Orthography of a language specifies the standard way of using a specific writing system. Colloquially it is synonymous with spelling. It actually is the alphabetic spelling system used – a set of rules that generall govern how speech sounds are represented in writing.

The grammar of English is complicated and many sounds can legitimately be spelt in more than one way (quite often we get the wrong one) and that perhaps explains why we were never good in the Language exams !! Do look forward to your feedback
